SCOOP: New BMW 3-Series Gran Turismo Shows its Chic Tail

Posted: 11 May 2011 05:52 PM PDT

Over the past year, we brought you plenty of spy shots and videos of the next generation of the 3-Series sedan, codenamed F30, but now our spy photographers caught the newest addition to the family of BMW's bread and butter model, the Gran Turismo.

When it goes on sale towards the end of 2012 or early 2013, the new 3 GT will join the existing body styles of the 3-Series, which include the four-door sedan, the two-door coupe, the five-door station wagon and the hardtop convertible, offering BMW a direct rival to the Audi A5 Sportback.

Britain’s Wonderland Syndrome: Motorists Deliberately Causing Accidents and Claiming Big Payouts

Posted: 11 May 2011 03:19 PM PDT

Godfather of Soul James Brown once sang, "Stock market going up, jobs going down," and he's never been more right. Only it's not the stock market going up, its car insurance in the UK. And it's going up a lot. Twelve months ago, drivers were paying (on average) £633.55 to insure their cars. Now they're £892.08 or forty percent more, and there was a similar 40% increase the year before and the year before that. Yet with accidents declining and the competition increasing more than ever before, premiums – you'd think – would be lower than ever.

So what gives? Well, insurance companies are making bigger payouts thanks to litigation. Litigation! Roughly 200 claims a year to be exact, executed by those nefarious, "no win, no fee" lawyer-types. And this is in the UK; a country that I'd have thought would have more sense than that. Fortunately, it seems some people in the UK do have more sense than that as British Parliament has finally woken up to this litigation bully.

VIDEO: New Saab 9-5 Police Interceptor in the Making

Posted: 11 May 2011 03:09 PM PDT

When they are not trying to save Saab or put down anyone who dares express a different opinion or even report the news about the Swedish automaker and its people (I'm referring to this article where the author forgot to mention Muller's quote on the safety of Chinese cars, and which we wrote about here), the guys over Saabsunited get to spend some time at their favorite brand's Trollhattan factory.

In this video, the Saab-loving crew were given the chance to get a first view of the new 9-5 saloon police interceptor as it was being prepared, and which is said to receive its initial public outing this weekend. Follow the jump to watch the clip.

New Ferrari FF Photographed in the Dolomites

Posted: 11 May 2011 01:46 PM PDT

It's been a couple of months since Ferrari lifted the veils off the new FF, but as is the case with any new model from Maranello these days, the hype surrounding the all-wheel driver sports car has yet to die down.

For those of you that still haven't had enough of Ferrari's four-seater model, we now bring you some fresh photos –as always, in high resolution- of the FF shot during the media presentation, which took place at the snow track in Kronplatz, and the winding roads of Gardena, Sella, Pordoi and Campolongo in the Italian Dolomites. Check them all out in the gallery after the break.

Defunct Brand Owners Shun GM and Ford

Posted: 11 May 2011 12:56 PM PDT

There are some three million former Saturn, Pontiac and Hummer customers in the United States, all of whom will unlikely ever have the pleasure of buying a newer model of their current make again. These are some of America's defunct brands, all gone the same way as Plymouth, DeSoto, Packard and many others. These latest additions were culled following General Motors bankruptcy reorganisation in 2009. And Mercury owners are in the same boat.

Now, Ford and GM are desperately trying to hold onto these "brand-less" customers. Accoriding to a report from the Wall Street Journal, in this year alone, 70% Pontiac owners, 71% of Saturn owners and 65% of Mercury owners who traded in their vehicles left with something other than a Ford or GM product.

BMW Showcases Fleet of Emergency Vehicles at RETTmobil 2011

Posted: 11 May 2011 12:28 PM PDT

Following in the footsteps of Mercedes that dressed up the SLS AMG as an emergency medical vehicle, BMW unveiled its very own proposals at the RETTmobil, the leading European trade for emergency services and mobility, held in Fulda, Germany (May 11-13).

BMW has a more down-to-earth approach to the show as its emergency models are based on mainstream vehicles that are more suitable for this line of work than the fast, but unpractical, SLS AMG. We're talking about the BMW 3-Series/5-Series Touring models and the X3/X6 SUVs, although the latter is not new, having premiered at the same show in 2008.

Chrysler’s Latest Imported from Detroit Ad Featuring Designer John Varvatos

Posted: 11 May 2011 11:10 AM PDT

The next chapter of the Chrysler Group's much talked about 'Imported from Detroit' campaign brings us yet another native of America's Motor City who made it big, renowned fashion designer and entrepreneur, John Varvatos. The TV spot is named 'Attitude' and centers on the new 2011 Chrysler 300 sedan (notice the new Mopar grille?) playing on Varvatos' sense of style, and according to the ad, his "Detroit blue-collar attitude" when it comes to work.

The latest commercial in Chrysler's 'Imported from Detroit' series follows the ads with rapper Eminem for the 200 sedan and more recently, the Homecoming spot starring Detroit Lions rookie, Ndamukong Suh, again for the 300 sedan. The US automaker also plans to air a commercial featuring artist, producer, label head and entrepreneur, Dr. Dre in the all-new 2012 Chrysler 300S. Watch a Lamborghini Aventador Being Assembled Piece by Piece in a Museum!

Posted: 11 May 2011 10:40 AM PDT

You may remember the international media launch of the Lamborghini Aventador held last month in Rome. There were so many videos coming from Italy's capital that we didn't know where to start from. And guess what? It ain't over yet as we have one more video, one far more interesting. Among the many events related to the Aventador launch there was also a display inside the "Chiostro del Bramante", a contemporary art museum located in the historical center of Rome.

Entitled "La Forza del Toro" (Italian for "The Force of the Bull"), the exhibition consisted of a Lamborghini Aventador and five V12 engines from different periods of time. Nothing out of the ordinary so far, except the fact that builders of the 16th century building erected it without anticipating that a 2.03-meter wide, 4.78-meter long supercar would one day have to come inside…

All-New 2012 Mercedes-Benz A-Class Hatchback Revealed in Patent Images

Posted: 11 May 2011 10:10 AM PDT

We first saw Mercedes-Benz's intentions for the upcoming 2012 A-Class series at both the New York and Shanghai auto show in mid-April with the unveiling of a sexy-looking, three-door concept model, but now, we can offer you a look at the production version thanks to these images from the European patent office.

The model seen here is the five-door hatchback version of the new A-Class, which, if our sources are correct, will make its world premiere at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show in Germany this September. The production A-Class appears to be closely modeled after the concept version, albeit with less dramatic body surfacing and detailing. For example, the nose has been lifted up and is less aggressively styled than on the prototype study.

VIDEO: This is What a Pagani Huayra Sounds Like on the Track

Posted: 11 May 2011 09:13 AM PDT

We know many of you have been waiting for a while to get an acoustic flavor of the much-hyped Pagani Huayra, and now, thanks to the recordings of Youtube's supercar buff, Marchettino, so we'll keep this post short and sweet in the name of expediency.

Marchettino attached a video camera on the rear corner of the Huayra as the supercar made a quick lap around the Adria International Raceway, which is located the Veneto region of Northern Italy. The result? Well, let's just say that we weren't exactly thrilled from the sounds of the V12, but keep in mind this may be due to the poor fitting or quality of the camera.

Saab Boss Victor Muller Hints at US and EU Distribution of China's Hawtai Cars, Says Buyers Won’t Care about Safety

Posted: 11 May 2011 09:15 AM PDT

The ink on the deal / partnership between Saab and China's Hawtai Motor Group has barely dried, but the Swedish automaker's chairman and Spyker CEO, Victor Muller is already making headlines again by hinting at the distribution of cheap Chinese cars in the United States, Europe and elsewhere through Saab's established global network.

"We laughed when the Japanese came. We laughed when the Koreans came. But we will not be laughing when the Chinese come. The Chinese are like a steamroller," said Victor Muller, during a press event in Washington, D.C.

Muller said that if an agreement is reached with Hawtai, the Chinese maker could make use of Saab's distribution network to sell its cars globally.

"It took 67 years to build up our dealer network. It is the biggest asset not on our asset sheet, and these guys buy into it for free. If they make the proper cars, can you image how much simpler it will be to push product through the distribution network that is already there? It is like a railway network that is already there," said Muller.
