We've been telling you for some time about Mercedes-Benz's plans to update its G-Class series and present a new pair of AMG models, and now our scoop photographers have snared two barely camouflaged prototypes on test in mainland Europe.

The two new AMG-prepped G-Wagen models are the G63 (or G55) and G65. It is to our understanding that the G63 AMG (keep in mind, Mercedes may hold on to the G55 nameplate for this model) will receive the German firm's new 5.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 producing around 525HP and 700Nm (516.3 lb-ft).

The more exclusive G65 AMG, which will be produced in a limited run, is speculated to get the S65 AMG's 6.0-litre bi-turbocharged V12 engine with an output of 612HP and a tarmac shredding 1,000Nm or 737 lb-ft of peak torque.

Posted: 27 Dec 2011 02:22 PM PST

For various reasons, it's not uncommon for drivers to run their cars on empty before filling up at a gas station - which isn't usually a problem if the fuel gauge reading is accurate.

However, for a number of owners of the short-lived Infiniti M45 sedan from the 2003 and 2004 model years, waiting for the low fuel warning light to go up before visiting a service station, can prove to be troublesome.

We Didn’t Start the Fire: Nissan Says its Leaf EV Proved its Safety Credentials During Tsunami

Posted: 27 Dec 2011 12:31 PM PST

The much-talked about Chevy Volt safety probe on the issue of its lithium-ion batteries and the recent announcement that 50 of the Fisker Karmas already delivered may face a similar short circuit problem, has led to much skepticism and debate about whether electric cars are safe enough in the event of an accident.

There are always two sides to the coin though and Nissan is currently making hay out of its rival's problems.

After the March tsunami that devastated Japan and its manufacturers, about two dozen Leaf EVs were destroyed. According to Nissan, none of the cars caught fire and their battery packs remained intact thanks to the airtight exosleketon, plus an additional two layers of protection that surround them.

U SPY: Is this a Prototype for the Ferrari Enzo's Replacement?

Posted: 27 Dec 2011 06:44 PM PST

During a recent trip to Maranello to visit the Ferrari Museum, Carscoop reader Edward Chew along with a close friend spotted this heavily camouflaged Ferrari prototype (or test mule) doing the rounds on the Italian firm's Fiorano test track.

Edward tells us that he and his friend were not sure what kind of model might be hiding behind all that cladding.

If you take a closer look at the prototype in the scoop pictures, you'll see that it has an extremely low bonnet and air outlets located at the rear end of the car, which can only mean that this is a mid-engine Ferrari model.

Now, we only know of one new mid-engined supercar that Ferrari has officially confirmed, and that's the Enzo's successor.

BMW and Mercedes Fight ‘Till the End for Number One Spot in U.S. Sales

Posted: 27 Dec 2011 10:10 AM PST

Lexus' 2011 fall from grace after a decade was only natural to result in its two main competitors, BMW and Mercedes-Benz, to battle it out for the first place in the premium car segment sales in the States.

Even though there is less than a week left until the year comes to an end, the outcome of this battle is still undecided: despite Mercedes having outsold BMW in October, heading in December, BMW sold 221,073 units in the U.S. market, 1,582 more than Mercedes-Benz.

Lady Owner of BMW 5-Series Drives Off with Gas Pump Still Attached on Her Car

Posted: 27 Dec 2011 09:10 AM PST

To most people, forgetting is a human weakness to be overcome, but it's one thing to not be able to remember where your car keys are and another to forget the gas pump connected to your vehicle as the consequences can be deadly.

In all fairness, we can't say for sure if the women driver of this BMW 5-Series saloon was responsible as the dashboard camera footage from a following vehicle shows a couple of gas station employees –perhaps one of them filled up the car and she went inside to pay.

In any case, she can consider herself lucky that the only damage was to her car and the gas pump. Video follows after the jump.

Report: Saab's U.S. Dealers Forced to Make Some Difficult Decisions

Posted: 27 Dec 2011 08:47 AM PST

When a carmaker goes down, it's not just the investors, factory workers or suppliers that take the heat: dealers are also in deep trouble. Case at hand: Saab's bankruptcy. Its owner, Swedish Automobile, was forced to liquidate the company after a long struggle to keep it afloat failed.

Saab Cars North America, on the other hand, was left out in the cold during this whole process. Even if the restructuring was successful, there was no provision (at least none that we know of) for the brand's North American operations.
