IAA 2011: Audi Presents New A5 Coupe DTM Racer in the Flesh

Posted: 15 Sep 2011 03:31 PM PDT

Audi certainly has a rich history in the Deutche Tourenwagen Masters, the German touring car championship, more commonly known as the DTM. From the 1990 V8 quattro until today's A4, the four-ring brand has raced only four-door models.

This is about to change as Inglostandt's new contender in the DTM is based on the A5 Coupe. Making its debut at the Frankfurt Auto Show this week, Audi's 2012 racer was developed around three principles: maximum safety, 40% reduction of costs and an impressive bodywork design.

The Vanishing Tank: BAE Systems’ Adaptiv Technology Renders Vehicles Invisible to Infrared

Posted: 15 Sep 2011 03:02 PM PDT

One of the long-standing goals of science has been the perfection of invisibility. Now, with a new technology developed by BAE Systems called Adaptiv, we're one step closer to realising that goal.

Although aircrafts like the F-117 Nighthawk have used their unique design and low emission engines and subsystems to avoid radar and infrared detection, true "visual" invisibility has long eluded humanity.

Adaptiv builds on this by taking hexagonal plates called "pixels", each of which about the size of an anti-tank mine, and fastening to the exterior of a vehicle.

IAA 2011: Peugeot 508 RXH is an Environmentally-Conscious Crossover

Posted: 15 Sep 2011 12:43 PM PDT

The crossover recipe introduced by Audi's Allroad for those who fancy a bit of off-roading but find SUVs too flashy is quite simple: take a station-wagon model, and then add plastic body cladding and underside protection, rise the suspension height to increase road clearance and voilà: your new crossover model is ready.

The same recipe has been followed by many manufacturers, the most recent being Peugeot with its brand-new 508 RXH that was launched at the 64th International Auto Show in Frankfurt.

IAA 2011: New Polo R is VW’s WRC Weapon of Choice

Posted: 15 Sep 2011 12:24 PM PDT

Volkswagen has finally decided to enter the World Rally Championship. Its contender will be the factory-backed Polo R WRC, which was on display at the 64th International Auto Show in Frankfurt.

What drew VW to the WRC was the change of rules by FIA for the 2011 season and onwards, which demand 1.6-liter turbocharged engines with direct injection, in order to keep up with the downsizing trend in road-going cars and lessen the development costs for the teams, thus drawing more competitors to the series.

Ford to Launch New Mustang Customizer Website

Posted: 15 Sep 2011 10:43 AM PDT

With the possible exception of audio and more recently, infotainment systems, the Mustang has never really been on the forefront of technological breakthroughs.

It only just received 6-speed transmissions while up until early 2010, the base model was fitted with a 4.0-liter lump delivering an embarrassing 210HP. And let's not forget that it still features a solid rear axle, a throwback in today's era of independent setups.

But when it comes to marketing gimmicks, Ford always manages to stay in front of the crowd. Now, the Detroit automaker is getting ready to launch a nifty customizer website for the 2012 Mustang.

While Audi's executive officers were showcasing the Ingolstadt-based firm's latest conceptual and production models such as the S6, S7, S8 and the Urban studies, the company's engineers were hard at work trying out a prototype of the upcoming RS4 series in Avant form.

The wider front and rear tracks hiding under blistered wheel arches along with the massive brakes, large alloy wheels and the typical RS-style twin oval tail pipes leave no doubt that this is the upcoming RS4 Avant model.

You can check them out for yourself in the short video clip right after the jump.

IAA 2011: Opel Envisions an Affordable Urban Commuter with the RAK e Concept

Posted: 15 Sep 2011 07:33 AM PDT

Not to be outdone by its German counterparts, Opel displayed its vision for a low-cost urban commuter with the two-seater RAK e concept car. According to GM's German subsidiary, the study has "production potential".

The battery-operated vehicle with the exposed wheels is based on a steel space-frame structure beneath a skin of conventional synthetic material.

The reason why Opel avoided the use of exotic materials is to keep the RAK e as affordable as possible. Nevertheless, Opel managed to keep the weight down to just 380kg (837 lbs) or about 80kg (176 lbs) less than VW's NILS concept.
