| New Volkswagen Electric Car Concept and Jetta Hybrid Headed to Detroit Show Posted: 13 Dec 2011 06:45 PM PST  While a little late to the party, the Volkswagen Group plans to make up for its lackluster presence in the electric and hybrid vehicle sector with a barrage of eco-friendly models within the next couple of years. At the upcoming 2012 Detroit Auto Show, the VW brand will lift the covers off a never before seen pure electric concept car and the production version of the Jetta Hybrid, according to the Detroit Free Press. Well, here you go. This Lamborghini Murcielago was evidently inspired from the movie Tron with the owner placing as many LEDs as possible, from the windshield surround to the doors, and from the engine vents behind the passenger compartment to under the rear diffuser. The advert takes us on a quick journey through history showing us numerous "big things" that eventually went extinct, from dinosaurs to 1940s swimsuits and from 1970s sideburns to 1990s lexicons. | Volvo Launches new V60 D6 Plug-In Diesel-Electric Hybrid in Europe Posted: 13 Dec 2011 12:53 PM PST  Following the presentation of the new V60 D6 Plug-in Hybrid at the Geneva Motor Show this past March, Volvo has released more information as well as pricing in certain countries including Britain where it will be available for order from the beginning of 2012, with first deliveries expected in November. In the UK, the European market-only V60 D6 Plug-in Hybrid will cost between £45,000 and £50,000, not including the "Plug-in Car Grant" government subsidy. Read more »

| Supplier Issue Forces GM to Halt Chevy Cruze Production in Ohio Posted: 13 Dec 2011 11:36 AM PST  While models like the Corvette or the Camaro usually make the headlines with their performance numbers, looks or Nürburgring lap times, "bread and butter" models that sell in high volumes are those that matter the most to companies like General Motors. The Cruze, which has sold more than a million units less than two years after its global launch and is currently the second-best-selling small car in the U.S. trailing the Toyota Corolla by 4,000 units, is a prime example. That's why halting production on Monday at GM's Lordstown, Ohio plant where the Cruze is manufactured, must have been quite a blow for the Detroit company. Read more »

| Chrysler Reopens Conner Plant to Produce All-New 2013 SRT Viper, Sales Start Next Year Posted: 13 Dec 2011 10:51 AM PST  It was July 2, 2010, when the last Dodge Viper SRT10 rolled off the assembly lines of the Chrysler Group's Conner Avenue Assembly Plant in Detroit. The end of production also meant that the facility was idled for the last 17 months. But that's about to change as today, Chrysler announced that it will reopen the Conner plant for the production of the next generation SRT Viper, which will be unwrapped at the 2012 New York Auto Show in April before it goes on sale later in the year. | GM Confirms Turbo Engine for the New Malibu, Could be for the RS or SS Model Posted: 13 Dec 2011 10:26 AM PST  At a press event for the introduction of the new 2013 Malibu on Monday, General Motors confirmed the presentation of a turbocharged model to Motor Trend magazine. Chevrolet officials said that the force-fed variant of the Malibu would be introduced in about a year's time from now, without elaborating further on the specifications of engine or the model trim. | Show Me the Money: Saab Receives $5 Million US from Youngman, More May Come Posted: 13 Dec 2011 09:44 AM PST  It's true that this month is probably the worst in a really bad year for Saab. Its 9-5 ended last in Consumer Reports' luxury sedan test, GM repeatedly vetoed any sale deal involving the Chinese, and the court-appointed administrator has asked for the restructuring process to be terminated. Today, though, a ray of light shined in Trollhättan as Saab received a first payment from China's Youngman Lotus Automobile, ahead of the court meeting that will decide its future next week. | New Acura ILX will Likely Replace the TSX, gets 2.0L, 2.4L and Hybrid Powerplants Posted: 13 Dec 2011 09:19 AM PST  Honda is planning a major overhaul for its Acura brand, which hasn't been performing well lately. Total U.S. sales for Acura in November were 9,909 units, down 11.2 percent, while year-to-date sales totaled 110,170 vehicles, a 7.1 percent drop from the same period last year. At a recent media briefing in Las Vegas, Acura told reporters that with the exception of the next generation of the NSX, which will be shown in concept form at the Detroit auto show, the company will focus on offering "mid-level premium vehicles that favor fuel economy over performance".
On its article about the 2013 RL, Car&Driver reported that Honda wants to reduce its sedan lineup to three models, which means that one of the TL or TSX may eventually receive the axe. Read more »

| Woman gets Trapped in a Kia Rio Swallowed by a Sinkhole in New Hampshire Posted: 13 Dec 2011 08:36 AM PST  It's a pretty scary situation if you think about it; while you're driving in the middle of a city street, the road suddenly opens and swallows up your car leaving you trapped inside with water pumping out from the ground around you. But that's what happened to a woman in a Kio Rio sedan when she approached the intersection at Beech and North Streets in Manchester's North End just after 6 a.m. on Monday. What looked like a puddle turned out to be a sinkhole that trapped her car. Read more »

| Acura to Introduce New RL Sedan at the 2012 New York Auto Show Posted: 13 Dec 2011 08:38 AM PST  [2012 Acura RL pictured above] Next month's Detroit Motor Show will see Acura presenting a concept model for a replacement of the much-missed NSX sports car, as well as the new ILX compact sedan and the facelifted 2013 RDX crossover, but that's not all Honda's premium brand has in store for us in 2012. | Lights Out for Ford's U.S. Market Ranger as Production Comes to an End Posted: 13 Dec 2011 07:10 AM PST  After a career spanning close to three decades with more than 6.6 million sales, Ford has decided to cease production of its Ranger light-pickup truck on December 19 and close its 86-year old Twin Cities Assembly Plant in Minnesota. With the demise of the Ranger, Ford is leaving the light-truck segment, which it has led for no less than 18 years. Read more »

| Suzuki Introduces New Kizashi Sedan to the UK, Plans to Sell 500 Cars in 2012 Posted: 13 Dec 2011 06:41 AM PST  The Kizashi sedan hasn't exactly been a runaway success for the Japanese company, but Suzuki is still trying to expand its reach by entering new markets. Today, Suzuki added Britain to the list of countries that the Kizashi will be soon available. The mid-size sedan will go on sale in the UK next month with a single petrol engine and pricing set from £21,995. The absence of a crucial diesel option limits Suzuki's hopes for any substantial sale numbers, with the company planning to bring only 500 cars to Britain in 2012. Read more »

| VW Brand's Global Sales Reach 4.69 Million Units from January to November, Up 12.4% Posted: 13 Dec 2011 06:08 AM PST  It's been a good year for the Volkswagen brand with the German automaker reporting global sales of 4.69 million passenger cars from January to November 2011, a 12.4 percent increase over the same prior-year period (4.18 million).
For the month of November, the VW brand saw its passenger car sales grow 14.5 percent to 452,900 vehicles. Read more »

| New Suzuki Swift Sport with 136HP Priced from £13,500 in the UK Posted: 13 Dec 2011 05:37 AM PST  The performance flagship of the new Suzuki Swift model range will go on sale in the UK in January of 2012 with a starting price of £13,500, the Japanese automaker announced today. The 2012 Swift Sport comes equipped with a new Euro 5 1.6-liter VVT petrol engine that delivers 136HP and a maximum torque of 160Nm (118 lb-ft) at 4,000 rpm, with a newly designed 6-speed manual transmission driving the front wheels.
