Chrysler Boss asks if the 700C Concept Minivan is Stupid, Beautiful or Crazy [with Poll]

Posted: 10 Jan 2012 08:25 PM PST

If it's attention that Chrysler wanted, it sure got what it asked for with the most secretive concept model of the 2012 Detroit Auto Show, the 700C minivan. And this despite the fact that the automaker didn't even issue a formal press release on its conceptual people carrier.

But all for good reason as Chrysler brand global boss Saad Chehab explained in an interview with Australian news site Drive at the Cobo Center.

Chebab told the website that Chrysler did not release any supporting information on the 700C because it "wanted unsolicited opinion about the car and its potential" from the motor show visitors. He also said that the 700C was a last minute addition to Chrysler's Detroit Motor Show booth.

Toyota NS4 Plug-in Hybrid Sedan Concept Signals New Styling Direction [Updated / Videos]

Posted: 10 Jan 2012 07:21 PM PST

Toyota was one of the few brands that managed to keep one of its Detroit Auto Show debuts under covers until the grand opening and today, the Japanese manufacturer officially revealed the NS4, a sleek looking plug-in hybrid concept.

Like many other conceptual studies shown in Detroit, the NS4's role is to preview the future in the areas of styling and technology.

Toyota says that the NS4 concept signals a new styling direction for the brand "aimed at making an emotional connection with consumers". And truth to be said, the NS4 looks far more interesting than any other Toyota sedan – but then again, it's a concept, so it's supposed to look great.

Posted: 10 Jan 2012 05:42 PM PST

While Audi was showing off the revamped A4 Allroad (which replaces the Avant models in the U.S. market) at the Detroit Auto Show, back in Germany, the brand with the four-ring logo introduced the brand new 2013 A6 Allroad.

Posted: 10 Jan 2012 04:44 PM PST

Car manufactures always try to devise new ways to get the most publicity out of launching a new product. Sending a press release and some images, or pulling the wraps off at a motor show, is simply not enough.

For the all-new Buick Encore, GM chose to reveal pieces of a puzzle that completed an image of the vehicle. Yet, even though we could see most of it, the final piece that was missing fell into place today at the Detroit Auto Show.

...And this is the First Image of the 2013 Audi A3 Three-door Hatchback

Posted: 10 Jan 2012 05:08 PM PST

Allow us to give a big hat tip to Carscoop reader "Fcorbs" who quickly noticed the digital rendering of the 2013 Audi A3 3-door hatchback in one of the photos of the upcoming compact model's interior released only moments ago by the German firm on the occasion of the CES in Las Vegas.

As viewed in this image, the exterior design of the third iteration of A3 hatchback keeps the basic body style of the current model adding a more distinct fascia with its key stylistic elements such as the six-point grille and headlamps borrowed directly from the RS3 sedan concept shown in Geneva last year.

This is the All-New 2013 Audi A3's Interior

Posted: 10 Jan 2012 03:27 PM PST

In a similar way that General Motors used the presentation of its new CUE infotainment system to reveal the dashboard of its Cadillac XTS back in October, Audi brought a cutaway of its upcoming 2013 A3's interior to the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas to display its current technologies and future projects.

We'll get to the technological features later on, but for now, let's concentrate on the design of the dashboard that will find its way on all body styles of the next A3 including the three door hatchback, five door Sportback, four-door sedan and two-door convertible models.

The styling is typical Audi and closely resembles that of the smaller A2 series albeit polished up with decorative trims plus a more upscale instrument panel and center dash. The latter is also angled more towards the driver.

In addition, the lower console is positioned much higher than were used to in mainstream models like the A3.

New Mercedes-Benz SL and E-Class Hybrids Make their World Debut at the 2012 NAIAS

Posted: 10 Jan 2012 02:25 PM PST

Launching the world's most fuel-efficient full-size car and a brand-new groundbreaking roadster is not a bad way to draw people to your stand and that's exactly what Mercedes-Benz did at the 2012 Detroit Motor Show with the two hybrid versions of the E-Class and the sixth generation of the SL roadster.

The diesel-powered E300 BlueTEC Hybrid returns a fuel economy of 4.2 lt/100 km on the European combined cycle (54.6mpg US). Its powertrain combines a four-cylinder turbodiesel engine with an output of 204HP and 500 Nm (368.7 lb-ft) of torque with a 20 kW (27HP) and 184.3 lb-ft (250 Nm) electric motor, and features an auto stop/start system, regenerative braking, a pure electric mode and a "sailing" function.

Since diesel models are not yet popular in the North American market, Mercedes also launched the E 400 Hybrid as well. The internal combustion unit is a 306HP and 272.9 lb-ft (370 Nm) V6 that runs on gasoline fuel, while the electric motor is the same as the E 300 BlueTec's. The E400 Hybrid's average fuel economy in accordance with American CAFE standards is 27 mpg (8.7 lt/100 km).

If you liked Volkswagen's approach with the new Beetle then chances are you're going to give a thumbs up to the E-Bugster study that made its world premiere at the Detroit Auto Show this week.

Wider, lower and sportier looking that the regular Beetle, the concept's name blends the words "E" (for electric), "Bug" and "speedster". It's closest relative is the similarly styled Ragster study back from 2005.

Color Me White (Inside): New Shiro Edition Tops Nissan Juke Range in Europe

Posted: 10 Jan 2012 10:41 AM PST

To be honest, when we first heard the name of the Nissan Juke's new edition we thought it was a tribute to the brand's senior vice president and head of design, Shiro Nakamura, who has penned, among other models, the GT-R, the 350Z, the Murano and the Infiniti FX45.

But we were wrong to think so. Shiro in Japanese means white, and that's the name Nissan though was appropriate for the Juke's new range topping version in Europe.

U.S.-Bound Volvo XC60 Plug-in Hybrid Makes World Premiere in Detroit

Posted: 10 Jan 2012 10:03 AM PST

Seeing Volvo's president and CEO Stefan Jacoby driving the all-new XC60 Plug-in Hybrid Concept on stage during the car's launch in Detroit shows how important the U.S. market is to the (Chinese-owned) Swedish manufacturer.

That's because the USA remains the brand's biggest market in the world and in which it recorded a 25 percent sales increase in 2011 on top of a 20 percent rise the previous year.

The XC60 Plug-in Hybrid may be a concept, but Volvo is already openly talking about developing a production version and the impact it expects to have in North America.

2013 Honda Accord Coupe Concept Previews 9th Generation Model, Coming this Fall [Video]

Posted: 10 Jan 2012 08:59 PM PST

Like its Acura sibling, Honda is previewing one of its upcoming production models at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show with the presentation of the Accord Coupe Concept, which paves the way for the ninth-generation 2013 Accord series set to go on sale in North America this fall.

As you can see for yourself, the only conceptual parts of the Accord Coupe are the dramatically styled front and rear bumpers along with the side skirts and alloy wheel designs. Take out those and you have the next Accord Coupe, which truth to be said, doesn't really look all that new.

In fact, if Honda didn't tell us that it's the ninth generation model, we'd be inclined to think it's a facelift of the current series as the only changes to the design concern the fascia that gets new headlamps and a simpler, four-sided grille, a more sculptured beltline, pronounced rear wheel arches and newly shaped tail lamps
