Patent Scoop: Is Toyota Readying Sports Version of the iQ?

Posted: 07 Dec 2011 06:22 PM PST

During the world premiere of the new Toyota 86 sports coupe at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show, the firm's global President Akio Toyoda made it crystal clear that his company is committed to produce more 'fun-to-drive' cars in the near future.

But don't take it from us, read what Toyoda said:

"Today it is said that young people have little interest in cars as there are much more interesting things. As an automobile maker, I find this quite frustrating. It is for this reason that we are committed to making cars that will evoke this feeling of 'fun to drive, again' in as many people as possible. This is Toyota's declaration."

While the 86 is the only real sports car in Toyota's current range, we would like to think that Toyoda wouldn't make such a statement without standing behind it, which is why we found these official patent images of a sported up iQ (sold as a Scion in North America) very interesting.

Mythbuster: Are Modern Truck and Car Emissions Comparable to that of Lawn Blowers? [Video]

Posted: 07 Dec 2011 04:40 PM PST

With government agencies enforcing stricter emission regulations every year and auto manufacturers doing their best to prove that their cars are as eco-friendly as possible, hyperbole is part of the game.

A common saying is that the modern cars are cleaner than lawn equipment and that the carbon dioxide emissions they release are actually lower than that present in the air that comes into the combustion chamber.

Edmund's Insideline decided to put the theories to the test. Since cars come in all shapes and sizes, they chose two examples from the opposite side of the spectrum: a Fiat 500 mini and a Ford F-150 SVT Raptor Crew Cab pickup.

The diminutive Fiat is powered by a 1.4-liter four with 100HP, while the big and menacing-looking Raptor sports a 411HP 6.2-liter V8.

Ford Mustang GT Does Not Have Wings, Plunges from the Third Story of Swiss Parking Garage

Posted: 07 Dec 2011 04:40 PM PST

An unnamed 24-year old driver of a new Ford Mustang 5.0 GT from Switzerland turned a humdrum parking job into a life-threatening situation when he went through the concrete wall of the third story of a parking garage in the Swiss city of Lugano on Monday.

The car fell from a height of around 15 meters (approx. 50 feet) before it came crashing down to the ground on some protective metal bars and a small tree.

Miraculously, the young man suffered only minor bruises and abrasions from the plunge and was released from the hospital he had been taken in.

Rumors: Toyota Readying a Supercharged Version of the GT 86?

Posted: 07 Dec 2011 02:47 PM PST

Toyota has repeatedly stressed that the GT 86 was developed as a pure, fun and easy to drive rear-wheel drive sports car, ignoring the horsepower race and concentrating instead on honing every detail of the chassis set-up.

In fact, the Japanese carmaker was so determined to stay true to its promise that it even included drift tests in its development program. The production model is said to have an estimated 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) time of 6.8 seconds and a top speed of 230 km/h (143 mph).

Marchionne Says 2013 Dodge Dart will be Certified at 40mpg, will get 9-Speed Auto

Posted: 07 Dec 2011 01:54 PM PST

The Chrysler Group gave us our first taste of its sporty looking all-new 2013 Dodge Dart compact sedan on Tuesday with the release of a teaser photo gallery and the initial data on the car's specifications.

The Dart may prove to be one of the most important models in Dodge's recent history not only because it is the first Chrysler product to be based upon a Fiat architecture and in particular, the Alfa Romeo Giulietta, but also because CEO Sergio Marchionne told Reuters that he believes its fuel efficiency will be certified at "40 mpg or more by the end of the month".

The reason why that matters is that, under the deal made with the U.S. government to allow Chrysler to emerge from bankruptcy protection in 2009, the Italian company will receive the final 5 percent of stock if it develops a Fiat-based car that will be built in the U.S. and can get at least 40 miles per gallon.

Posted: 07 Dec 2011 01:08 PM PST

Last month, General Motors posted a third-quarter profit of $1.7 billion US. Not bad for a company that, only just two years ago, was almost bankrupt and was saved thanks to a massive government bailout.

Yet its aim is to reduce costs and increase profits even more. GM representative Jay Cooney told the Detroit News: "GM is continually seeking ways to improve our operating performance and reduce complexity to deliver a world-class cost structure and profit margins."

NSFW: Gisele Spends Some Time in a Cadillac CTS-V Coupe [Parts 1 & 2]

Posted: 07 Dec 2011 01:11 PM PST

The first thing most of our readers [sic…] may notice about this video is that the featured Cadillac CTS-V Coupe is equipped with an automatic transmission. Do we really need to tell you what else your eyes will rest upon after that?

And oh, it's probably a good idea to tell you that both videos are somewhat NSFW (probable less about Work, more about Wife). If staged clips about girls taking a ride in a fast car is your kind of thing, all you have to do is follow the jump to watch Gisele and her ride in the automatic Caddy.

Rinspeed Shows “Dock+Go” EV Extending Range Add-On Concept Ahead of the Geneva Salon

Posted: 07 Dec 2011 11:31 AM PST

Rinspeed is a Swiss-based automobile manufacturer and tuning designer with a very vivid imagination. Although it produces "normal" tuning products like the 600HP Porsche 911 Turbo, it is projects like the James Bond-like submersible Lotus Elise or the BamBoo EV study that are its hallmark.

Now, the innovative design house is planning to launch a new "mobility concept" at the 2012 Geneva Salon next March. The "Dock+Go" is the brainchild of Frank M. Rinderknecht, who describes it as a docking "backpack on wheels".

The idea behind its creation was born out of most electric vehicles' problem: their restricted range. Although any EV can serve as a basis, Rinspeed chose the electric Smart ForTwo for displaying its solution.

This is What Happens when You Get Cocky with a BMW X3 at the Beach [Video]

Posted: 07 Dec 2011 11:44 AM PST

Would you believe us if we told you that the BMW X3 SUV and the sea don't mix? Well, actually, some people need to find that out the hard way.

The owner of a murdered-out, first generation BMW X3 mistook the Bavarian model for a Lada Niva true-blue 4x4 and attempted some show and tell at the beach (possibly somewhere in Poland) by driving the crossover down to the water to pick up his other toy, a jet ski on a trailer.

As you can imagine, things didn't quite work out the way he planned… But at least he and his buddies had some good laughs and at the end, he was able to pull out the bimmer from the sand and the sea with the help of a winch. You can watch the videos for yourself right after the jump.
