RE: [StockSSDragRacing] OT - "Loose Caboose" Video

Well just about everything that would help me in doing a close match to the Labbous Omni. I could use a good shot of the rear end set up and the rest of the underside. Underside shots are always worth a ton to us model builders.
On another note. something I always notice about Johnny's Omni was that the front wheels seemed out farther then most tube chassis cars. Must have been the mustang II front end. I am thinking that I am going to do this version of that car. I like the yellow and orange stripes on the dark green. YEESH... LOL! oh those crazy 80's I do not think I could pull off the version with all of the gold pin stripes.

I never saw Labbous race, but I have been reading about him for years and just always admired him how he made a living at what he did and how successful he was in the sportsman divisions of drag racing in the early days of that not being so possible. That is also way I am such a fan of Dan Fletcher, too. Those two guys are my Tony Schumacher and John Force.

Since it was built, the car has only sat idle for a few years when the 2nd owner was sick (I'm the third (and final) owner). I bought it as a rolling chassis with 8.50 tags in Oct. 2007, put an engine/trans in and went racing. I'm currently building a 528" BB Chrysler for it and will have it decorated like an old P/S car next year with a square snorkel, etc.) I attached a pic Bob W. took at Quaker City earlier this year.

Matt, what are you looking for chassis wise? Probably be easier for me to mail you a disc. I looked through my stuff and found an article mentioning a stock 74-up Pinto front suspension, but I would imagine Herb modified it in some way. I've spent countless hours trying to figure these cars out, each and every one was different from the next.

Yea, are you restoring it back to original, or just making it your own for racing? do you have more chassis pics?

Steve, you've got a real interesting piece of racing history there. Thanks for the pics.

Mine is #3 of 4, originally built for Max Naylor. Herb said it was the "sister" car to Johnny's.

I've been after good detailed photos of the suspension on these cars for a couple of years now. When I bought mine, it had already been converted to the strut front end and had the rear shock arrangement modified. I still believe that 1 of the 2 "missing" cars may still have the A-arm setup. It's just a matter of finding them to see.

I attached a couple pics of the original McCandless roll bar before it was redone in my car.

If I could get good, detailed photos of the chassis and suspension. I can duplicate it in scale. I have very good fabricating skills plus I have built and worked on real race cars for so many years AND I was a chassis and suspension specialist. It all helps me quite a bit in my model building. Decals are a bitch for me because I just cannot afford the best technology to do them. I can. Just ask Wayne. But I cannot do them as nice as I would like.

The hardest part would be duplicating the original McCandless interior and A-arm front suspension. There's plenty of photos to make the decals. This was car #2 from Herb's shop.

Thanks Wayne. Johnny is one of my heroes in drag racing. I have been wanting to build a model of that car for years. The hard part is making the decals. Thanks for the video.

Here's a video clip from the early eighties of Georgia's Johnny Labbous making a time run in his Super Gas Omni 024 at my home track, Brainerd Optimist Drag Strip. This was before trans. brakes were used and the tree still had 5 ambers. Herb McCandless built this car for Johnny and Johnny built his own engines. Labbous won several Div.2 championships in Super Gas. He was runner-up at the Gators in 1983 and won the Summer Nationals in 1985.
