China races past U.S. as GM's top market

Automotive News -- November 15, 2010 - 12:01 am ET

This year, for the first time, General Motors could sell more vehicles in
China than in the United States.

In the first 10 months of 2010, GM says its Chinese joint ventures sold
1,977,000 units, up nearly 36 percent. Over the same period, GM sold
1,819,000 vehicles in the United States, up 6 percent.

Since industry sales in China are expected to exceed 17 million units this
year -- well above the U.S. market's likely 11.5 million units -- China is
virtually certain to become GM's biggest market this year.

October sales were strong in China. GM's joint ventures sold 199,600 units,
up nearly 20 percent from October 2009.
