VIDEO: Scion Walks us Around the New FR-S Sports Coupe Concept Posted: 20 Apr 2011 06:48 PM PDT Toyota's North American subsidiary, Scion, surprised us today at the opening of the 2011 New York Auto Show with the world premiere of its new FR-S sports coupe concept. We say 'surprised' not because we weren't expecting a Scion-badged Toyota FT-86 to make its appearance in the Big Apple, but because of its refined design that made us forget about the FT-86 II concept we saw less than two months ago at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show. All-New 2012 Subaru Impreza Brings Smaller Engine with less Horsepower but Promises for 36 MPG Posted: 20 Apr 2011 03:52 PM PDT The New York auto show hosts the world premiere of the fourth generation Subaru Impreza, showcased in both 4-door and 5-door body styles. 2012 Jaguar XF Facelift Makes World Premiere at New York Auto Show Posted: 20 Apr 2011 03:29 PM PDT The new model year brings a refresh for Jaguar's XF and XFR sedans, which were both revealed in a world premiere today at the New York Auto Show. The British firm's BMW 5-Series rival receives restyled front and rear bodywork, along with some subtle changes inside and for certain markets including Europe, the introduction of a new four-cylinder turbo diesel engine. On the outside, Jaguar tried to bring the XF into line with the new XJ, though some may also see common themes with the original C-XF Concept, especially up front with the new and sleeker headlamp designs that incorporate LED daytime running lights arranged in a distinctive Jaguar 'J-Blade' signature. The 2012 XF benefits from revisions to the grille, hood, and front fenders, which incorporate new triangular side vents, while Jaguar also added larger tail lamps with full-LEDs for stop, tail light and turn signal functions. In addition, the trunk lid trim has been redesigned. The XFR's newly styled bumpers and alloy wheels complete the exterior makeover. Read more » |

Chevrolet Reveals 38-MPG 2013 Malibu ECO at New York Auto Show Posted: 20 Apr 2011 12:44 PM PDT Along with the standard version of the all-new 2013 Malibu, Chevrolet also introduced the ECO-flavored variant of its mid-size sedan at the New York Auto Show. The Malibu ECO returns a fuel consumption of 38 mpg (6.19 liters/km) on the highway and 26 mpg (9 liters/100 km) in the city, with Chevrolet boasting that it's the most fuel-efficient midsize sedan in the company's 100 year-long history. The new version features GM's eAssist "light electrification" technology, which is the company's way of saying it is a micro-hybrid car. The eAssist uses a lithium-ion battery and an electric motor-generator to enable regenerative braking electric assist and start-stop functionality. Read more » |
2011 NYIAS: New Scion FR-S Concept Brings Sexy Back to the FT-86 Posted: 20 Apr 2011 06:54 PM PDT The most hotly anticipated model of the New York Auto Show, Scion's version of the Toyota FT-86 sports coupe concept, finally made its world premiere today. The study is named FR-S, which stands for 'Front-Engine, Rear-wheel drive, Sport', though we prefer the definition given by Jack Hollis, Scion vice president, during the New York Show presentation. "FR-S stands for Front-engine… Rear-wheel drive… Sport. Pretty simple. I personally believe it should stand for Friggin' Really Sweet… but the legal department at Toyota was NOT feeling the same way," said Hollis. The first thing most readers will notice about the FR-S is the refined design compared to the latest concept version of the Toyota FT-86, shown in Geneva this past March. Though it's hard to pinpoint all the changes without having the cars side by side, the photos reveal a tweaked front end with revamped headlamps and a different bumper design without the aftermarket like add-on LED strips. Nissan Leaf NISMO RC: Purpose Built Track Racer Debuts at New York Auto Show [Updated Gallery] Posted: 20 Apr 2011 10:15 AM PDT There has been a lot of conversation lately about electric cars and racing, with some even talking about introducing the technology into the F1 stage. Nissan, on its part, has a lot to gain in terms of awareness given the brands focus on the development of dedicated electric vehicles like the Leaf. With this in mind, the Japanese carmaker developed a purpose-built prototype racer loosely based on the production Leaf that will receive its first public outing at the 2011 New York International Auto Show . Compared to the production model, the Lead NISMO RC (for Racing Competition), does away with the rear doors, rear seat, trunk, audio system, navigation, carpeting and other amenities, while gaining a mid-ship location for the battery pack, electric motor and inverter. 465 Horses Make the 2012 Grand Cherokee SRT8 the Fastest Jeep Ever Posted: 20 Apr 2011 09:43 AM PDT Jeep has given the SRT treatment to its flagship Grand Cherokee and the result is the creation of the firm's fastest and most potent production model ever. How does a 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) acceleration of 4.8 seconds or a quarter mile time in the mid-13 second range sound? This is what the Grand Cherokee SRT8 is capable of, and the reason for these figures lies under the SUV's bonnet. The Chrysler Group's Street and Racing Technology division (SRT for short) equipped the performance SUV with an all-new 6.4-liter HEMI V8 engine that delivers 465 horsepower and 465 lb-ft (630 Nm) of torque. Compared to the outgoing model powered by the 6.1-liter HEMI V8 unit, the new Grand Cherokee SRT8 has an extra 45HP and 45 lb-ft (61 Nm) of torque. About 90 percent of peak torque is available between 2,800 and 6,000 rpm. The Grand Cherokee SRT8 can do 0-100-0 mph in the mid-16 second range and has a top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h). 2012 Nissan Versa Sedan Unveiled, Priced from a Low $10,990 Posted: 20 Apr 2011 08:50 AM PDT It looks like our first reaction to link the Chinese market Nissan Sunny, revealed in December 2010, to the North American 2012 Versa, was spot on, as these photos clearly prove. Nissan's new entry in the affordable small sedan segment is a very awkward looking proposal (to say the least…), which probably stems from the fact the Versa / Sunny is based on the Micra's V-platform architecture, hence the odd proportions of the body. "The new Versa Sedan stands out as the only expensive looking car in the segment – with a lot of eye power," said Al Castignetti, vice president and general manager, Nissan Division, Nissan North America. "Its sculpted, dynamic proportions are modern without being gimmicky, projecting a much higher sense of design value than you might expect in a vehicle with a $10,990 starting M.S.R.P." Read more » |
Scion FR-S Concept: First Photos of U.S. Market Toyota FT-86 Leak Online Posted: 20 Apr 2011 08:00 AM PDT Anticipation is running so high for Scion's version of the Toyota FT-86 sports coupe that some couldn't wait for the official reveal of the FR-S later today at the New York Auto Show, and dropped the first pictures of the car onto the web. From what we can tell from these two photos, the Japanese automaker has changed the design again with the FR-S sporting a new front bumper that does away with the Geneva Show FT-86 II's aftermarket-like LED strips, while also featuring a different rear bumper and diffuser, as well as more pronounced rear fenders. The gaudy side vents are also gone while the study is equipped with different exterior mirrors. Read more » |
2012 Chrysler 300 SRT8 Brings the Thunder with 465HP 6.4-liter HEMI V8 Posted: 20 Apr 2011 07:41 AM PDT It's big, it's brash, it's powerful and it's attempting to take on the sport saloon segment. Yes, it's the all-new 2012 Chrysler 300 SRT8 and it was revealed today at the New York International Auto Show that runs for the public from April 22 to May 1. The flagship model of Chrysler's redesigned 300 series packs a more muscular 6.4-liter Hemi V8 pushing out an estimated 465-horsepower and 465 lb.-ft. of torque, up 40 horsepower and 45 lb.-ft. over the 6.1-liter mill it replaces. All that power is channeled to the rear wheels through a carried over five-speed automatic transmission with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. Chrysler's projected performance numbers include 0-60 mph (96 km/h) sprint time in the high 4-second range; quarter mile in high 12 second range; 0-100-0 mph (0-160km/h-0) in less than 16 seconds, top speed of 175 mph (281 km/h) and stopping power from 60-0 mph in 120 feet. Set to be unveiled at the New York Auto Show alongside the all-new Rio Sedan that we told you about in our previous post, the 2012 Soul comes with a number of technology and powertrain enhancements and some subtle design updates. The cosmetic differences on the outside are limited to the new projector headlamps with LED daytime running lights, a redesigned bonnet, restyled front and rear bumpers, plus the new LED tail lamps. Inside, Kia updated its audio offerings and added the new 'UVO' in-car hands-free communication and infotainment system. There's also a new Premium Package with heated front seats, leather seat trim, automatic climate control, and a navigation system. Read more » |
All-New 2012 Kia Rio Sedan for North America Breaks Cover Posted: 20 Apr 2011 05:51 AM PDT After rolling out the China market Kia K2 sedan at the 2011 Shanghai Auto Show on Tuesday, the South Korean automaker exposed the sub-compact sedan's North American sibling that will be sold under the Rio nameplate. Even though the K2 and Rio share the same underpinnings being the sedan versions of the all-new Rio hatchback, which was unwrapped in Geneva this past March, the two models get feature unique exterior designs. The North American Rio sedan keeps the hatchback model's front end styling with the large, almond-shaped headlights adding a new window line and a different rear end design. Same goes for the interior which is identical to the five-door model we saw in Geneva, sans the different trim and features. Read more » |
