Bolivia's Death Road Claims Another Victim when Bus Plunges Over a Cliff [Video]

Posted: 02 Jan 2012 04:04 PM PST

There's a grim reason why Bolivia's North Yungas road is more often referred to as the "Death Road": it has been estimated that every year between 200 to 300 travelers die on the 70 kilometer (about 43 miles) stretch of road leading from La Paz to Coroico, with a fatal accident occurring approximately every two weeks.

And sadly, the Death Road claimed another victim last week when a double decker bus plunged some 50 meters down a cliff after the road collapsed, possibly due to the heavy rainfall, according to the police report

The victim was the driver, who wisely attempted to make the dangerous passing only after all 50 passengers had cleared the double-decker bus. The terrifying incident was captured on film by one of the travelers, but be warned, it's not for the faint hearted.

Independent Directors Create Promotional Clips for the New Porsche 911

Posted: 02 Jan 2012 01:12 PM PST

Over the years, the Porsche 911 has earned a reputation of being one of a few true sports cars that can be driven on a regular basis, day-in, day-out. That comes in sharp contrast to some of its rivals that pose many limitations and as a result, their owners reserve them for special occasions – hence the extra-low mileage of used examples.

As part of a new promotion for the latest 911, Porsche Cars North America launched the "Everyday Magic" competition in which aspiring directors were invited to create a 60-second film about how the 911 is a practical yet at the same time almost "magical" sports car.

Launched at the 2008 Paris Motor Show, the Chevrolet Cruze hasn't been on the market for that long as it actually went on sale in Europe and Australia during 2009 and the U.S. and Canada in mid-2010.

That said, we were somewhat surprised to see this single scoop picture of what is claimed to be a facelifted version of the Cruze, and which was sent to the Czech website, Autoforum, by one of its readers.

Canadian who Drove Ferrari Enzo into the Atlantic Says he's "Gonna do Bigger, Better Next Time"

Posted: 02 Jan 2012 10:04 AM PST

You may not recall Zahir Rana's name, but you will surely remember his bright yellow, Edo-prepped Ferrari Enzo taking a dive into the Atlantic last September, since the incident was recorded and subsequently posted on YouTube where it made quite a splash.

Now, if you can afford to buy an Enzo, customize it to the tune of 860-horses and compete in a race with it, then the US$100,000 tab for repairing the damages sustained during this unscheduled plunge into the water may seem like small change.

New Footage from Bugatti Veyron 16.4 vs Nissan GT-R R35 Drag Race

Posted: 02 Jan 2012 09:04 AM PST

Last Wednesday on December 28, a stock Bugatti Veyron with 1,001HP and a Nissan GT-R R35 upgraded with some light performance mods met up at the Palm Beach International Raceway near Jupiter, Florida, for a friendly quarter-mile drag race.

Once the Bugatti owner managed to sort out the problem with the 16-cylinder model's launch control, the race took off with the Veyron completing the quarter-mile in 10.175 seconds at 139.44mph (224.4 km/h) versus the Nissan GT-R R35's 10.939 second run at 125.74mph (202.3 km/h).

The crew over at That Racing Channel was among others filming the duel between the Veyron and the GT-R and today, they tipped us off about a new behind the scenes video with commentary from both drivers as well as new footage they shot during the race.

Definitely worth a look. Take a gander for yourself right after the break.

Russian GAZ-69 Shows Toyota Land Cruiser 100 Who's the Boss

Posted: 02 Jan 2012 07:58 AM PST

Not all four-wheel drive models are made equal, and while Toyota's Land Cruiser series has made a name for itself as a durable and capable 4x4, there are certain vehicles out there that were purpose built for the harshest off-road environments.

One of those vehicles is the GAZ-69, a light off-road vehicle designed for the Soviet Army. The all-knowing Wikipedia tells us that it was produced initially by GAZ from 1953 to 1955 and by UAZ from 1954 until 1972, while Romania's ARO also built the truck under license from 1957 to 1975.

In the following video, we see a GAZ-69 successfully pulling a Toyota Land Cruiser 100 across a river. An impressive feat to say the least.

Investors Sue Porsche for $2.6 Billion Over Unsuccessful VW Takeover

Posted: 02 Jan 2012 06:19 AM PST

The automotive world was taken by surprise on October 17, 2007, when Porsche CEO Wendelin Wiedeking announced in an interview on the Sunday Times that the Stuttgart sports carmaker was ready to take over VW.

Wiedeking expected the so-called "Volkswagen law", which stipulated that no shareholder could have more than 20 percent of the voting rights of Europe's number one car manufacturer, to be ruled illegal by the European Court of Justice.

However, things didn't turn out as Wiedeking expected and in 2010, 18 hedge funds filed a US$2 billion lawsuit in the U.S. accusing the company and its former CEO (Wiedeking) and CFO (Holger Härter) for manipulating the market and trying to cover up the losses Porsche suffered after VW shares soared.
