If you read the engineering licencing rules for most states, you can get in
a lot of trouble if you claim to be an "engineer" no matter what your
college degree claims. I maintained a PE licence for many years, but finally
got tired of paying the fees and keeping up with the educational
requiremetns and I let my licence laspe. This wasn't a problem for me since
I have no desire to sell my services to the public as an "engineer." I work
for a company and they can all me an engineer as often as they feel like it
If you do want to sell your "engineerng talent," to the public, you can
always call yourself a design consultant or structural consultant or just a
consultant and avoid the licencing board's wrath. Of course if you want to
seal plans required by the government, then you need a licence. In that
case, you have to play by the rules.
