Video: Bloomberg’s Adam Haynes on the Aston Martin Cygnet

Posted: 01 Jun 2011 05:41 PM PDT

You can't spell, "Cygnet" without, "cynical marketing ploy". The Toyota iQ-derived stocking stuffer iPhone accessory subcompact has prompted a neat little op-ed piece by Bloomberg correspondent (an ex-pat Aussie) Adam Haynes that includes some fascinating dialogue from Aston Martin insiders.

Most of our readers will know by now that the Cygnet exists purely to counteract the 120 grams of CO2 per kilogram EU carbon restrictions to be introduced in 2012. With a combined CO2 g/km rating of 400, Aston Martin's current fleet of high performance vehicles could never match this.

Renault 4 Celebrates its Golden Anniversary with Design Competition

Posted: 01 Jun 2011 10:53 AM PDT

Renault's eminent 4 is turning 50 this year, and in recognition the French automaker and website Designboom are holding a special competition to see who can design the best Nouveau Quatrelle. Anyone can enter, though registration is mandatory, and the top prize is a 1965 Renault 4L driven by ex-F1 driver Michel Leclère in the 2011 Rallye Automobile Monte-Carlo. Works can be submitted through June 20, 2011, with the winner to be announced in July 2011.

More than eight million Renault 4's were sold over a thirty-one year period, starting in 1961 and ending in 1992. Renault's approach was to offer a functional, minimalist "everyman's car" with low running costs and a sturdy five-door body. Think of it as a Gallic precursor to Toyota's indestructibility mantra of the 1980s and '90s.

VIDEO: Giant Pothole on Bridge Swallows Lorry in China

Posted: 01 Jun 2011 10:10 AM PDT

We have all encountered them, but as with anything else in this life, there are potholes and there are potholes. The one that opened in the city of Changchun, which is the capital of China's Jilin province, is what you would call a supersized pothole, and to make matters worse, it occurred on a road bridge as a large lorry was passing over it.

The giant hole, which reportedly measured close to 50 feet long (about 15 meters) and 16-feet wide (around 15 meters), literally swallowed the commercial truck which then plunged down to the river. Chinese media reported that there were two men inside the lorry and that both were injured. Hit the jump for a video report of the incident.

Fiat Rumored to Bring Bravo Successor to the U.S. Market

Posted: 01 Jun 2011 06:48 AM PDT

The launch of the Fiat 500 in the U.S. market has whetted the Italian company's appetite, as according to reports, Fiat is now considering the addition of a second model to its North-American range, the successor to the Bravo. As we wrote last month, the next-generation Bravo will take the shape of a small crossover with Fiat looking to emulate the success of Nissan's Qashqai.

The 500's early sales figures have exceeded the firm's expectations despite initial concerns about relaunching the Fiat brand in the U.S. with such a small car. The partially open-top 500C was added to the range recently, with more powerful Abarth versions to follow in the very near future.

Posted: 01 Jun 2011 06:20 AM PDT

The newest Toyota recall affects approximately 106,000 Prius hybrids globally built from 2001 to 2003 for a fault with the electric power steering system. The Japanese automaker said the voluntary action affects around 52,000 Prius models sold in the United States.

"If the steering wheel is repeatedly and strongly turned to the full-lock position, there is a possibility the nuts securing the pinion shaft in the steering gear box assembly may become loose," Toyota said in a statement. The company added that if the owner leaves the condition uncorrected, over time they will gradually notice significant increased steering effort when making a left turn.
