New Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster in the Flesh and Undisguised

Posted: 10 May 2011 04:38 PM PDT

Last week, Mercedes-Benz previewed its upcoming SLS AMG Roadster ahead of its world premiere at this fall's 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show with some teaser shots illustrating a subtly masked prototype during testing.

For those of you that would like a better view of the soft-top version of Mercedes' supercar, our spy photographers caught the SLS AMG Roadster out on the streets of Germany with almost no camouflage at all as the only parts of the car that were masked off were the lights and the logo on the hood. This particular example of the SLS AMG sported a black finish with a contrasting tan soft top.

Belmondo’s Chase Scene from Le Professionnel (1981)

Posted: 10 May 2011 03:56 PM PDT

Georges Lautner's 1981 action-thriller Le Professionnel is about a French Secret Service agent betrayed by his employers and left to rot in an African prison camp. After breaking out and returning to his native France, the agent (played by Jean-Paul Belmondo) begins plotting his revenge against the people who set him up. In this scene, Belmondo is attempting to outfox the French Secret Service agents following him.

Belmodono's car is the red Fiat 131 Supermirafiori while his rivals are driving a black Peugeot 504. There are a couple of 180 degree turns, a handful of nice pit manoeuvres and the prerequisite shot of the Eiffel Tower for the non-Gallic viewers. The chase eventually moves to the grounds of the Palais de Chaillot, where we discover just how overused that, "driving a car down some stairs," thing was before Jason Bourne got around to it.

It seems the success of the Ferrari FF, the production of which for this year has already been sold out, will affect the 599 GTB Fiorano as well. But in a good way, since it is being reported that Ferrari has cancelled the original plans for a 599 facelift and instead build an all-new car as a replacement. The plan was revealed by Motor Trend magazine, which noted that the new car will be derived from the FF featuring a mightier punch in the performance division. Ferrari plans to launch the new car in late 2012. Read more »

Study finds the Most Vandalised Car in Britain is the Lexus IS

Posted: 10 May 2011 12:55 PM PDT

Bad news for Lexus IS owners across the pond: if you happen to own one of the Japanese brand's entry-level sedans, you're in possession of the most vandalised car in the UK. Runners up are BMW's Z4 sports coupe and MINI's entry-level One model. It's all been revealed as part of SwiftCover.com's Vehicle Vandalism Index (VVI), whereby the UK-based insurer analysed some 2,000 motor insurance claims. SwiftCover claims director Robin Reames explains:

"Our analysis shows that luxury cars are more likely to be targeted by vandals, however, it's interesting to see the MINI One in the top three. The majority of vehicles in the top ten are what we call 'executive cars', likely to be driven by high earners who see their car as a status symbol, with just one 4x4 making up the top ten."

Fail: BMW Driver Mistakes Loading Truck for Launching Ramp…

Posted: 10 May 2011 02:51 PM PDT

Here is yet another failed attempt to load a vehicle on a truck. In fact, this one is much worse –albeit far less costly- than the Porsche Carrera GT incident we showed you back in April. This time, the protagonist is a BMW - from what we can tell in this grainy video, an E36 3-Series Coupe.

As you can see for yourself in the surveillance footage in the video after the break, the driver of the bimmer, slammed the pedal to the metal as he was going up the ramp, and the result, well, let's just say is painful yet humorous at the same time.

Mercedes-Benz Presents SLS AMG Emergency Medical Vehicle Study

Posted: 10 May 2011 07:59 AM PDT

We are not quite sure what you would do with a two-door, low riding, Gullwing-door emergency medical vehicle with a boot capacity of just 176 liters, other than to reach an accident scene in a flash, but even if that's the case, we assume a motorcycle would be a better choice. Then again, the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Emergency Medical Vehicle is just a pure study and it will make its world premiere at this week's 2011 RETTmobil in Germany. The show is the largest European trade fair for rescue and mobility and it runs from May 11 to 13. Read more »

Mazda6 and Subaru Tribeca to be Axed, According to Report from Japan

Posted: 10 May 2011 06:42 AM PDT

Mazda and Subaru may soon be forced to axe two of their models in the US market, the Mazda6 mid-size vehicle and the Subaru Tribeca SUV, due to low volumes that undermine the efficiency of the U.S. plants that they are built in, according to a newspaper report from Japan's business daily Nikkan Kogyo. It should be noted though that spokesmen for both companies declined to comment on the report.

Nikkan Kogyo wrote that Mazda is planning to discontinue production of the Mazda6 at the Flat Rock, Michigan plant, which it operates as a joint venture together with Ford Motor Co., as sales missed expectations. When Mazda introduce the latest generation of the mid-size model in 2008, the company expected an annual production of around 100,000 units, but last year, the plant churned out just 45,168 Mazda6s. In April, Mazda6 posted an increase of 7.8 percent but sales reached just 2,734 vehicles.
