Dodge Unleashes Video of Viper SRT10 ACR Reclaiming Position from Lexus LFA at the 'Ring with 7:12.13

Posted: 27 Sep 2011 06:28 PM PDT

A couple of weeks ago, Dodge brought its street-legal, but now discontinued, 2010 Viper SRT10 ACR to the Nürburgring racetrack to set the record straight – literally.

In 2008, while the sports car was still in production, the Viper SRT10 ACR turned the 'Ring in 7:22.10, which at the time made it the fifth fastest production car in the world, according to the figures listed on Wikipedia.

Since then, however, many production vehicles posted better times including the Lexus LFA Nürburgring Edition with 7:14.64 on August 31, 2011, which placed it in fourth position behind the Radical SR8 LM (6:48), Radical SR8 (6:55) and the Gumpert Apollo Sport (7:11.57).

Polk Says 2011 Non-Dedicated Hybrid Model Sales Down 1.5% Versus 2010

Posted: 27 Sep 2011 05:30 PM PDT

With the notable exceptions of the Chevy Volt, Toyota Prius and Honda Insight, most of the hybrids on sale today are merely spin-offs of existing ICE models with gas / electric powertrains fitted; take the hybridized Chevy Tahoe, Toyota Camry and Honda Civic for instance.

According to automotive statistics website Polk online, in the first seven months of 2011, sales of non-dedicated hybrid models dipped 1.5% compared to last year. Analyst Tom Libby blames the sales slump on the lack of distinct styling; hybrid buyers want their cars to stand out from the crowd.

Posted: 27 Sep 2011 05:02 PM PDT

We'd hardly call it a reason to celebrated, but earlier this week, many cautiously welcomed Saudi King Abdullah's decision to grant women some rights by allowing them to vote and run in the next municipal elections that are scheduled (but not ensured) for 2015 as a positive move forward for a country that remains an absolute and puritanical monarchy.

Now, less than 48 hours after the King's announcement, a Jeddah court sentenced a Saudi woman to be lashed 10 times with a whip for disobeying the country's prohibition on women driving!

BMW's Quandt Family Admits Using 50,000 Slaves as Workers in WWII

Posted: 27 Sep 2011 03:52 PM PDT

A TV documentary titled "The Silence of the Quandt Family" that aired in Germany in 2007 has forced the Quandt family, which is a major shareholder in the BMW Group, to commission an independent study on their ancestors' actions during World War II.

But before we get into more details, let us note that the Quandt family acquired BMW 15 years after the end of the war in 1959, and the automaker is not involved in this particular issue nor was it implicated in the documentary.

The 1,200-page study carried out by historian Joachim Scholtyseck concluded that the patriarch of the family, Guenther Quandt, not only cooperated willingly with the Nazi regime, of which he became a member only a month after Adolf Hitler's rise to power, but also "employed" 50,000 slave workers in his factories that churned out machinery for the German army.

SCOOP: All-New 2014 BMW M3 Sedan Caught and it's Packing a Twin-Turbocharged Straight-Six

Posted: 27 Sep 2011 09:22 AM PDT

Our spy photographers have finally spotted the brand-new BMW M3 saloon more than a year before its introduction sometime in the first half of 2013. Those that are more interested in the two-door model will most likely have to wait, as the M3 Coupe is currently planned to follow later on.

There's still some debate whether BMW will shuffle up its nameplates, as some sources suggest that the next 1-Series coupe will be renamed to the 2-Series, and the 3-Series Coupe into the 4-Series, meaning the M3 Coupe could become known as the M4. However, none of this has been officially confirmed yet.

Ad Watch: Nissan's Redonkulous Frontier TV Spot

Posted: 27 Sep 2011 08:18 AM PDT

Most commercials should be taken with a pinch of salt, but sometimes advertisers outdo themselves in silliness. In Nissan's case, the Japanese automaker wanted to convey the message that the Frontier is a "mid-size truck that acts like a full size, giving the driver the feeling they can tackle any obstacle".

And how did Nissan's advertising agency deliver the message? With a Nissan Frontier intervening and saving the day when a passenger airplane's front landing gear jams…

Of course, there's the usual but barely noticeable "Fictionalization. Do not attempt" footnote on the right hand corner. You can watch the ad in the video after the break.
