SCOOP: All-New 2012 ML 63 AMG is Mercedes-Benz’s Answer to the BMW X5 M Posted: 04 Apr 2011 06:25 PM PDT Carscoop's spies have bagged new photos of the upcoming 2012 Mercedes-Benz ML 63 AMG testing in Germany. The most powerful member of the new M-Class family will compete against BMW's X5 M, which packs a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 engine pumping out 555HP and 680Nm or 501 lb-ft of peak torque. The current ML 63 AMG is powered by a naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V8 engine delivering -in U.S. spec- 503HP at 6,800 rpm and a peak torque of 465 lb-ft at 5,200 rpm. Even thought the 63 badge will remain, as with other new AMG models, the flagship version of the next ML will ditch the 6.2-liter lump for the firm's newly developed 5.5-liter twin-turbocharged V8 boasting direct-injection technology. VIDEO: Driver Smacks Lamborghini Gallardo on Curve, Blames Broken Shoe Heel Posted: 04 Apr 2011 03:16 PM PDT A twin-turbocharged Lamborghini Gallardo tuned by Underground Racing received an unwanted...facelift when the driver smashed the Italian supercar on a curve at the Caffeine and Octane event in Georgia this past weekend. A forum member who appears to be a friend of the car's owner uploaded several photos and a description of the crash over at the Car Lounge. According to the post, the blame is put on the driver's shoe heels that "came loose and as he stepped on the brakes, the loose part stayed partially on the gas". A set of videos showing the crash as it happened as well as the aftermath, which translates in a broken rear suspension, wheel damage and some minor body scruffs, also made their way online. You can watch them right after the break Read more » |
Android App Locks Down Your Cell Phone When You’re Driving Posted: 04 Apr 2011 02:36 PM PDT Oh, if only all those futurists from the 1930s could have predicted a device as wondrous as the Smart Phone. It's the communicator from Star Trek, a world atlas, the world's largest department store and a personal assistant / concierge all rolled into one. You could organise a wedding or run a global empire from one of these things, and many people do. Unfortunately, like seemingly everything humanity invents, it has its downsides as well. For some of us it can be addictive and overuse of these distracting devices can result in devastating consequences for one's self and others, especially when use in conjunction with another wonder of the last century: the automobile. Posted: 04 Apr 2011 01:49 PM PDT It is by far, the most sacred place for a BMW M fan. We're talking about the BMW M Division's underground facility where the company stores copies of all the production cars and prototypes it has ever built, including a variety of never before seen in public vehicles. In a surprising but much welcomed move, the German automaker recently opened the doors of the special M garage to the members of the press and select enthusiasts revealing an array of models that most had only heard about. We already brought you a video of the wild M8 Coupe with the 580-horsepower V12 engine that was eventually used on the McLaren F1, but now we have several videos showcasing the entire lineup of M cars. These include the E46 M3 Touring (BMW for station wagon), the E36 M3 Compact powered by the same 321HP straight-six from the M3 Coupe of the time, the E34 M5 Cabriolet with open-top seating for four, an M3 powered E30 ute and possibly the strangest creation yet, the so called Ur-Roadster. The latter is said to have been developed after the Z1 with power being delivered by the E30 M3's 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine. Read more » |

BMW M8: Video Walkaround of the Wildest 8-Series Powered by the Same V12 in the McLaren F1 Posted: 04 Apr 2011 12:44 PM PDT If there's one BMW M car that should have been built, that's without doubt the M8. Instead, the Bavarians gave us the diluted 850CSi that was powered by a modified version of the 850i's V12 engine with an incre00ased displacement of 5.6-liters pushing out 380-horsepower. Last week, BMW opened up the doors of its special M car garage to the press revealing a variety of unmade prototype models including the much talked about M8. The high-performance version of the 8-Series sported a bespoke V12 engine that later on found its way under the hood of the iconic McLaren F1. The twelve-cylinder unit was built around two six-cylinder engines sourced from the M3 of the era (E36) producing somewhere around 580-horsepower. Read more » |
VIDEO: The Ultimate Taxi Ride in a Rally-Spec Mitsubishi Lancer EVO Posted: 04 Apr 2011 11:39 AM PDT In a perfect world for gear-heads, a sweet taxi ride would involve a high performance sports car, preferably a racing model, and a qualified driver. Unfortunately, the WRC-like Mitsubishi Lancer EVO taxi seen in the video after the jump exists only in fantasy, as this clip is a commercial for a new 4G mobile broadband plan from Norwegian cell phone operator Netcom. VIDEO: Driver Gets the Fright of his Life when Wooden Plank Impales Car’s Windshield Posted: 04 Apr 2011 09:36 AM PDT It's perhaps a driver's worst nightmare: an object coming out of nowhere when you least expect it and don't have time to do anything about it. In this truly amazing video, yet at the same time shockingly scary, the object is a wooden plank that flies straight into the car's windshield just missing the driver. Of course he may just have avoided the plank if he hadn't been videotaping and driving at the same time, but that's another story… Watch the video after the jump. Read more » |
