Video: Was This a Dangerously Close Call or a Ballsy Move?

Posted: 02 Dec 2011 06:57 PM PST

A minor spat has broken out on Youtube over whether or not a Lotus Exige GT3 traveling close to 250km/h [155mph] should have passed in between a Mazda MX-5 and a Porsche Boxster during the Production Sports Cars CUE Enduro Series held at the Phillip Island circuit in Victoria, Australia.

If you watch the first video shot from an inboard camera on the MX-5, it looks like a rocket ship flew by inches away from the Japanese roadster. In fact, it all happens so fast that you have to actually pause the video to see the Exige GT3 driven by Barton Mawer.

According to the Philip Island Circuit's official website, the driver in the No66 MX-5 was Michael Hall. Here's what he said on Youtube:

"I'm chasing down a Porsche Boxster in the #66 Mazda MX5 whilst trying to hang onto the lead of Class E. Meanwhile Barton Mawer is trying to hunt down Alan Simonsen in the Lambo for the overall lead, and obviously not in the mood to waste any time."

Last MGB Roadster Ever Made Returns Back Home Through the Window

Posted: 02 Dec 2011 04:37 PM PST

The MGB Roadster was an open-top British sports car that was launched by MG in 1962 and was followed three years later by a 2+2 GT Coupe. It had a very long life span, surviving until 1980.

At the time, the company changed hands from the British Motor Corporation to British Motor Holdings and then to British Leyland Motor Corporation. The decay and eventually, the fall of the British car industry began during that period.

If Looks Could Kill: Meet the 1999 Subaru Impreza Casa Blanca Limited Edition

Posted: 02 Dec 2011 03:48 PM PST

Subaru is one of those automakers that will either bore you to death or irk you with the styling of its products, but scarcely, if ever, cause any excitement with its designs.

The Impreza series is a characteristic example going from boredom to controversial and vice versa not only with each new restyling, but sometimes even within the same generation.

Time to meet the Impreza Casa Blanca - a special edition version of the first generation Sport Wagon with the 1.5-liter boxer engine that was introduced in Japan in 1999 to address the craze consumers had for retro styled cars at the time.

And yes, you read that correctly: the Casa Blanca isn't a abomination creation from some unknown coachbuilder but an official Subaru product and it was produced from 1999 to 2000 in a limited run of 5,000 units!

GM May Redesign Volt's Battery, Puts Opel Ampera Sales on Hold

Posted: 02 Dec 2011 02:55 PM PST

Providing a free loaner to Volt owners concerned about their car's safety is all good and well – even better for some if the loaner is a Camaro or a Corvette.

However, General Motors, which is currently cooperating with the NHTSA to address the fire issues that ensued after the agency's crash tests, may even go as far as redesigning its extended-range hybrid's battery which is manufactured by South Korea's LG Chem.

Hyundai itself was not the target, as one would have thought upon hearing the news. Rather, the union members who held "Stop Sex Discrimination at Hyundai" and "Reinstate Ms. Park" banners were showing their support for Ms. Park.

Mid-Size Cars Sales Fall as U.S. Buyers Downsize to Smaller Cars

Posted: 02 Dec 2011 12:42 PM PST

For decades, mid-size sedans like the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord and Ford Taurus have been best-sellers and the most common sight on American roads.

But the trend is starting to change. According to J.D Power and associates, an increasingly large number of buyers are downsizing and choose small cars such as the Chevrolet Cruze or even the Honda Fit.

In fact, J.D. Power forecasts that, for the first time in two decades, compact cars will outsell mid-size models by the end of the year. Moreover, it projects that by 2015, compact and sub-compact cars will have a 20% share in the U.S. market, while mid-size models' share will shrink down to 14%.

BMW Releases Teaser Film on Mystery New X6 M Model, Could it be the Diesel?

Posted: 02 Dec 2011 11:42 AM PST

Those Bavarians are always coming up with something to grab our attention. Their latest mystery film is about a new edition or model of the X6 with the famed M logo.

The only official information we get from BMW is that the vehicle seen in the teaser clip will establish "a new category of automobiles" and that it represents "a new chapter powered by M".

The vehicle itself or rather certain parts of the crossover like the lights, hood and, of course, the moniker on the tailgate, are craftily blurred out.

Polish Video Awesomeness: BMW E30 Gymkhana Style

Posted: 02 Dec 2011 11:11 AM PST

Ken Block's Gymkhana? Sure, it's cool and all but for those of you that want to see something different and out of the PR-ordinary [...] for a change and one that does not include a Ford Fiesta for the umpteenth time, some chaps over from Poland have readied a pretty interesting video that you may want to watch.

For starters, it's more like a short film and an impressive one at that – though we could have done without the black filters.

Ferrari and Red Bull Quit F1 Teams Association over Rules Disagreement, FIA Announces 2012 Entry List

Posted: 02 Dec 2011 10:27 AM PST

Now we know what Ferrari CEO, Luca di Montezemolo's statements were all about when less than a month ago, he hinted at the Scuderia leaving Formula 1, something that the company had then denied claiming that its head honcho's words were misinterpreted.

Well, leaving the Formula One Teams Association (FOTA) is an action that is not really open to any sort of interpretations - especially when Ferrari itself issues a lengthy statement explaining why it is leaving the association that di Montezemolo himself was presiding over until 2009.

This Ain't No Kids Play: Traxxas X0-1 Toy Car goes 0-60mph in 2.3" and can Reach 100mph!

Posted: 02 Dec 2011 06:41 PM PST

In the word of the street, there are "toys" and there are "toys". Like the new Traxxas X0-1 radio controlled car which is one of those toys intended only for adults. And for a very good reason as this little devil comes with a top speed in excess of 100mph (160km/h) right out of the box!

Still not impressed? Then how about a zero to 60mph (96 km/h) sprint time of just 2.3 seconds and 0 to 100mph (160 km/h) in a mere 4.92 seconds in stock form? Traxxas says that it's the world's fastest ready-to-race radio controlled supercar and with these kinds of performance numbers, we have no reason to doubt its claim.

Marangoni's Range Rover Evoque HFI-R Puts on its Red Shoes

Posted: 02 Dec 2011 08:52 AM PST

In keeping with its tradition of showing up at the Bologna Motor Show with an impressive concept, Italian tire manufacturer Marangoni chose this year's edition of the venue to reveal the Range Rover Evoque HFI-R.

The first thing that catches your eye as you look at the pictures is the experimental ruby red coloured Marangoni tires – well, for many it will actually be the curvalicious brunette model but that's irrelevant to this story.

Marangoni says that the bespoke "M-Power EvoRed" tires are made from special compounds with high silica content that helps rolling resistance and consequently fuel consumption. The 255/30R20 tires are wrapped around a new set of 20-inch alloy wheels from O.Z. Racing.

In addition, the bodywork of the car has been completely repainted in a special satin paint called Titanium Fluid Metal while the roof, the pillars, the door handles and the grille are finished in gloss black.

Honda CEO Takes Personal Responsibility for Underwhelming U.S. Civic

Posted: 02 Dec 2011 08:02 AM PST

As you may already know, even though they share the same name, the European and North American Honda Civics are two very different cars.

This is good news for Honda's European arm, since the Frankfurt Motor Show-launched five-door hatch received a warm welcome, but bad news for their colleagues in North America who have faced a barrage of criticism.

2013 Jaguar XF Sportbrake Digitally Imagined

Posted: 02 Dec 2011 07:38 AM PST

Earlier this week, Jaguar's communication team published a pair of photos showing a prototype of the British firm's foray into the premium station wagon segment, the XF Sportbrake.

That was more than enough of an excuse for Ivan Martinovic from PS-Garage to grab his digital pen and theorize on the looks of the final production model that's slated to enter production next year.

Breaking Dawn: Camry and Prius Lead Toyota’s First Gain in the U.S. Since April

Posted: 02 Dec 2011 06:41 AM PST

Perhaps for the first time this year, Toyota has some good news to report. Japan's number one automaker has been hit the hardest by the March earthquake as it has the largest portion of domestic production of any other local manufacturer.

When it looked like it might recover, the Thai floods hit its supply chain once again. Moreover, the strong yen makes things even harder for Toyota. Yet in November, sales of Toyota Division in the U.S., which includes the Toyota, Lexus and Scion brands were up by 7 percent compared to the same month in 2010.

Sweet Wheels of Ebay Time: 1965 Buick Riviera with 59k Original Miles

Posted: 02 Dec 2011 06:18 AM PST

The first-generation of Buick's Riviera coupe series is considered by many to be a styling icon of the 1960s and one of the best creations made under the tenure of legendary GM head designer, Bill Mitchell, who had replaced Harley Earl in 1958.

General Motors launched the razor-sharp Riviera onto the market in late 1962 (as a 1963 model) to take on the wildly successful Ford Thunderbird, which it managed to compete but never surpass in sales.

As typical of the time, each year brought several design changes to the original body. This particular example found on eBay is from 1965, which was the last year for the first generation Riviera.

Nissan Juke-R Video No9: The Finishing Touches

Posted: 02 Dec 2011 05:20 AM PST

There's no question that Nissan is milking the hype surrounding the Juke R as much as it can. Up until now, the Japanese automaker has published nine videos (including the one you're about the watch after the break) on the building process while it also issued separate footage and a gallery on the finished product in between.

This week's footage is called "Finishing Touches" and as the name suggests, it shows the teams from Nissan Europe and its technical partner RML applying the last parts on the GT-R-powered Juke including the dashboard and centre console inside and a matt black paint scheme that's both vinyl-wrapped as well as painted on the outside.
