California Set to Slash Lawmakers' Vehicle Costs in Half, No More Freebies

Posted: 15 Apr 2011 06:25 PM PDT

In an attempt to help reduce California's $26.6 billion deficit, the state's Citizens Compensation Commission has decided that members of the Senate and Assembly who drive state-sponsored vehicles will have their annual vehicle costs cut from $7,453 to $3,600. That boils down to $300 per month for expenses (gas, insurance, etc.), and oh, they'll have to drive their own cars as of December…

California lawmakers average an income of $131,000 per year before retirement benefits, and reducing vehicle costs is one minor cut that's being made for the betterment of the whole. Some people thought the measure was a bit too broad, not taking into account lawmakers' locations.

Saved by Antonov: Saab Sells Production Facilities to Russian Banker to Get Cash

Posted: 15 Apr 2011 02:39 PM PDT

The Swedish government offered
Saab conditional backing for a deal to free up cash for the company (see previous story here), whose production lines have been stopped for two weeks as Saab didn't pay suppliers. "We have decided to allow the Debt Office to conclude an agreement with Saab," said enterprise minister Maud Olofsson during a news conference on Friday.

The government has approved a proposal from the Debt Office to allow Saab to sell real estate, including the production plant, to Russian financier Vladimir Antonov and then lease it back from him. The minister said this deal would bring €30 million to Saab in the first phase, although the real estate was worth much more than that.

VIDEO: Indian Daredevils and the Well of Death

Posted: 15 Apr 2011 02:00 PM PDT

The 'circle of death' is neither new nor shocking, but it's one thing to see a professional stuntman who follows the necessary safety precautions doing it and another a group of gifted but nevertheless amateur daredevils going at it in a shoddy well made out of wooden planks with the crowd only inches away….

It Came from eBay Hell: Porsche 959 Speedster Replica

Posted: 15 Apr 2011 01:02 PM PDT

In 1986, the Porsche 959 was the world's fastest street legal product car. Some 337 of these road-going monsters were built but not one of them was a factory-finished convertible. Regardless of what you may have heard or seen on forums, such a vehicle was never sanctioned by Porsche. There was a one-off "Speedster" built by Auto-Becker for the 1989 Frankfurt Motor Show but that's about it.

So is this done and dusted? Of course not; this is the internet we're talking about. 959 Speedsters are sighted by Porsche enthusiasts as much as Elvis Presley or the Loch Ness monster. If you believe what you've read, these things are everywhere. And I do mean everywhere, even in New Zealand.

So our seller throws in the usual platitudes we've come to expect from this sort of posting like, "This is one very rare and special car," and that it was "professionally built".

Saab Roller Coaster Continues as Cash Gets Tight

Posted: 15 Apr 2011 12:37 PM PDT

Saab just can't seem to catch a break. After moving from the General's formerly overcrowded pocket into the hands of Spyker, the once-quirky brand is now doing all it can to bring production back online after failing to pay suppliers.

The gist is this: Saab received 400 million Euros (~$580 million) from the European Investment Bank so it could keep on ticking. Sweden guaranteed the loan, meaning whatever Spyker's resolution calls for must get the go-ahead from the Man.

Ugur Sahin Design Reveals Soleil Anadi, a Coachbuilt Corvette Priced at $299,995

Posted: 15 Apr 2011 11:49 AM PDT

This week's 2011 Top Marques car show in Monaco (April 14-17) welcomed the world premiere of the Soleil Anadi, a Coachbuilt Corvette that is the brainchild of Ugur Sahin, a Turkish designer based in the Netherlands. For the creation of the Anadi, Sahin formed a new company called Soleil Motors and joined forces with Ercole and Paolo Spada from Spada Concepts and Will Castro from Unique Autosport for the design of the vehicle.

The transformation of the Corvette to the Anadi takes place in Italy, with the company having opened its first showroom in Milan. Like the car it is based on, the Anadi comes equipped with a detachable roof but features new sheetmetal with a profile that brings to mind the Ferrari 599 and a bespoke rear end. The interior has also been fully customized but the show car seen in these photos, courtesy of our friends from Autoblog.nl, had tinted windows. The company said it will release pictures of the cabin at a later date.

Not surprisingly, the Auburn Hills-based automaker released very few details on its upcoming high-performance sports car as the only piece of information we get is that "SRT engineers expanded the development scope for the next generation Dodge Viper to include stability control tuning for the first time."

Posted: 15 Apr 2011 08:03 AM PDT

More and more carmakers are quietly abandoning their gentleman's agreement of limiting top speed of their production models to 250 km/h (155 mph), despite the fact that the only place in Europe to legally drive that fast is on certain sections of the German autobahn. The latest company to do so is Opel which has released a new version of its high-performance Insignia OPC called 'Unlimited' without an electronically-restricted top speed.

"We are responding to frequently expressed customer wishes," says Alain Visser, Vice President Sales, Marketing and Aftersales at Adam Opel AG. "Insignia OPC buyers are generally experienced and responsible drivers who want to enjoy the full technical possibilities of their car."
