Suzuki GSX-R Rider Does the Ninja Flip Over Guardrails at Mulholland Drive

Posted: 21 Feb 2012 05:50 PM PST

Another day, another motorcycle crash at California's scenic Mulholland Drive. Only this time, the rider of the Kawasaki-colored Suzuki GSX-R motorcycle involved in the accident didn't seem to be speeding, though we can't say with certainty what caused him to lose control of the bike.

As scary as the crash looks when he flipped over the guardrails, the driver didn't suffer any serious injuries as he was able…climbed back up to the road by himself and pick up his motorcycle.

Do the ninja flip over the break to watch the video footage of the crash.

Ford Reinvents the Transit with Tourneo Passenger Van Concept

Posted: 21 Feb 2012 04:34 PM PST

Ford will squash speculation on how the next generation of the Transit will look like with the world premiere of the all-new Tourneo Custom Concept at the 82nd Geneva International Auto Show.

Not to be confused with the upcoming North American market Transit that is a separate model, the new concept van previews the next family of one-ton Transit people movers and commercial vehicles for Europe and Asia.

The production version of the Tourneo, which will be introduced along with the rest of the Transit range later in 2012, will compete against the VW Caravelle.

"One look at the Tourneo Custom Concept is enough to tell you that it will inject an exciting new spirit into the personal use segment," said Stephen Odell, CEO of Ford Europe.

Formula 1: Mercedes GP Unveils New W03 at Barcelona

Posted: 21 Feb 2012 04:02 PM PST

The SL63 AMG may have been a nice surprise, but the real reason why the press was gathered today at the Circuit de Catalunya track in Spain was the launch of Mercedes' brand-new fighter for the 2012 Formula 1 championship.

Mercedes GP chose the first day of FIA's second official pre-season test in Barcelona to unveil the W03. Admittedly, it has come late to the party, as the company's F1 racer was launched later than most of its competitors, but the team reckons that this was a good thing, since it gave them more time to hone the car.

Truck Driver Forgets Crane and Smashes into a Bridge

Posted: 21 Feb 2012 03:26 PM PST

Being that no one was hurt, we can honestly say the funniest part of this video showing a Russian truck driver that forgot to retract the crane sticking up from the back isn't that he or she crashed into a bridge, but the aftermath as the vehicle snapped in half. Nice work indeed.

Just imagine trying to explain this incident to your boss… You can check out the video of the crash and discover where that Modern Talking tape you lost back in the 1990s ended up right after the jump.

New 2013 Lexus ES Sedan Makes an Unexpected Appearance in China

Posted: 21 Feb 2012 02:45 PM PST

We knew Lexus was preparing a replacement for its five-year old ES sedan, but we weren't expecting to see the actual production model making its first appearance in China – not that we're complaining.

Surprisingly, casting aside some stickers on the alloy rims and a…craftily folded newspaper to hide the instrument binnacle and the steering wheel hub, the 2013 ES is virtually camouflage free.

And while this is probably the China market version, don't expect to see any noteworthy differences over the North American model that should follow later this year.

Like its predecessors, the sixth generation of Lexus' base luxury sedan is built upon the chassis of the Toyota Camry (the 2012 model in this case) featuring its own sheetmetal and interior designs.

First Official Shots of 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG

Posted: 21 Feb 2012 01:53 PM PST

The new Mercedes-Benz SL 63 AMG roadster made its first appearance this morning when F1 drivers Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg presented the car at the German team's official Formula One test in Barcelona, Spain, ahead of its world premiere at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show in early March.

At the heart of the high-performance version of the new SL is AMG's new M157 engine, which is used on a variety of other Mercedes models such as the CLS 63 AMG sports saloon and the ML 63 AMG SUV.

The 5.5-liter twin-turbocharged V8 unit is good for 529bhp and 590 lb-ft of torque, propelling the hardtop roadster from standstill to 60mph (96km/h) in 4.2 seconds en route to an electronically governed top speed of 155mph (250km/h).

Video Tour of Lamborghini’s 2008 Estoque Super Sedan Concept

Posted: 21 Feb 2012 01:12 PM PST

Supercar makers usually have a limited line-up compared to normal manufacturers. However, when you only have two models and both are mid-engined two-seaters like Lamborghini does, then you are seriously limiting your clientele.

To address this problem, the VW Group-owned Italian company has made plans to add a third model to its range. All reports point to either a four-door super saloon, similar to the Aston Martin Rapide, or a high-end SUV, a spiritual successor to the late 1980s LM002.

When Lamborghini presented the Estoque sedan concept at the 2008 Paris Motor Show, most assumed that eventually, this would be the one to get the green light.

Man Proves to Newt Gingrich that You Can Put a Gun Rack in a Chevy Volt

Posted: 21 Feb 2012 12:43 PM PST

It's amazing how fast people react these days. While campaigning in Suwanee, Georgia, a couple of days ago, Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich attacked President Barack Obama on his plans to increase subsidies for alternative fuel-powered cars.

Gingrich started by making fun of the green car lobby. "How dare we go out and drive vehicles bigger than their bicycles!" said the former House Speaker before he aimed his guns on the Chevrolet Volt.

"You know the Volt is an interesting experimental car," said Gingrich. "The average family that buys it earns $170,000 a year. This is Obama's idea of populism. And in this new budget he wants to increase the amount given to every Volt buyer to $10,000. Which is an amount which a lot of people would by a decent second-hand car, but it wouldn't be an 'Obama' car."

Spied: Kia Prepares Sorento Crossover for its First Makeover

Posted: 21 Feb 2012 12:03 PM PST

Now in its third year of production, Kia's Sorento crossover is getting ready for its first mid-life facelift, possibly for the 2013 model year.

Judging by these spy pictures of a prototype model being trialed in Europe, we will see changes to the front fascia with newly designed headlamps featuring the very BMW-like "eyebrow" accents on top, as seen on recent Kia models such as the Cee'd hatchback, together with a tweaked grille and a new bumper design.

Realistic Homemade Gaming Cockpit Complete, See How it Turned Out

Posted: 21 Feb 2012 10:42 AM PST

Earlier this month, we showed you the initial building phase of a homemade racing game cockpit designed by YouTube user "Nbjag".

The project has since been completed and we now have the first video of Nbjag's realistic gaming rig that was built around the internals of a first generation, 1990s Opel Astra

The simulator is based on a wooden frame, to which the builder attached the dashboard, center console, door panels and a section of the roof from an Astra, along with a pair of leather seats sourced from a Jaguar XJ8, to create an ultra realistic environment while playing racing games like the GT5.

U.S. Government wants to Increase Clean Car Federal Tax Credits to $10,000

Posted: 21 Feb 2012 10:14 AM PST

President Barack Obama is determined to make cars in the U.S. as clean as possible. After reaching an agreement with major manufacturers about the 54.5 mpg CAFE target set for 2025, he now plans to increase the federal income tax credit for alternative fuel-powered cars.

The proposal, which is included in the 2013 budget, raises the maximum credit by as much as US$2,500 for certain plug-in models. Currently, the maximum tax credit is US$7,500.

Under the provision, vehicles with a MSRP of US$45,000 and above would received up to US$7,500, while models below that price would be eligible for the full US$10,000 credit.

Saab 9-3 gets Another Chance in Life in China as an All-Electric Model from BAIC

Posted: 21 Feb 2012 10:44 AM PST

We have been critical of the clones produced by Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Co. (BAIC for short) such as its Mercedes B-Class doppelganger called the BC301Z, but the Saab 9-3 sedan pictured above is actually legit.

You see, GM sold the intellectual rights for Saab's older generation 9-5 and 9-3s along with select powertrain technology and tooling equipment to China's BAIC for US$200 million back in 2009, when it still owned the Swedish carmaker.

BAIC's subsidiary Beijing Auto Works (BAW) had previewed its own versions of the Saab 9-3 and 9-5 sedans with two separate concepts called the C60 and C71 respectively, during the 2010 Beijing Auto Show.

For its next move, BAIC is finishing work on a pure-electric model based on the Saab 9-3. Codenamed the Q60FB-C1, it will likely make its first public outing at the upcoming 2012 Beijing Auto Show in April.

So, Superman is Real After All? DIY Car Stunt is Super Funny

Posted: 21 Feb 2012 08:40 AM PST

Look out the window…it's a bird…it's a plane…it's Superman! Well, not exactly as the person impersonating the man of steel in this YouTube video that went viral picking up close to half-a-million views in just a few days, is only human, albeit one with a very good sense of humor.

The video shows a young man hypothetically "flying" besides the vehicle and knocking on the front window, signaling to the passenger to roll it down. He then asks her in Spanish for directions to San José.

The woman points straight and our "super hero" thanks her before he swoops up, up and away…and back to the rear seat.

Revealed without its racing colors, the new Civic Next Generation Touring Car (NGTC) made its first public test outing today at the Brands Hatch motor racing circuit in England.

GM Relies on Euro Operations for the Development of North American Chevy Cruze's Diesel Engine

Posted: 21 Feb 2012 06:06 AM PST

When it comes to diesel technology, Europe is king and all for good reason as diesel-powered models account for roughly half of all sales across the continent.

Therefore, it's no wonder that General Motors tapped its European operations for the development of the diesel engine to be offered on the North American market Chevrolet Cruze sedan.

The Detroit automaker tells us that the new diesel unit is being developed by the powertrain engineers at GM's diesel center of excellence in Torino, Italy, with the help of their counterparts in Pontiac, Michigan, while Opel's engineers in Russelsheim, Germany, are also supporting the program by developing the accessory drive, acoustic cover and other specialized components.
