It’s Coming from Down Under: Joss Development’s JP1 Supercar

Posted: 26 May 2011 05:06 PM PDT

It's been a very long time in the making, but it looks like Melbourne-based JOSS Developments is nearing the production phase of its V8-powered supercar model, internally codenamed JP1. The company today announced that it will preview the future production version of the JP1 at the forthcoming Australian International Motor Show (AIMS), which takes place this year at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Center from July 1 to 10.

The Australian startup said it will showcase an evaluation prototype as well as a wind tunnel model of the production JP1 and select componentry from its technical partners. This will be the second time that JOSS Developments will be exhibiting the vehicle to the public after the appearance of an early prototype model in Melbourne in 2004.

Pakistan’s Hell Road is Not for the Faint Hearted [Video]

Posted: 26 May 2011 04:14 PM PDT

Pakistan's 240 kilometre (149 mile) Lowari Pass is the only supply route between the town of Dir and the small villages in the mountainous Chitral Valley. It is here on the Afghan border in the country's northwest that truckers risk their lives for a paltry US$60 (Pakistan's average wage) and a bonus of US$180...if they make it back alive and with their precious cargo unharmed.

The trucks are old, some nearing the one million-kilometer mark (620,000 mile) on the odometer, with avalanches, landslides and falling rocks marking the four-day journey. The roads are worn and there are no crash barriers; there is not even enough room for two trucks to pass side by side. The highest point is 3,100 metres (10,170 feet) above sea level where the air is so thin it is difficult to stay awake or even move. Brakes overheat on the descent and without them death is a long drop to oblivion.

Posted: 26 May 2011 03:21 PM PDT

Hansjörg von Gemmingen has gained the bragging rights to say he has covered more miles in a Tesla Roadster than anybody else has. The German racked up an impressive 100,000 kilometers (62,137 miles) since he first purchased the car less than two years ago. A stockbroker living in the southwest part of the country, von Gemmingen says he drives his Tesla on a daily basis regardless of purpose or distance, charging it every night through a standard household outlet. SCOOP: Is this the New 2013 Opel / Vauxhall Astra Convertible?

Posted: 26 May 2011 02:30 PM PDT

With the new sporty looking three-door Astra GTC on its way and the Astra Sedan outlined by its sister models from Buick's US (2012 Verano) and China (Excelle) divisions, the only body style left to complete the range of Opel's C-segment model series is the convertible version.

Recently, our spies in Germany caught a glimpse of an Astra-based model, which appears to be the cabriolet variant of the series. While we can't be 100 percent sure, it is clear that this Astra has a boot while the close ups reveal a more raked rear windshield line than you'd normally expect to see on a four-door family sedan.

To get an idea of what the Astra Convertible might look like, here's our artist's impression based on the upcoming GTC model Even though our image of Opel's VW Golf Cabriolet contender was styled with a soft-top, it has not yet been revealed if the German company will adopt this solution or if it will continue to use the current Astra TwinTop's retractable metal roof.

Wittera Releases Widebody Kit for the Corvette C5

Posted: 26 May 2011 12:40 PM PDT

For those Corvette C5 owners that think their cars could do with a little aero improvements, German aftermarket specialist Wittera has the answer: a new widebody aero package along with a light tuning program.

The widebody kit is offered in either carbon fiber or high-grade glass fiber-reinforced plastic, the latter of which undergoes a special process the company calls tempering. This means parts are heated to exactly 65° C (149 ° F) and then cooled down in a mold for 25 minutes in order to increase resistance and avoid cracks. The carbon fiber parts are 20 percent lighter than those made from glass fiber-reinforced plastic.

New On-The-Spot Fines to Target Britain’s Persistently Reckless Drivers

Posted: 26 May 2011 12:03 PM PDT

The UK Department of Transport (DoT) intends to crack down on reckless drivers by granting its police force the power to issue on-the-spot fines for acts such as tailgating, undertaking (bad pun alert) and, "cutting up" other road users. These penalties will range from £80 to £100 (US$130 to US$162) and also apply to those caught using mobile phones.

It's all part of a crackdown on what UK Transport Secretary Philip Hammond deems, "persistently dangerous drivers," and will also encompass drunk and drug-affected road users as well.

Chevrolet Shows How it Tests the 2011 Camaro Convertible’s Top

Posted: 26 May 2011 11:23 AM PDT

A new video from General Motors gives us an insight on how its engineers test the durability of the 2011 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible's soft-top. The company said that during the development phase, the electrically operated tops of the prototype models were opened and closed more than 22,500 times, which is claimed to be three times more than what an average driver would do in 10 years of use. GM added that some of those tests were performed in extreme weather conditions with temperatures ranging from minus-22° F to 170° F and humidity of up to 95 percent. Read more »

By the People, for the People: Volkswagen Asks China to Help it Design a New Model

Posted: 26 May 2011 09:52 AM PDT

Here's an idea: why not simply ask the public what they want in a car? Focus groups are one thing, but Volkswagen is taking this concept to extremes with its newly launched People's Car Project. The ostensible goal of the project is to solicit advice from some of China's 450 million internet users; advise that will shape a new model for the Chinese domestic market.

Dubbed "mass manufacturing" by Volkswagen, the Orwellian-sounding project will run for one year and gather Chinese consumers' input in the form of text, images and film through the Zaoche website. There will also be competitions where users can vote for their favourite designs, and prizes will be handed out to the best. If proven successful, the same idea could be implemented in other regions as well.

Airbag Fail, But Not the Way You Might Think….

Posted: 26 May 2011 09:07 AM PDT

It is full of air, it reacts in a fraction of a second and has saved thousands of lives over the years. We're talking about the automotive airbag, the invention of which is credited to an American industrial engineer and member of the U.S. Navy, John W. Hetrick, who patented the original system in the beginning of the 1950s. As is often the case with innovative designs and ideas, the importance of the airbag in safety was neglected at first and it took several more decades for automakers to accept and incorporate it into mainstream vehicles.

But along with automakers, came some not so bright individuals who found a new use for the car airbag which doesn't involve safety but the exact opposite. Joining a long line of bored but dim-witted folks who pass their time playing around with airbags is this man. You can enjoy his encounter with the safety cushion and see what happens next in the video after the break.
