Family Duel: 2013MY Nissan GT-R Takes on its 2012MY and 2010MY GT-R Siblings [Video]

Posted: 22 Dec 2011 05:53 PM PST

There's no denying that since its introduction on the market in 2008, Nissan has made several enhancements to the GT-R to further improve its performance credentials.

Among other changes, the Japanese firm has upgraded the GT-R's sophisticated electronics, aerodynamics, chassis and of course, the 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine that started out with 480-horsepower and now, in its latest iteration, churns out 550 ponies.

To see what these improvements mean in practice, Japan's BestMotor TV brought three generations of the GT-R from 2012, 2011 and 2009 [marketed as the 2013MY, 2012MY and 2010MY respectively in North America], to the Twin Ring Motegi circuit for a 0 to 400m / quarter-mile duel as well as a three-lap race around the track

Video Quiz: Is this a Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Doing Donuts?

Posted: 22 Dec 2011 04:09 PM PST

Given its lofty price tag (around $1.7 million) and the fact that it's rarer than sober night at Charlie Sheen's house (only 300 examples of the coupe were made), it's not very often that we see a driver of a Bugatti Veyron 16.4 doing donuts on the street, which is why this video captured our interest today.

However, we're not 100 percent convinced that what we're seeing through this phone camera video (note to the mobile device owner: next time, please hold it the right way…) is indeed a Veyron, though it does look and sound like it is.

You can check out the short clip after the jump and tell us what you think.

Porsche Chief Driving Consultant Displays the Merits of the Cayman R

Posted: 22 Dec 2011 03:17 PM PST

These past few months, the big news coming out from Porsche's headquarters in Stuttgart concerned the brand-new 911. And that's only natural as it's not every day that we see a new 911 – and its most radical evolution at that.

On the other hand, the Boxster / Cayman duo is almost nowhere to be seen. That's also to be expected: their replacements are coming next year, so the current models are more or less old news.

However, Porsche would like to remind us that the Cayman is still alive and well with a new video staring Porsche UK's Chief Driving Consultant, Gordon Robertso.

Rumors: Kia Insiders Say GT RWD Sedan Could be Joined by Coupe and Sport Wagon

Posted: 22 Dec 2011 02:44 PM PST

Kia's ascent from an inexpensive maker of bland products to a company that aspires to compete with the heavy weights in the mainstream segments continues with the South Korean firm now planning to introduce its first-ever rear-wheel drive model based on the GT concept we saw at the Frankfurt Motor Show this past September.

But the sedan model, which is expected to make its appearance in production form as early as 2013, may not be alone if we are to believe a report from Edmunds' Insideline.

Citing company insiders, the report says that Kia is also considering adding an even sportier two-door coupe version as well as a more practical station wagon model to the range of the production GT.

Get Your Kicks on “Route 66” Super Bowl XLVI Chevy Ad – and Win $10,000 in the Process

Posted: 22 Dec 2011 02:11 PM PST

The NFL Super Bowl game is the most watched American TV broadcast of the year: in 2011, some 111 million viewers watched the Green Bay Packers beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 31 to 25. It broke the record held by the 2010 game, which itself had shattered the 28-year old record held by the final episode of M*A*S*H.

It's no wonder then that companies not only pay huge amounts of money to place their ads, but also want those ads to make an impression on the biggest TV audience in the U.S.

Posted: 22 Dec 2011 01:10 PM PST

Despite being the world's biggest car market, China ranks third in the luxury segment, trailing both the U.S. and Germany. Analysts, however, predict that this is about to change soon; in fact, it could even happen at the end of 2011.

According to a report from Bloomberg, Jenny Gu, an analyst at research company LMC Automotive, estimated that the number of luxury cars sold in China in 2011 may reach 939,000 units, surpassing Germany's estimate of 914,000 sales.

Hyundai Canada Pitches a Scented Veloster for Christmas Trees

Posted: 22 Dec 2011 12:40 PM PST

A lot of advertisers try to capitalize on the Christmas season to draw our attention on their clients' products, but few actually manage to succeed. One of the efforts that did manage to grab our attention this season comes from Hyundai Canada.

Instead of a tree-shaped air freshener for cars, Hyundai Canada and its advertising agency Innocean Canada came up with a novel idea of sending customers a Veloster shaped freshener for their Christmas trees. A simple yet effective idea.

What Would You do with a Ferrari 550 Maranello V12 Engine?

Posted: 22 Dec 2011 12:05 PM PST

We've already established that buying a used exotic sports car can turn out to be a bottomless money pit.

But for the sake of conversation, let's say that you had the opportunity to buy a supercar's engine alone, like this 5.5-liter V12 from a 1999 Ferrari 550 Maranello coupe that we discovered on eBay with 9,000 miles and a 'Buy it Now' price of $16,999; what would you do with it?

If it the engine turned out to be in good condition, would you try to fitting it in another Ferrari or would you attempt a crazy engine swap in the likes of the F360-powered 1960 Nash Rambler Wagon or the Lamborghini-powered Ford Mustang, and if so, which donor car would you prefer?

Then again, maybe you'd like to create one of the world's most expensive coffee tables. Whatever your choice, we'd like to hear about it in our comments section after the break.

Transport Secretary LaHood Does Not Support NTSB Campaign for Hands-Free Calls Ban

Posted: 22 Dec 2011 11:25 AM PST

Texting while driving is certainly not a very clever move – that's why it's been banned in 35 states in America already. Speaking on a handheld cellphone ranks a close second, since it distracts the driver and makes steering the vehicle more difficult.

Transport Secretary Ray LaHood is campaigning against distracted driving – and in that he has the support of car manufacturers, too. On the other hand, NTSB, a safety board, wants to ban all cell phone use while driving, including those made using hands-free devices.

Опа! Another Driver gets Really Lucky in Snow Covered Road

Posted: 22 Dec 2011 10:43 AM PST

Thanks to the number of drivers who have fitted their cars with dashboard mounted cameras, we have the opportunity to see how fortunate some of them are in potentially life-threatening situations on the road.

This video reportedly takes us to Russia and a snow and ice covered road. The driver of the car was going his way when a large truck steered towards an exit.

Due to the conditions of the road, the motorist with the dash camera-equipped vehicle didn't have enough time or space to slow down, but luckily, he was able to avoid both the truck and the oncoming cars on the other side of the road. You can watch the clip for yourself right after the jump.

Utah Man Wins Lamborghini Murcielago in Contest, Crashes it 6 Hours Later [Videos]

Posted: 22 Dec 2011 09:12 AM PST

There are many reasons why only rich people buy supercars: it's not just the price but the cost of living with, or repairing, one. It's a risk any second-hand car buyer is taking, as our earlier story about a HUGE Ferrari F355 engine repair bill proves.

On the other hand, if someone actually offered you a supercar, let's say a Lamborghini, for free would you actually turn it down? Of course not; you'd just grab the keys, buckle up in the driver's seat and fire up the engine.

Well, that's exactly what happened to David Dopp, a 34-year old truck driver living in Santaquin, a town of 9,000 residents near Salt Lake City, Utah. He won a US$358,000 Lamborghini Murcielago Roadster in a "Joe Schmo to Lambo" contest that was sponsored by Maverik convenience stores.

Hyundai America Nabs BMW Designer Christopher Chapman

Posted: 22 Dec 2011 08:48 AM PST

If there's one thing that Hyundai and Kia can lay claim to, is that both companies eventually understood the importance of design and made significant efforts to improve the styling of their vehicles in the past few years.

To achieve their goal, the Koreans didn't hesitate to bring in experienced designers from other brands, with the most notable transfer being that of Peter Schreyer from Audi who took over and revolutionized Kia's design language.

The South Korean group continues to inject its brands with foreign designers, with its latest hire being Christopher Chapman of former BMW fame. Chapman was named chief designer of the Hyundai Design Center in Irvine, California, and will be responsible for new vehicle and concept design for Hyundai.

Toyota Forecasts 24% Rise in 2012 Production, Wants to Reclaim First Place in Global Sales

Posted: 22 Dec 2011 08:04 AM PST

The many disruptions in production following the March earthquake in Japan and October's Thai floods seriously hurt Toyota's profitability and production capability. Total sales for 2011 (excluding Daihatsu and Hino) are expected to reach 7.05 million units, which puts Toyota in third place overall behind General Motors and VW.

Japan's number one car manufacturer, though, is readying a comeback to reclaim the throne it held since 2008 as soon as possible – which means, next year.

All those months that the Saab saga was unfolding before our eyes, the Swedish carmaker's North American operations were excluded from any deal or restructuring plan.

Now the parent company is seemingly closing shop after Monday's filing for bankruptcy and the appointment of two receivers who, unless something dramatic occurs, will oversee the company's liquidation.

Saab Cars North America wants to avoid being declared bankrupt or liquidated. Therefore its Chief Operating Officer, Tim Colbeck, announced on Wednesday, December 21, that the company has appointed McTevia & Accociates, a specialist in corporate turnarounds, as an outside administrator.

The affected 2010 and 2011 model year Cadillac SRX vehicles were built from October 26, 2008, through June 23, 2011.
