It Came From eBay Hell: Mercury Cougar Based Bugatti Veyron Replica

Posted: 12 Jul 2011 06:59 PM PDT

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a winner. Of all the cars I've featured in "It Came From eBay Hell", this one takes the cake. It's a 2002 Mercury Cougar with 120,000 miles (193,120 kilometres) on the clock, though that's not what makes it special. No, what makes it special is the composite and fibreglass Bugatti Veyron body draped over it.

That's right: it's a Cougatti Vercuryon! Not only does this modern masterpiece come with (Walmart™ Brand) 20-inch rims, two-tone paint and leather everything, it also comes with all the stuff that made the Mercury Cougar the modern classic it is today:

*2012 BMW 1-Series Hatchback Pictured above
It's no secret that BMW is getting ready to adopt a front-wheel drive layout for its smaller models including certain versions of the next generation of the 1-Series. BMW's decision has already sparked a lot of discussions whether its front-wheel drive products will remain true to the brand's "ultimate driving machine" motto or an insult to the company's heritage.

Now it seems that the day we will see the first front-wheel drive BMW is closer than we thought. According to Autocar magazine, the 1-Series GT, which is said to be a more practical version featuring a high-rising tail like the 5-Series GT, will be the first BMW to adopt front-wheel drive. Its launch is scheduled for 2014.

Union of Concerned Scientists Releases 2011 Hybrid Scorecard: Prius = Good, Touareg Hybrid = Bad

Posted: 12 Jul 2011 03:00 PM PDT

The Union of Concerned Scientist, a non-profit science advocacy group in the U.S., has released its second annual Hybrid Scorecard. The organisation criticised hybrid car manufacturers for not delivering on the technology's promise, for placing performance above fuel efficiency and environmental benefit and burdening hybrids with features that put them out of the price range of average Americans.

A total of 34 hybrid vehicles from the 2011 to 2012 model year were tested for their fuel efficiency, environmental impact, value-for-money and their so-called "forced-feature premium". The latter is features that don't improve fuel efficiency but probably make the cars more appealing to money-conscious consumers.

Some guys have all the luck. Like Jay Leno. Not only is he a famous and wealthy TV presenter, but he also gets to drive a bevy of new cars well before anyone else.

After driving the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG E-Cell, which won't enter production for another two years, and the new SLS Roadster wasn't enough, Leno was also invited to VW's headquarters at Wolfsburg to try out the new Beetle.

GM Rumored to Offer Chevy Cruze with a 50mpg Diesel in the USA

Posted: 12 Jul 2011 01:26 PM PDT

Citing two unnamed people that were briefed earlier this week on GM's future product plans, the Detroit Free Press reported today that the company is mulling the addition of a diesel engine to the Chevrolet Cruze's range.

According to the insiders, a diesel version of the Cruze would return a highway fuel economy of around 50mpg rivaling the efficiency of the Toyota Prius hybrid which is rated at 51 mpg (4.6 lt/100 km) in the city and 48mpg (4.9 lt/100 km) on the highway. A diesel Cruze would also help GM meet the more demanding government gas mileage rules.

Audi Q7 Pickup Truck Photo Begs the Question: Is it Real or Fake?

Posted: 12 Jul 2011 12:52 PM PDT

This photograph of an Audi Q7 SUV turned into a pickup with an aluminum truck bed appeared today on several sites, all pointing towards an Audi fan blog as the source.

Over the years, we've seen one too many photo-chops making the internet rounds to take everything we see online for granted. In this case, even though there appears to be an inconsistency in the shadows between the lower parts of the front door and the rear panel, we just can't be 100 percent sure.

China Hopes To Poach Overseas Automotive Engineering Talent

Posted: 12 Jul 2011 12:11 PM PDT

China has a problem. Although it has the financial and material resources to compete with the world's automakers, it lacks the design and engineering knowhow.

The solution – to companies such as BAIC, Dongfeng, Chang'an and others – is to seek talent abroad; in Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK and USA. Research and development centres are popping up in Nottingham and Detroit and recruitment fairs are being held in Munich, Stuttgart and Aachen

Kanye West Beware: BMW’s 1-Series Composes its Own Music

Posted: 12 Jul 2011 10:57 AM PDT

It's a fact that car manufacturers go to great lengths to promote their new products. Traditional means like TV and press advertising are so last year –and so is celebrity endorsement, though they are still employed by the carmakers. However, the new place to be are the social media, like Facebook, Twitter and Youtube.

BMW has gone one step further in promoting its brand-new 2012 1-Series: it has created a video clip named "check my machine" which shows the process of manufacturing the car.

Volvo to Extend Driving Range of its EVs by Going the Way of the Chevy Volt

Posted: 12 Jul 2011 09:02 AM PDT

Electric Vehicles, or EVs, are the future. Or so the automakers say. And they would be correct, if it wasn't for a significant disadvantage over petrol or diesel powered models: their abysmal range which makes them suitable only for limited city use.

Volvo is taking measures to solve this problem and make its EVs attractive to the public by adding an extra 1,000 km (621 miles) to their range. The solution, which has also been adopted by other models such as the Chevrolet Volt and the Audi A1 E-Tron concept, is the addition of a "range extender" internal combustion engine.

UK Insurer Parts the Most Unreliable and Costly Car to Fix

Posted: 12 Jul 2011 08:43 AM PDT

In an article on a BMW-faced Honda Accord we found for sale on Craigslist back in 2008, we wrote that in a perfect world, our ultimate car would be "designed by Italians, engineered by Germans, built by Japanese and marketed by Americans".

So, what's the worst car one could imagine? Well, if we played around with the above statements, we'd say one designed by Japanese, engineered by Americans, built by Italians and marketed by Germans.

But UK insurance firm Warranty Direct had something a little bit different in mind. Instead of playing the origin card, the company decided to check out its database of 50,000 live policies on cars aged five years on average to part the UK's most unreliable vehicle that would break down every other month and cost an average of £2,050 (equal to US$3,270 - €2,330) to fix each year.

Ford Mustang Exotica Hides an Aston Martin Vanquish V12 Under its Hood [with Video]

Posted: 12 Jul 2011 07:58 AM PDT

We're pretty sure that, during the time Aston Martin was under the ownership of Ford, the thought of stuffing an exotic V12 powerplant under the bonnet of a Mustang must have crossed the mind of a few company engineers.

And while we never saw something of the sort officially from Ford, an independent custom shop actually realized the idea with the 2005 Ford Mustang 'Vanquishd' show car that was presented at the 2006 SEMA aftermarket gathering.

Built by Western Motorsports, this one-of-a-kind Mustang gets a 6.0-liter V12 engine with 600 ponies from a 2001 Aston Martin Vanquish. Power is sent to the chunky rear wheels through a 6 speed manual Tremec T-56 transmission.

Sir Stirling Moss Buys an Aston Martin Cygnet for his Wife

Posted: 12 Jul 2011 07:20 AM PDT

You would never think that an Aston Martin would need any sort of marketing push from a personality like Sir Stirling Moss, but to play around with our own words, up until recently, you would never think that Aston Martin would actually try to sell a hugely overpriced city car that's a rebadged Toyota model…

In any case, the British racing legend is one of the first customers to receive the Aston Martin Cygnet, which he purchased as a birthday gift to his wife, Lady Moss. Appropriately, there was a photographer in hand to capture the gift-wrapped Cygnet.
