Posted: 01 Sep 2011 08:35 PM PDT

The next chapter in the Porsche 911 saga, codenamed 991, is almost upon us as the sports coupe will make its first public outing at the Frankfurt Motor Show on September 13, with sales to start this month in Germany and from February 2012 in North America.

Porsche is marking the launch of its most recognized model with what it describes as a "multimedia firework extravaganza" and which means a push of TV spots, commercials, film clips and web specials, all designed to showcase the 911's identity.

We've already shown you the first web film and now we have two more including a new 30-second TV spot (albeit in German) that combines historical film material and new pictures, and which was created entirely in CGI technology.

Renault 4 Ever Concept: David Obendorfer’s Revival of a Childhood Impression

Posted: 01 Sep 2011 05:09 PM PDT

As previously reported, the Renault 4 Ever Design Competition is asking the world's up-and-coming designers to pen a modernised take on the brand's iconic Quatrelle hatchback.

Here's one design that really impressed us: Italian David Obendorfer's "Revival of a Childhood Impression". Like Fiat's Nuova 500, Obendorfer's Revival takes the classic lines of its inspiration and wraps them around modern underpinnings.

Frankfurt Show Preview: New Audi A2 Concept

Posted: 01 Sep 2011 04:01 PM PDT

These past few years, Audi and the German premium automakers in general, have set out to fill every possible niche consumers may or may not think they need, from luxurious superminis to wild supercars. And they are far from done.

At the upcoming 2011 Frankfurt auto show, Audi will lift the covers off a new pure-electric concept study that revives the name of long gone A2.

The original model was a small MPV built from 1999 to 2005 that was way ahead of its time in several ways, but what made it truly unique was that it was manufactured entirely out of aluminum.

It Came from a…Detroit Junkyard: 1968 Iso Fidia S4

Posted: 01 Sep 2011 03:04 PM PDT

Ask any classic car nut what's on his or her list of must-have Italian exotics, and chances are there'll be at least one Iso. The boutique automaker made several notable contributions to the world of motoring, among them the legendary Grifo and svelte Rivolta.

The company was also responsible for the Isetta bubble car and, sadly, the Fidia S4 sedan pictured here. Let's just say it wasn't one of the company's finer moments.

Built from 1967 to 1975, only 192 Fidia S4's were produced. Iso, which had not built a four-door before and would never build one again, describes the Fidia as, "the four fastest seats in the world".

Posted: 01 Sep 2011 02:03 PM PDT

Unless Ford is preparing an even bigger surpRiSe for us, the company's recent announcement on the unveiling of the "next performance Focus" at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show strongly suggests that we will see the final production version of the Focus ST in Germany.

But until then, Ford has unleashed yet another media campaign on the internet that marks the final (or at least we hope it's the final…) countdown for the release of the new Focus ST, which we saw in showcar form in Paris last year.

Video: Jet Skiing on the Roads of Oceanside New York

Posted: 01 Sep 2011 01:28 PM PDT

Stuck in a neighborhood with enormous volumes of water doesn't exactly sound like an ideal setting for entertainment, or at least that is what most people would like to believe.

Some folks, however, found a way to make the best of a really bad situation. Like this guy who took out his jet ski and had a blast on the empty (pun intended) roads of Oceanside, New York after the passing of Irene.

Click past the jump to watch him in action.

It’s Light, Jim, But Not as we Know it: BMW Looks Ahead with Laser Lighting Technology

Posted: 01 Sep 2011 09:33 AM PDT

Most car manufacturers have already adopted the use of LED (light-emitting diode) technology for the lights on their new models – at first for the rear and subsequently for the front daytime running lights. Premium carmakers are even offering full LED headlamps on some of their models, like BMW in its new 6-Series coupe and convertible.

But the Bavarian firm's engineers didn't put out the lights (pun intended) and head home after their latest achievement. Instead they started working on what they say is the next logical step in car light technology: laser.
