The Ferrari Graveyard from Japan's $4 Million Supercar Pileup

Posted: 03 Feb 2012 05:55 PM PST

True, it's been close to two months since the world's most expensive car pileup took place in Japan destroying more than two dozen premium models including eight Ferraris and a Lamborghini with an estimated combined cost of US$4 million, but one of our readers pointed us this to video which we hadn't seen before.

The clip shows some of the supercars involved in the accident including the white Ferrari Testarossa and several F360s at a parking lot somewhere in Japan. Apparently, this is where the cars were taken to after the mishap.

A whole lot of crumpled metal follows in the video below.

Woman Wins $10K in Spat with Honda over Civic Hybrid's Fuel Economy, Carmaker Says it will Appeal

Posted: 03 Feb 2012 04:24 PM PST

Lately, fuel economy figures are becoming something of a hot issue in the U.S. After the Consumer Watchdog-Hyundai Elantra debacle we told you about earlier today, we have another case of a car manufacturer accused of misleading customers about one of its model's fuel economy claims.

Heather Peters, a former lawyer who lives in Southern California, took Honda to a small-claims court. She accused the carmaker of lying about her 2006 Civic Hybrid's fuel efficiency as she never managed to reach the estimates advertised by Honda.

And guess what? Peters won the case and the court awarded her US$9,867. LA Superior Court Commissioner Douglas Carnahan wrote a 26-page decision, which included a long list of misleading statements made by Honda and identified by Peters, such as "amazingly little fuel" and "save plenty of money of fuel with up to 50 mpg during city driving."

Spy Shots: 2013 Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Break Shows up in a New Shade

Posted: 03 Feb 2012 03:11 PM PST

The second generation of the CLS sports sedan will soon have an equally, if not more interesting sibling called the Shooting Brake.

This is not the first time we've snagged the sleek-looking estate model as our spies have captured both photos and a video of prototypes while testing in Europe, the only difference being now the burgundy shade of its lightly camouflaged body.

The CLS Shooting Brake will be less roomy than its E-Class Estate sibling, but at the same time offer a larger boot and increased practicality over the CLS sedan while retaining the latter's elegant lines.

Justice Has Been Served: Frustrated Drivers Knock Over Audi A3 that was Blocking the Road!

Posted: 03 Feb 2012 02:19 PM PST

Usually, when an insensitive driver double-parks on the road blocking the way to other vehicles, all it takes is a call to the police to get things sorted out. But there comes a time when frustrated drivers take matters into their own hands…

Which is what happened in Exarcheia, a neighborhood in downtown Athens, Greece, when the owner of what looks like a fairly new Audi A3 Sportback parked in front of a couple of large metal trash bins partially blocking the road.

While most passenger cars were able to make it through, a city bus that was making its routine trek around town couldn't fit. The bus driver along with the other drivers that were piling up behind kept honking again and again but to no avail; the owner of the Audi was nowhere to be seen.

Infiniti Says it's Mulling a GT-R Based Halo Supercar

Posted: 03 Feb 2012 01:30 PM PST

Isn't it strange how things turn out sometimes? In March 2011, one of our readers tipped us off on a 2004 Infiniti G35 Coupe dressed up to look like a Nissan GT-R that she had found in Quebec, Canada.

A few months later, the group's head-honcho, Carlos Ghosn, hinted an Infiniti version of the Godzilla, but he was neither here nor there.

"If you ask me, 'are we going to do that', I would say 'no, I don't think so'", said Ghosn. But then he added: "If your question is 'could we do that', I would say 'yes'. All technologies developed for Nissan are available to Infiniti."

Now, CAR Magazine is reporting that Nissan's luxury arm is indeed considering building such a model. According to the British publication, Infiniti's head of advanced planning Francois Bancon admitted that the company is currently looking at producing a "halo" model based on the GT-R's running gear.

Around 1,800 new jobs will be added to the Chrysler Group's Belvidere Assembly Plant by the third quarter of 2012, the company's CEO Sergio Marchionne announced on Thursday during a ceremony at the facility with Illinois Governor Pat Quinn.

Included in the 1,800 positions are close to 500 jobs that will be added to launch production of the 2013 Dodge Dart in the second quarter of the year. For this reason, the Detroit automaker will be adding a third shift to the plant, something that hasn't happened since March of 2008 when the Belvidere facility employed around 3,600 workers.

Toyota's "Connections" Super Bowl Ad will Take you from Zero to Snooze in 61 Seconds

Posted: 03 Feb 2012 01:32 PM PST

Toyota has a secret weapon against its rivals in this year's Super Bowl (well, at least those that have scheduled to air their commercials after the Japanese company): it's called "Connections" and it's one of two spots that it will run during the big game.

Provided you haven't already fallen asleep from the soft voiceover heard in the background, the only vaguely interesting part of the commercial is the appearance of a jacked up older generation Camry riding on massive alloy wheels at around 40 seconds into the clip.

Now that you've been warned, feel free to hop over the break to watch Toyota's second Super Bowl XLVI spot.

F1: Ferrari Launches New F2012 Car, Massa Warned that he Must do “Something Special” this Year

Posted: 03 Feb 2012 09:32 AM PST

The bad weather that is currently torturing much of Europe has forced Ferrari to make a last-minute change of plans for its 2012 Formula 1 car launch.

While it was initially scheduled to be revealed at Maranello, and then make its maiden test at the Fiorano circuit, the heavy snow that was more suited to the Ferrari-special Grand Cherokee than an F1 car resulted in the new F2012 to be launched via an online presentation.

Compared to last year's F150o, which celebrated the 150th anniversary of the Italian Republic, Ferrari's new Formula 1 car has a very unimaginative designation. But names don't matter that much; after all, the 2011 car had only one win to its credit.

Did Hyundai Omit 40mpg Claim on Elantra Super Bowl ad Because of Consumer Watchdog?

Posted: 03 Feb 2012 10:38 AM PST

It happens to every new car buyer: you look at the car's specs and among other things; you take notice of its official fuel economy numbers. Then you may discover that in real-world conditions, the mileage you eke out of a single tank is nowhere near the quoted figure.

The discrepancy is sometimes so big that you are either driving like a maniac (which in some cases may be true), or there's something's fishy with the official mileage estimates. Are consumers tricked by carmakers as far as fuel consumption is concerned, as some claim?

Consumer Watchdog (CW), a non-profit organization that advocates taxpayer and consumer interests, believes so and is making a fuss about it. The organization has urged the EPA to perform tests itself and has even threatened to employ "guerilla" tactics if its demands are not satisfied.

The latest issue was about Hyundai's Super Bowl commercial for the 2012 Elantra that appeared on YouTube.

And the claws are out! Chevrolet makes no apologies for its new commercial on the Silverado pickup truck that will air during the first quarter of Super Bowl XLVI on Sunday.

Once they assemble, they notice that one of their buddies didn't make it to the meeting point – the missing friend happens to own a Ford…

You can take a look at Chevy's "2012" Super Bowl ad in the video after the break.

Edo Competition Bestows Porsche Panamera Turbo S with 700-horses

Posted: 03 Feb 2012 07:12 AM PST

We are inclined to disagree with Edo Competition's claims that its new Porsche Panamera Turbo S tune with 700-horsepower is the most powerful version of the saloon ever as a quick look at our archive proves otherwise; the tuner itself had presented a 750HP version of the car called "Moby Dick" back in January 2011…

That's not to say the Edo Competition's Panamera Turbo S isn't fast. On the contrary, thanks to a series of modifications ncluding new exhaust manifolds and turbochargers, high-flow catalytic converters and air filters plus an ECU tweak, the V8 gains 150HP and 130 Nm (96 lb-ft) of torque for a total of 700 horsepower and 880 Nm (649 lb-ft).

Mercedes-Benz Sketches New Citan Deliver Van Co-Developed with Renault-Nissan

Posted: 03 Feb 2012 06:25 AM PST

These are the first official sketches of Mercedes-Benz's all-new Citan, which the German automaker describes as an 'urban delivery van'. The Citan will make its world premiere at the IAA Commercial Vehicle Show in Hannover this September and go on sale before the end of the year.

In spite of the fact that Mercedes-Benz does not mention it in its press release, the automaker had previously revealed that the small van was developed in partnership with the Renault-Nissan alliance as part of their strategic collaboration, which includes several more projects such as the Twingo/Smart platform and powertrain cross-supply.

The Citan broadens Mercedes-Benz's offerings in in the lower weight classes of the van market, which include the Vito (2.77 to 3.2 tons), Sprinter (3.0 to 5.0 tons) and Vario (6.0 to 8.2 tons).

The German company said that the small van segment has picked up in sales these past couple of decades and has now grown to around 700,000 units in Europe alone. It added that it plans to gain a market share of four to five percent in this segment with the Citan, which equals to 28,000 to 35,000 units a year in Europe.
