New Lincoln MKZ Sedan Concept Officially Revealed, Previews Production Model

Posted: 09 Jan 2012 10:14 PM PST

The problematic luxury child of the Ford Motor group is trying to recuperate from years of neglect with a fresh concept model that not only previews the next MKZ mid-size sedan due in dealerships later this year but also serves as a vision of Lincoln's next-generation vehicles.

Of course, those of you that have been following the automotive industry will know that this is not the first time that Ford has attempted to rejuvenate its luxury brand. All the same, the Blue Oval claims that the MKZ Concept, which debuts at the 2012 Detroit Motor Show, marks a new era for Lincoln.

"With the Lincoln MKZ Concept, we are not introducing a new car. We are essentially introducing a new brand," said Derrick Kuzak, Ford's vice president for global product development. "The MKZ Concept is the next step in the reinvention of Lincoln, something we've been quietly but aggressively pursuing."

2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe Makes its U.S. Debut, gets 348HP V6 and 274HP 2.0L Turbo [Videos]

Posted: 09 Jan 2012 07:11 PM PST

It may be one of the lesser exciting premieres of the 2012 Detroit Auto Show from a readers' perspective as the 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe was officially revealed in its home market last November, but that doesn't mean it's not important from a buyer's point of view.

The mid-life facelift brings several significant updates for the Genesis Coupe including new powertrains and transmissions.

Starting with the four-cylinder model, the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine gains a more precise twin-scroll turbocharger and larger intercooler boosting output to 274 horsepower and 275 lb.-ft. of peak torque on premium fuel, or 260-horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 260 lb.-ft. of torque at 2,000 rpm using regular fuel.

First Official Photos of European Market 2013 Ford Mondeo Sedan

Posted: 09 Jan 2012 08:14 PM PST

We already knew that the new generations of Ford's global Mondeo and American market Fusion are one and the same, but just in case you had any doubts, here are the first official photos of a pre-production European specification model.

The only visible differences concern the headlamp assembly with the European Mondeo featuring different turning signals and the rear bumper trim, which, at least on this model, is painted in the same color as the body.

New Hyundai Veloster Turbo with 201HP Eyes the VW Golf GTI and Mini Cooper S [38 Photos + Video]

Posted: 09 Jan 2012 05:04 PM PST

Well, as they say, better late than never: the turbocharged version of Hyundai's Veloster coupe was officially unveiled today at the 2012 Detroit Motor Show.

The South Korean maker has set the bar pretty high with the 2013 Veloster Turbo aiming at the likes of the Volkswagen Golf GTI (given the absence of the Scirocco in the States) and the Mini Cooper S.

Under its sculpted bonnet lies a new 1.6-liter direct-injection gasoline engine with a twin scroll turbocharger that churns out 201HP at 6,000 rpm and 195 lb-ft (264Nm) of torque from 1,750-4,500 rpm in North American specification. That's a healthy 63HP increase over the regular Veloster.

There's also a new engine manifold and a different exhaust system with two free flowing circular tailpipes that promise to give the engine a more aggressive sound.

Acura Presents Redesign 2013 RDX "Prototype", Ditches Turbocharged Four for a V6

Posted: 09 Jan 2012 04:03 PM PST

The third Acura prototype to debut at the 2012 Detroit Motor Show today is the 2013 RDX crossover and just like the ILX compact sedan, there's nothing really conceptual about it as what you see here is what you'll get when the redesigned crossover model arrives in dealerships across the country in Spring 2012.

The second generation of Acura's five-passenger crossover has grown in size featuring a longer wheelbase and wider tracks that result in more passenger room, and increased cargo volume.

The styling both inside and out is intentionally more mainstream though Acura's beak-like front grille remains.

Chrysler Rolls Out Odd-Looking 700C Concept Minivan in Detroit

Posted: 09 Jan 2012 03:20 PM PST

Unlike the 2013 Dodge Dart, the Chrysler Group was able to keep the 700C Concept under wraps until the grand opening of the 2012 Detroit Auto Show. In fact, the Auburn Hills based company did better than that: it has yet to release any information whatsoever on the concept model…

Given the lack of details, we can only speculate on the 700C though out first guess would be that it is a study previewing one of many possible design directions for a future replacement to the Town & Country.

2012 NAIAS: Audi Brings the A4 Allroad to the U.S. to Replace the A4 Avant

Posted: 09 Jan 2012 02:27 PM PST

The 2012 Detroit Motor Show marks the return of Audi's Allroad series to the U.S. market for the first time since 2005. Only this time it's the A4 Allroad instead of the A6 Allroad. In addition, Audi said the A4 Allroad would replace the A4 Avant (upon which it is based) in America starting from the 2013 model year.

On the outside, the single frame grille with chromed vertical struts, stainless steel side sills and skid plates, along with the aluminum-optic roof rails distinguish the crossover model from its facelifted A4 Avant sibling.

Acura Dresses Up the Civic as the New ILX Compact Sedan, goes on Sale this Spring [Video]

Posted: 09 Jan 2012 10:09 PM PST

While the NSX Concept is the undisputed star of Acura's booth at the 2012 Detroit Motor Show, the Japanese automaker also brought along a more down-to-earth study that is the precursor to the new ILX luxury compact sedan.

With the exception of a few minor cosmetic details such as the bumper trims and the flashy alloy wheels, the ILX is pretty much production ready, which shouldn't surprise anyone given that it's scheduled for launch in North America this spring.

This is the New Acura / Honda NSX Sports Hybrid Concept that will Enter Production by 2015

Posted: 09 Jan 2012 08:25 PM PST

Acura has just introduced the NSX Concept at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit and these are the first official photos.

The Japanese automaker has shown several concept models over the years for a replacement to the iconic Honda / Acura NSX that was built from 1990 until 2005, but for one reason or the other, none of them managed to reach the production phase

This time, however, Acura says the NSX Concept is the real deal with the production model to debut within the next three years. Interestingly, Acura says that it will developed by an engineering team led by Honda R&D Americas, and manufactured in Ohio, at a yet to be named facility.

Like the original model, the NSX features a mid-mounted naturally aspirated V6 engine but with a twist; Acura's engineers added the firm's Sport Hybrid SH-AWD (Super Handling All Wheel Drive) hybrid system that utilizes three electric motors.

Lexus LF-LC Sports Coupe Concept Bows at the Detroit Auto Show [38 Photos + Video]

Posted: 09 Jan 2012 11:49 AM PST

We've been waiting for a while for Lexus to fully reveal its new LF-LC sports coupe concept and the wraps finally came off today at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

The LF-LC concept's primary role is to showcase the future design direction for Lexus though we secretly hope that it could also lay the foundation for a production sports coupe.

While the Japanese company provides a ton of information on the styling details, the only piece of information we get about the concept's hardware is that it sports a front-mounted engine with an Advanced Lexus Hybrid Drive that powers the rear wheels.

"The concept we're showing here in Detroit continues the Lexus design revolution started with the CT and GS," said Mark Templin, Lexus group vice president and general manager. "The concept hybrid 2+2 liberates the idea of a sport coupe and pushes the boundaries of performance, style and technology," he added.

Audi Displays Winter Sports-Themed Q3 Vail Concept with the RS3's 2.5L Turbo in Detroit

Posted: 09 Jan 2012 11:53 AM PST

As it turns out, the Audi Q3 Vail Concept wasn't a three-door crossover study as some sketches falsely suggested but a specially themed edition of the Q3 crossover, the regular versions of which are sold in other parts of the world including Europe but not in the States.

What makes this concept that is named after the famous winter sports venue in the U.S. a little more interesting is not so much the cosmetic enhancements as its mechanical hardware.

Posted: 09 Jan 2012 08:43 PM PST

The conceptual MKZ appears to be a little bit more study than what we were expecting given that its role is to preview the production model that will be unveiled withing the next year or so.

All-New 2013 Dodge Dart Compact Sedan Makes its Official World Premiere in Detroit

Posted: 09 Jan 2012 08:58 AM PST

We might have lost count of the times Alfa Romeo has announced its return to the U.S. only to push it further back a little while later, but we can say that the first 21st-century Alfa has already landed on the Land of the Free – sort of.

That's because the all-new Dodge Dart compact sedan that has been officially unveiled at the Detroit Motor Show is based on a modified version of the platform that underpins the Alfa Romeo Giulietta and is the first sample of the Fiat-Chrysler cooperation since the former gaining control of the latter in 2009.

Its design bears no resemblance to its Italian cousin, though, as the 2013 Dart, apart from being a four-door sedan and not a five-door hatchback it is longer and wider. It also features its own, distinctive design with the Dodge-trademarked crosshair grille and the Charger-inspired rear lights.

The Dart measures 183.9-in. (4,672mm) long, 72-in. (1,830mm) wide, 57.7-in. (1,465mm) tall and rides on a 106.4-in. (2,703mm) wheelbase, or roughly the same size as the latest BMW 3-Series!

Bentley Reveals Fresh Details on its New Continental V8 at NAIAS World Premiere

Posted: 09 Jan 2012 07:36 AM PST

The V8 versions of the Bentley Continental GT coupe and GTC convertible were unveiled almost a month before its Detroit Motor Show debut. Even though for decades Bentleys sported a turbocharged V8 under their hood, the Continental does not employ the 6.75-liter unit that powers the current Mulsanne, but a brand-new 4.0-liter unit.

Despite slotting below the W12 version, the V8's 500HP and 660Nm (487 lb-ft) ensure that it does service to the red badge that denotes the sportier Bentleys delivering a 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) time of under 5.0 seconds and a top speed exceeding 290 km/h (180 mph).

Smart For-Us Concept Debuts at the 2012 Detroit Motor Show

Posted: 09 Jan 2012 07:16 AM PST

Even though it's not exactly a surprise debut since it was teased more than a month ago, the Smart For-Us concept that will made world premiere at the 2012 NAIAS today raised more than a few eyebrows.

You see, the company that has so far based its existence on the two-seater, ultra-compact ForTwo city car claims that it "loves pickups"! And yes you read correctly: that's exactly what Smart CEO Anette Winkler said:

"We at smart love pick-ups – if they are small on the outside, large on the inside, very safe and extremely comfortable. With the smart for-us a petrol station is no longer required!"

Chevrolet Debuts Code 130R RWD and Tru 140S FWD Affordable Coupe Concepts

Posted: 09 Jan 2012 07:52 PM PST

General Motors has lifted the veil on a pair of Chevrolet concept models for an affordable sports coupe with seating for four that were created based on feedback received from young consumers across the United States in the past year.

"Chevrolet has always stood for making the aspirational attainable for all generations" said General Motors North America President Mark Reuss. "These two concepts interpret that vision for a new generation. We're seeking out our newest customers' opinions, listening to their advice, and engaging them in new ways."

The first concept model is called the Code 130R and despite the Chevy face and the Camaro-esque tail lamp design, its proportions, size and profile bear more than a passing resemblance to the BMW 1-Series Coupe.

Nissan Reimagines the Pathfinder as a 7-Seater SUV Based on a Unibody Platform [Video]

Posted: 09 Jan 2012 06:00 AM PST

Nissan may be calling the Pathfinder a concept but we all know that the study exhibited at this week's 2012 Detroit Motor Show is as close as it gets to the production model that will follow in fall this year.

The first thing you'll need to know about the 2013 Pathfinder is that Nissan has abandoned the current, third-generation model's body-on frame architecture and returned to a unibody construction. We say returned because the first generation of the SUV utilized a ladder-type frame with the second generation making use of a unibody construction.

The fourth generation of the Pathfinder also brings less rugged and more crossoverish looks and the promise for a more luxurious interior and a plethora of technological goods. Nissan also says that the SUV will offer excellent legroom in all three rows and ample cargo room behind the 3rd row of seats.

2013 Ford Fusion Sedan Officially Revealed, will be Marketed as the Mondeo in the Rest of the World

Posted: 09 Jan 2012 06:59 AM PST

The second-generation Fusion is the most important model Ford will launch at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. And this is because it's the Blue Oval's contender in the popular mid-size class not only in North America, but also in the rest of the world where it will replace the Mondeo.

The outgoing Fusion was the first model to feature Ford's then-new five-bar grille, which was later adopted by the rest of its U.S. range. Likewise, its successor is the model that introduces the next evolution of Ford's design language previewed by the Frankfurt Motor Show Evos concept.

It is distinguished by the slim headlights and the hexagonal, Aston Martin-like front grille, while the bodywork looks like a sportier, tauter evolution of the European Mondeo.

"The previous Fusion was an easy purchase for a customer to rationalize", said Chris Hamilton, chief exterior designer. "Our design goal for the new car was to give the mainstream sedan buyer a top-drawer visual experience, adding some emotional appeal to an already sensible choice."
