SCOOP: This is the All-New 2014 Chevrolet Impala Sedan

Posted: 13 Jan 2012 09:04 PM PST

If you take a look at Chevrolet's North American passenger car range, there's one model that stands out like a sore thumb and that's none other than the Impala.

The full-size sedan, which was presented in its current form in 2005 but has its roots in the 1999 model, may be a retiree's rental delight, but General Motors seems to be past that phase and is finally readying a major overhaul for the series.

The new Impala, spied here in camouflage during testing, has nothing in common with the current Impala. Instead, it shares its lengthened Epsilon II platform and mechanical hardware with the soon to be released 2013 Cadillac XTS.

And like the XTS, the new Impala will be offered with both front- and all-wheel-drive, which will be a first for the Chevrolet sedan.

Engine options will surely include GM's 3.6-liter V6 with direct-injection and close to 320-horsepower, while the newly revealed 2.0-liter turbocharged four with 270-horses on the Cadillac ATS is a likely candidate for a mid-trim model. We also expect to see a version of the Impala fitted with GM's e-assist mild-hybrid technology.

High Heels and Hot Wheels from the 2012 Tokyo Auto Salon [Videos]

Posted: 13 Jan 2012 06:32 PM PST

The 2012 edition of the Tokyo Auto Salon, Japan's largest automotive aftermarket event, is into its second day, and even though it lacked a big presentation, it's always interesting to see what the local tuning industry has in store for us.

Even better when the plethora of tuned and heavily customized cars are accompanied by good looking –at least for the most part- models. In fact, some visitors like YouTube user "bbmovie1985", seem to have been more fascinated by the heels than the wheels, but who are we to judge?

We'll leave you to look at the videos that follow after the jump.

The Drift Wars: Bikes and Cars Engage in Sideways Challenge Videos

Posted: 13 Jan 2012 05:28 PM PST

A year ago in a track not so far away from here, Nick "Apex" Brocha rode a 2005 Kawasaki ZX-10 in a drift war against a Corvette-engined RX-7 with professional racecar driver Jim Guthrie behind its wheel at the Sendia, New Mexico speedway.

That was episode one of the High Planes Drifters video, which proved quite popular on YouTube.

The sequel features Nick, his teammate Ernie Vigil and two Roaring Toyz-tuned Triumph Speed Triples. What the two riders don't know is that, while they've been searching for the perfect stretch of tarmac to perform their sliding stunts, police officer Dan Brockett is out to get them. And his 550HP Mustang Cobra is also capable of going sideways, too.

You can watch the two videos right after the jump.

Germany Makes Twice as Many Cars as the U.S. Even though it Pays its Workers Twice as Much

Posted: 13 Jan 2012 04:46 PM PST

You're bombarded by the same message over and over again on the news and perhaps have even experienced it at your work as well: there is a global economic crisis, things are not going well, workers have to adapt and accept lower wages in order to keep their jobs.

It's happening all over the world, from Europe to the United States. Even the current administration's "car czar", Steve Rattner, said that the government should have pushed the UAW to take wage cuts in order to enhance U.S. automakers' competiveness.

It seems to make sense: cutting costs is a tried method of increasing a company's profitability. But what if it's all a lie created by profit-hungry, greedy mega corporations and perpetrated by the media – which, in some cases, are owned by the same people?

That's the question posed by Kevin C. Brown on his article in Remapping Debate. The argument he makes is quite compelling: how are German car workers at companies like BMW, Mercedes-Benz and VW paid twice as much as their counterparts in the U.S., yet manufacture twice as many cars?

Sorry Dad: 10 Year-Old Boy Takes $206k Maserati for a Joyride then Crashes

Posted: 13 Jan 2012 04:18 PM PST

The idea of swiping the keys of your father's car is something we probably all thought about at some point in our adolescent years. But how many of us really went ahead with the plan? Okay, you can put your hands down now…

One 10-year-old American boy in Hong Kong actually realized the idea and took his father's Maserati Gran Coupe, which was purportedly bought in 2009 for HK$1.6 million (US$206,000), for a crazy joyride near central Hong Kong.

Ferrari F1 Drivers Have FFun Doing Slaloms at Ski Resort [Video]

Posted: 13 Jan 2012 03:25 PM PST

With testing prohibited by FIA rules until the first official session at Jerez on February 7, Ferrari's Formula 1 team took a break from preparing its 2012 racer and as usual, visited the Madonna di Campiglio alpine ski resort.

It's a tradition that's being going on for many years now (if you're an F1 fan, you'll surely remember Michael Schumacher's exploits) and this time the Scuderia F1 drivers, Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa, had a little fun on the snow-covered slopes.

China Funds Auto Suppliers to Acquire High-Tech U.S. Companies, World Domination is Next

Posted: 13 Jan 2012 11:02 AM PST

The Chinese government is doing almost anything in its power - short of prohibiting imports altogether- to give domestic production a serious advantage over U.S. car manufacturers. At the same time, however, state-owned suppliers are receiving quite large amounts of cash to acquire U.S.-based rivals.

As managing director of investment banking firm FINNEA Group, Tim Leuliette, said that last May, the Chinese government earmarked no less than U.S. $60 billion for the acquisition of American companies.

"The Chinese did that because they need access to expertise to grow their economy", Leuliette explained. "They want to convert their trade surplus into hard assets."

This just in; we just found out that a convertible version of the Lexus LFA supercar made an unsuspected and very surprising debut at the D1GP Kick Off Drift event on the sidelines of the Tokyo Auto Salon 2012 outside the Makuhari Messe convention center.

Details remain extremely thin for now but we'll be searching for more information and pass it on as soon as we receive it. That said, we don't know yet if it's a one-off custom creation, a Lexus prototype or the first of a limited production series to be released onto the market.

The white-colored LFA convertible with the red interior featured a carbon fiber-dressed rollbar behind the front seats. It's a fully functional model as the unnamed driver demonstrated some drifting skills at the event.

More to come so stay tuned. For now, follow the jump to see the car in the video

You Can't Beat Gravity: VW Gol Rolls Down a Steep Road and Crashes

Posted: 13 Jan 2012 03:26 PM PST

You may be able to put up a fight, but in the end, gravity will always take you back from where you started – especially if you don't take the necessary safety measures…

Three men were trying to push a three-door Volkswagen Gol, which looks like it's an Alfa Romeo Arna - but we could be completely wrong, so feel free to enlighten us in the comments section below- up on a very steep road, purportedly in the Brazilian city of Belo Horizonte.

We don't know if someone was actually in the car and the brakes failed or if the three men wrongly assumed that they could handle it themselves (probably the latter as in the beginning of the video, the man in the green shirt looks like he's turning the wheel from the outside), but the result is the same as the hatchback escaped and rolled down the road crashing into a parked vehicle.

Roll down the jump to watch the video.

President Obama Praises Ford’s “Insourcing” of Jobs

Posted: 13 Jan 2012 05:34 AM PST

Last October, Ford signed a new four-year contract with the United Auto Workers (UAW) union that included adding 12,000 hourly jobs at its U.S. facilities over the next four years moving production from its plants in Mexico, Japan and China back to the States.

On Thursday, U.S. President Barack Obama praised Ford's decision as an example of companies that are bringing jobs back to the country and contributing to the growth of its economy.

"You've heard of outsourcing. Well, these companies are insourcing", said Obama adding that this deal wouldn't have been possible without the help of the UAW.
