Posted: 28 Dec 2011 06:38 PM PST

At the Auto China motorshow in 2010, Mercedes-Benz previewed the design language of the current, second-generation CLS sports saloon with the Shooting Brake concept car, which generally received positive reviews.

It didn't take long for the premium carmaker to announce its intention to expand the range of the CLS series with a second body style based on that study, while the company even confirmed that the Shooting Brake model would arrive in dealerships during 2012.

Over the months that followed, we saw several scoops of the CLS Shooting Brake, and now our spy shooters travelled all the way to northern Sweden to film the sleek five-door model during winter testing.

Lancia Imperiale Design Concept by David Cardoso

Posted: 28 Dec 2011 03:34 PM PST

If there's one European brand that has been in an identity crisis for many years, that is Lancia – and the Fiat Group's decision to drop a few Chrysler models including the 300 sedan and the Town & Country minivan into the Italian firm's range only made things worse.

One time the proud maker of sporty models with a pinch of luxury like the gorgeous Lancia Flavia Coupe with its innovative narrow-angle V4 engine and let's not forget, also the holder of 10 world rally championships, Lancia is now struggling to find its place in today's automotive world.

Japanese Gas Stations Begin to Offer EV Charging Services

Posted: 28 Dec 2011 02:48 PM PST

With internal combustion-engined cars, whether they use gasoline or diesel, things are pretty simple: when you're low on fuel, you just drive up to a gas station and voila; fill up your car and continue your trip.

Electric vehicles are a different matter, though, and the ideal solution would be an EV-equivalent of the gas station.

And now, four Japanese oil wholesalers including Cosmo Oil, Idemitsu Kosan, JC Nippon Oil and Showa Shell Sekiyu KK, announced that they will do just that: they will install 27 charging stations in select gas stations between Tokyo and Kanagawa in the first three months of 2012.

Chevy Volt and Fiat 500 Amongst Worst Product Flops of 2011, Says Report

Posted: 28 Dec 2011 03:57 PM PST

A report on the seven worst product flops in the U.S. from 24/7 Wall Street that was re-posted on Yahoo Finance includes two vehicle introductions, the Chevrolet Volt and the Fiat 500.

According to the author of the report, Chevrolet's extended range electric vehicle made it on the list because it underperformed in sales while the fact that it is under investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for fires related to the car's lithium-ion batteries is also mentioned.

As for the 500, the article says that while the Italians expected to sell some 50,000 cars during its first year in the States, Fiat sold fewer than 12,000 from January through July, and that the company ousted its chief Laura Soave this past November. For the record, Fiat sold 15,826 examples of the coupe and the 500C through October.

Great Balls of Fire: Racing Driver Wins Rally even though his Lamborghini was Burning up

Posted: 28 Dec 2011 01:11 PM PST

Most people, even professional drivers, would probably pull aside on the road if their vehicle caught on fire, but not racing car driver Jason White and his navigator John White.

In the middle of the Targa High Country 2011 race, which took place at Mt Buller in Australia during the first weekend of November, the dynamic duo noticed that the rear-end of their brand-new $600,000 Lamborghini Gallardo Super Trofeo Stradale was up in flames.

But instead of calling it a day, the Tasmanians decided to continue the race – and guess what; despite the fact that their Lambo was slowly roasting, they actually managed to win the race!

Government Lets Tax Breaks Expire Just when EVs and Plug-in Hybrids Are Increasing in Numbers

Posted: 28 Dec 2011 12:32 PM PST

The U.S. government has pushed automakers hard on the issue of reducing their fleets average fuel consumption and CO2 emissions – and even though it made some concessions, it eventually won their support.

What's surprising is the fact that during a time that many plug-in hybrid or pure electrical vehicles are ready to enter the North American market, the government has decided to let the tax credit for installing home as well as commercial charging equipment expire on Sunday, January 1, 2012.

De Tomaso Mangusta Legacy Design Study Inspired by the 1965 Original

Posted: 28 Dec 2011 10:35 AM PST

The revival of the De Tomaso brand at this year's Geneva Salon with the Deauville showcar inspired design graduate and digital artist Maxime de Keiser to craft a modern interpretation of the original Mangusta from the late 1960s (De Tomaso had revived the name with the production version of the Bigua concept in the early 2000s).

Introduced in 1967, the first Mangusta was designed by the famed Giorgetto Giugiaro, who at the time worked for Turin-based coachbuilder Ghia, and was offered with a choice of Ford-sourced V8 engines. It was replaced by the cheaper to produce Pantera in 1971.

Mercedes-Benz Releases New Video Footage of 2012 SLK 55 AMG

Posted: 28 Dec 2011 10:06 AM PST

After the recent track footage of the C 63 AMG Coupé Black Series being thrown around the corners of the Laguna Seca circuit in California, Mercedes-Benz's AMG division released a new video of another product it launched this year, the 2012 SLK 55 AMG.

Unfortunately, the clip was filmed on public roads so it's far more politically correct (…if you get our drift) than what you'd expect from a rear-wheel drive sports car like the new SLK 55 AMG that boasts a 5.5-liter V8 engine with 422HP and 540 Nm.

Nevertheless, feel free to check it out for yourself in the video that follows after the break.

Posted: 28 Dec 2011 09:32 AM PST

More often than not, a model's sales numbers cool down as it approaches the end of its career, but that's not the case with the Ford Fusion that has seen its numbers rise steadily since its introduction in 2006, with 2011 set to mark its best-selling year with close to 240,000 units (according to Ford's preliminary estimates).

Ford says that since its first full year of sales in 2006 through 2010, the Fusion increased its share in the midsize segment by 5.2 percentage points, with sales rising from 142,502 units and a 6.7 percent of segment share in 2006 to 219,219 for an 11.9 percent share in 2010.

In this world, there are dangerous criminals and there are foolish criminals. And if there was ever a more miserable failure of a gas station robber than this guy, we have yet to see one with our own eyes.

But he did manage to enter the station and run out with a case of beers/drinks in less than 30 seconds, so we'll give him that at least. For the rest, check out the video that follows below.

Craftsman to Debut Cadillac of Lawn Tractors at Detroit Motor Show, Lutz Not Liking the Idea

Posted: 28 Dec 2011 08:24 AM PST

Sure it has four wheels and runs on gasoline while also featuring some fancy amenities like cup-holders and power steering, but fact is the new Craftsman CTX lawn tractor series ain't the type of motorized vehicle you expect to see at an event like the 2012 North American International Auto Show [NAIAS] in Detroit.

Nevertheless, Sears Holdings Corp's Craftsman division has somehow convinced the organizers of the Detroit motor show to give them their own booth to debut the new CTX, which is the brand's premium line of lawn tractors with prices ranging from US$3,000 to US$6,500 (~€2,300 to €4,980).

All-Electric ZUGO Design Concept is Priceless

Posted: 28 Dec 2011 07:38 AM PST

Some design concepts are meant to be taken seriously whereas others, not so much. You only have to take a quick look at the opening photo above to see in which of the two categories the 2020 ZUGO design study falls into.

The ZUGO is the creation of Milos Paripov who has an M.A. in Digital Arts/Media Arts (Mediengestaltung/Digitale Kunst) from the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, Austria.

Inspired by the original Yugo 45, Paripov designed the ZUGO as a low-cost, all-electric sub-compact hatchback to participate in the 2011 edition of the Auro(r) automotive design conference, held in Zagreb, Croatia, earlier this year.

Senner Tuning Extracts Some More Power from Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG

Posted: 28 Dec 2011 06:08 AM PST

Not all German tuning firms are obsessed with insane power numbers and questionable cosmetic makeovers, as Senner Tuning's new package for the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Gullwing sports car shows.

The Ingelheim am Rhein-based tuner starts with the SLS AMG's 6.2-liter V8 engine, which normally produces an output of 571-horsepower and a peak torque of 650Nm (479 lb-ft). A revised ECU along with a stainless steel sports exhaust system and a high-performance air filter boots these numbers 606HP and 690Nm (509 lb-ft).

Tata Motors Recalling World's Cheapest Car, the Nano, to Upgrade Starter

Posted: 28 Dec 2011 05:43 AM PST

Tata Motors, the Indian automotive giant that owns the Jaguar and Land Rover brands, has issued the biggest ever recall action in India, concerning a little over 115,000 Nano city cars to replace the starter motor.

However, the company prefers to use the term "upgrade" instead of "recall" as it claims there is no safety hazard associated with the old starter motor.

The maker of the world's cheapest automobile said the installation of the new starter motor began in October this year and that it has already replaced the starter in 50,000 Nano cars.
