The Price of Saving Two of America’s Big Three? $14 Billion, but it Could have Been Worse

Posted: 26 Jul 2011 06:08 PM PDT

Here's a fun little activity for our readership: check out the U.S. National Debt Clock website and take a gander at the figure under, "U.S. National Debt".

That number is a little over US$14 trillion (€9.67 trillion), and is probably one of the reasons President Obama is having trouble sleeping at night. Around 0.1% of that is the loss the U.S. Treasury suffered by bailing out two of America's big three automakers: General Motors and Chrysler.

At the height of the Global Financial Crisis in 2008, the U.S. government spent $80 billion (€55.2 billion) to save the auto-industry. Of that amount, US$14.6 billion (€10.08 billion) has been lost, never to be reclaimed. It comes as sobering news given the current state of the U.S.'s ever-growing national debt.

Posted: 26 Jul 2011 04:29 PM PDT

Unless you are enjoying a Fast and Furious flick on the couch, in real life, you rarely hear about car thieves stealing a bunch of vehicles from the same owner.

Yet this happened in the Canadian city of Calgary where some very slick bandits made off with not one, not two but a dozen (!) brand new vehicles from a local Nissan dealership.

The Calgary police said that the thieves broke in the Sunridge Nissan dealership on Sunday , July 24, and stole the keys from 20 different models including sedans, SUVs and trucks, but managed to drive away with "only" 12 vehicles.

Malignant Rumors: Bentley May Build a Super Luxurious SUV

Posted: 26 Jul 2011 03:26 PM PDT

There are some things in the auto industry that one takes for granted: Fiat is best known for its small cars like the Panda and Punto; Land Rover for its ultra-capable 4x4s like the Defender and the Disco and Ferrari for its glorious-sounding supercars.

In Bentley's case, it's the hand-crafted luxury coupes and sedans, but change is inevitable (especially if you operate under the umbrella of the VW Group…).

New Hyundai Azera and Fiat 500 Abarth Confirmed for LA Show

Posted: 26 Jul 2011 02:50 PM PDT

Ah Twitter; the land of 140-characters where you can follow anyone without creeping them out has lately turned into something like a news board for automakers.

Instead of releasing an announcement on their respective websites, Fiat and Hyundai chose the social network to broadcast their 2011 LA Show debuts, which include the 2012 Azera and the 500 Abarth.

Starting from Hyundai, the South Korean automaker that could, will bring to LA the North American market version of its next generation Azera sedan, which has already been launched in its home market as the Grandeur.

It Came From eBay Hell: 2006 Excalibur Limousine

Posted: 26 Jul 2011 02:12 PM PDT

Cruella de Vil, your car has arrived. This 2006 Excalibur limousine was once a scanty 2000 Lincoln Town Car Signature Edition and challenges the notion that anything would be better than the latter.

It now has a front end styled like a 1930 Stutz, though this car has more in common with the hideous Stutz Blackhawk of the 1970s.

Michigan Representatives Say 56 mpg Target Will Lead to Unemployment, Urge President Obama to Reconsider

Posted: 26 Jul 2011 11:56 AM PDT

Two Democrat Senators, Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow, along with 14 House members from Michigan disputed President Obama's informally proposed 56 mpg target for 2025 in a direct letter that predicts a loss of many American jobs if it comes into effect.

"We are deeply concerned that the administration's `starting' proposal of a five percent annual increase for cars and light trucks -- to reach a goal of 56.2 miles per gallon in 2025 -- is overly aggressive and not reasonable feasible," the 16 Michigan representatives said in their message to the President.

Posted: 26 Jul 2011 10:17 AM PDT

Once upon a time, in the land of the free and the home of the brave, most consumers liked their cars with six- or eight-cylinder engines. Blame the rising costs of fuels or advances in technology, but now, American buyers are turning to smaller 4-cylinder units in increasing numbers.

According to a report from IHS Automotive, in the first half of the year, more than 43% of the light vehicles sold in the US were equipped with four-cylinder engines, compared to just 30% five years ago.

GM Says 2013 Chevrolet Malibu Will Treat Your Buttocks Like Royalty

Posted: 26 Jul 2011 08:59 AM PDT

There's more than meets the eye when it comes to the development of a new vehicle and its individual components, and like all automakers, GM pays particular attention to the design of the seats – let's not forget, that's where the driver and passengers will spend their time in the car.

Understandably, the design process becomes more complicated in the event that the car is a global model like the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu, which will be offered in nearly 100 countries on six continents, including the U.S. where it will arrive in showrooms next year.

Posted: 26 Jul 2011 06:35 AM PDT

The 275-horsepower Mazda MX-5 GT racecar, which competes in the 2011 Britcar Production GTN Championship, has inspired the Japanese firm's UK division to develop a pair of limited edition models based on the MX-5 and the Mazda2 for the local market.

The word "inspired" should be taken very loosely as the Sport Black Editions of the two Mazda models do not feature any performance upgrades and are all about bespoke color choices and additional standard features.
