485HP Nissan Juke-R Hits the Silverstone Circuit Earlier than Expected [Video]

Posted: 05 Dec 2011 04:42 PM PST

We're not sure if this video of the Nissan Juke R being tested at the Silverstone race track in England was supposed to hit the airwaves (or so to speak) before the Japanese firm's upcoming 10th installment of its web series, but we're not the ones to complain.

At least for the video footage, that is, because someone ought to inform the auto buffs over at Spain's AutoHebdo Sport that when you show a video of a car like the Juke-R that's fitted with a 485HP-strong powerplant sourced from the GT-R, you shouldn't add any background music let alone, a techno beat…

Posted: 05 Dec 2011 02:36 PM PST

They say Christmas is a time for giving, and Ford's European division did exactly that by inviting Joulupukki over from his home in Lapland to Hungary to take part in in a number of charity events over the coming days.

For those of you wondering, Joulupukki is not the Finnish version of Jalopnik but as we learned from the all-knowing Wikipedia, Finland's version of Santa Claus with the name literally meaning "Yule Goat" or "Christmas Goat".

2014 Mazda MX-5 to Return to its Roots, Get a Small-Displacement Turbocharged Engine

Posted: 05 Dec 2011 02:03 PM PST

[2003 Mazda Ibuki Concept pictured above]

During the last two decades, most new models are bigger, safer, better equipped but also heavier than the vehicles they replace. The Mazda MX-5 is a typical example: the first generation launched in 1989 tipped the scales at just 980 kg (2,150 lb), while the current, third-generation model starts from 1,095 kg (2,410 lb).

Sure, it's roomier and more luxurious, but it's also more expensive and, although in no way a boring car, not quite as fun to drive as the original. In addition, you need to get the 2.0-liter engine to have the same kind of poke the original enjoyed with a 1.6-liter engine and its successor with a 1.8-liter unit.

Collaborations between two companies that belong in the same group is a common practice. However, platform or parts sharing, or even badge engineering, is not the only form of a partnership.

Posted: 05 Dec 2011 11:19 AM PST

Mercedes-Benz seems set to rejuvenate its entire lineup within the next couple of years. Now, one of our wily spies has caught yet another snap of a new Mercedes-Benz model, the second generation of the GL-Class that was snagged testing with reduced camouflage in Europe.

The new Mercedes-Benz ML-Class that forms the base for the longer 2013 GL-Class has already set the tone so don't expect any surprises on the design front.

That said, the three-row crossover model will look a lot like the vehicle it replaces combining a rising beltline and upright profile with the squared nose and other styling details of the newer ML.

Providing a free ride to influential people is a tried and tested method that carmakers employ to generate publicity about a model. Sports players and socialites, however, now have to take a back seat to people with a great influence on social media.

What exactly does this mean? Well, General Motors has enlisted the services of a company named Klout. This company ranks a person's "social influence" and then runs a sampling program providing said person with certain "perks" – in GM's case, a 2012 Chevrolet Sonic.
