All New 2013 Porsche Boxster gets Aluminium Body and a Pair of Revised Flat-Six Engines

Posted: 11 Jan 2012 06:10 PM PST

The next iteration of the Porsche Boxster may not have made its world premiere in Detroit but the first official photos of the car were dropped onto the internet just as we were getting ready to write up our final post on the show.

This is the third generation of the Boxster since the birth of the series in 1996. The latest version of the two-seater model introduces an all-new lightweight body, upgraded flat-six engines with direct petrol injection, a completely revised chassis and in true Porsche fashion, evolutionary styling.

First of all, the new Boxster sports shorter front and rear overhangs along with a significantly forward-shifted windscreen and an overall flatter silhouette with the front end borrowing several design cues from the 918 Spyder Concept that's also heading to production. The rear gets a similar set of tail lamps to the outgoing model but with a protruding crease in the middle.

Living Legends: Oldest Mercedes 300 SL in Existence Shines at the Detroit Motor Show

Posted: 11 Jan 2012 08:35 PM PST

Sad to say, many classic vehicles are often left to rot and inevitably make the dreaded trip to the crusher, after being stripped out of anything that can be recycled.

Thankfully, that's not always the case and some vehicles survive even after 6 decades. Even though the first-ever 300 SL, a racing model from 1952, was destroyed, the second car that was built with chassis number 194 010 00002/52 survived as it was in Mercedes' ownership.

Auto Execs Take a Swipe at Each Other at the Detroit Motor Show

Posted: 11 Jan 2012 02:50 PM PST

Good manners dictate that unless you are provoked, you can politely ignore your adversaries. In the case of those involved in the auto industry, politely point out to your clients and/or the press why and in which areas your products are superior. That's a common practice. Openly attacking your opponents is considered rude.

But Not anymore. At the 2012 Detroit Motor Show, some pretty poisonous remarks were uttered by several executives. BMW North America boss, Ludwig Willisch, dismissed the new Cadillac ATS and Lincoln MKZ saying that, despite their claims, they are simply not in the same league as the 3-Series.

"We don't produce trucks, nor taxis or buses", said Willisch. "We don't produce sofas on wheels – and we don't take mass-market vehicles and rebadge them as premium."

VW BlueSport Roadster Production on Hold as Sales Numbers Don't Crunch up

Posted: 11 Jan 2012 10:43 AM PST

Three years ago, almost to the day, Volkswagen unveiled the BlueSport Concept at the 2009 North American International Show. At the time, sources within the company said that the mid-engine roadster was earmarked for production and would also underpin an Audi version as well as a "baby" Porsche Boxster.

The good news is that the BlueSport, which even in its concept form looked like it could enter production with only a few minor tweaks, is virtually ready to offer some open-top, rear-wheel drive affordable pleasure to potential buyers. At least that's what VW's engineering boss, Uli Hackenberg, told Autocar magazine.

New Fiat 500 Abarth Priced from $22,000* in the U.S., or about as Much as a 305HP Ford Mustang…

Posted: 11 Jan 2012 10:19 AM PST

Just because it's tiny and made from Europe's equivalent of Chevrolet, doesn't mean that the new 160-horsepower 2012 Fiat 500 Abarth comes in cheap.

In fact, it's US$22,000 price tag (*not including destination and handling charges) is sure to raise some eyebrows.

And this not only because it costs $6,500 more than the standard 101-horsepower 500, but also because it brings it in the same price range as sports cars like the 210HP 2012 Hyundai Genesis Coupe ($22,250) and even the 305HP 2012 Ford Mustang V6 ($22,310)!

Want to Become One of the First 86 Owners of the Scion FR-S? Read on

Posted: 11 Jan 2012 08:45 AM PST

The North American version of the Toyota 86 rear-wheel drive sports coupe will be available in in the U.S. this spring as the Scion FR-S. Despite the absence of the "86" designation in its name, Scion makes no attempt to cover the fact that the FR-S is a descendant of the original Toyota Corolla AE86.

This is why Scion will launch a first batch of 86 cars in the States before the FR-S becomes available to the general public.

D'oh! Lincoln MKZ Concept up in Smoke at the Detroit Auto Show

Posted: 11 Jan 2012 07:09 AM PST

There's a reason why the crowds aren't allowed to touch most concepts and prototypes, let alone take them for a spin. With a few exceptions, these models are created purely for show and lack the painstaking attention to detail under the skin found on production vehicles.

But while a mishap is understandable and perhaps even excusable, it's also hugely embarrassing -no matter how small it is- when it happens to a vehicle like the Lincoln MKZ Concept with which Ford itself says it's not only introducing a new car but "essentially a new brand". Even more so when the incident occurs at the largest auto show in North America

To make matters worse, Detroit's Free Press was on hand to film the smoke coming from the MKZ (or at least that's what it looks like in the video). Hop over the break to watch the clip.

Back in April of 2010, Daimler, Mercedes-Benz's parent company, and the Renault-Nissan Alliance announced a broad strategic cooperation in which the two companies exchanged a 3.1 percent stake with each other and made plans to collaborate on several projects.

The partnership seems to be going well as the two automakers announced plans to produce Mercedes-Benz 4-cylinder gasoline engines together at Nissan's powertrain assembly plant in Decherd, Tennessee. Production of the four-bangers will commence in 2014 with an initial annual capacity of 250,000 units.

Fiat-Chrysler "Willing" to Form an Alliance with Opel, GM Says it's Not Interested

Posted: 11 Jan 2012 05:36 AM PST

In 2000, General Motors and Fiat formed an alliance in which the American company gained 20 percent of the Italian manufacturer's shares in exchange for 5.1 percent of its own stock. Among other projects, the two companies jointly developed the Gamma platform for B-segment cars that underpinned the 2005 Fiat Punto and the 2007 Opel Corsa.

Fiat's partnership with GM was short-lived though, and was eventually dissolved – but not before the Italians got US$2 billion dollars as part of the original agreement.

Well, we don't know how to say "if at first you don't succeed, try again" in Italian, but Sergio Marchionne surely does – and despite the earlier failure, commented during the Detroit Motor Show that Fiat and Chrysler would be "willing participants" if General Motors wanted to discuss Opel tying up with another manufacturer.
