AMV12: Sabino Leerentveld’s V12-Engined Aston Martin Hypercar Concept

Posted: 24 Jun 2011 09:57 PM PDT

Take these three cars: the Jaguar XJ220, the Aston Martin DBR9 and ItalDesign's BMW Nazca M12 Concept and amalgamate them into an Aston Martin Bulldog for the 21st century and there's a good chance you'll have Dutch designer Sabino Leerentveld's AMV12 design study.

Taut, masculine lines blend seamlessly with Aston Martin's signature styling to create something truly unique. Presumably fitted with a V12 engine, this front / mid-engined (I honestly can't tell) design study proposes a model that would theoretically sit above the limited edition Aston Martin One-77.

There's also a Lamborghini Diablo, Jaguar XJ220 and Bugatti EB110 in there among others. Props to anyone who can help us identify the rest. The unusual item is being sold by Mantiques Modern [sic] of New York.

For details on price, you'll have to contact the dealer, but something tells us it won't be cheap… More photos of the artsy piece in the gallery after the break.

Dancing with the Bikes: The Most Twisted Video You’ll See Today

Posted: 24 Jun 2011 01:42 PM PDT

What you're about to see in the following video is one of the weirdest motorcycle accidents ever with an unexpected -yet admittedly, highly enjoyable-twist.

It features two racing motorcycles and their respective drivers during a round of the promosport Championship at the Magny Cours track in France. The incident began when the first motorcyclist slips before a turn sending his bike sliding on the tarmac, and eventually hit a rider in front knocking him down from his bike.

Up until this point, there is nothing out of the ordinary about the incident. But as the two bikers get up and try to lift their motorcycles, it happens… See for yourself in the video after the jump.

BMW’s Decision to Replace 65 Union Employees with Cheaper Workforce in California Angers Senator Boxer

Posted: 24 Jun 2011 12:37 PM PDT

Senator Barbara Boxer, a California Democrat who is also the Ethics Committee chairwoman, has joined forces with Teamsters President James P. Hoffa, in an attempt to persuade BMW North America to reconsider its stance on a local labor dispute over 65 jobs.

The German automaker has said it will not renew its contract with Teamsters Union Local 495 that expires on Aug. 31 and will instead hire an outside company to run its parts distribution center, located in Ontario, California.

In a letter sent to BMW North America CEO Jim O'Donnell, the California Senator said that the Bavarian company should rethink its decision and take into consideration the fact that it received $3.6 billion in low-interest loans during the 2008-2009 taxpayer bailout.

There you HAVEit: VW Renders Drivers (almost) Obsolete

Posted: 24 Jun 2011 11:51 AM PDT

We've seen them in science-fiction films: cars that drive themselves. And, as car enthusiasts, we hoped that this invention will never be realized, or at least not in our lifespan. But is seems like Volkswagen and the EU have other plans.

At the final presentation for the HAVEit (Highly Automated Vehicle for Intelligent Transport) project in the Swedish city of Boras, the German car company presented the "Temporary Auto Pilot", or TAP, a system that allows the car to semi-automatically drive itself up to speeds of 130 km/h (80 mph) on motorways, with the driver simply monitoring the vehicle.

Posted: 24 Jun 2011 10:50 AM PDT

Eagle-eyed Carscoop reader Michael from Germany is always on the lookout for any new cars and prototypes on the road. His latest catch is the freshly revealed MINI Coupe in a blue suit with silver stripes, while he also seized a couple of shots of the new BMW 1-Series hatchback, both of which were spotted in Munich.

The new MINI Coupe was only just unveiled online a couple of days ago, so we assume the car pictured is most likely an early production version used for testing.

Maserati SUV may get Hemi V8, not Ferrari V8 after all

Posted: 24 Jun 2011 10:12 AM PDT

Environmentalists may hate them, but SUVs have proved quite popular –that's why even carmakers with no former experience are jumping in on the bandwagon, especially in the executive (and most profitable) market. The latest automaker to do so is Maserati which will launch its first ever crossover next year.

At first, Fiat-Chrysler's CEO, Sergio Marchionne, had revealed that that the Maserati SUV will be based on the new Grand Cherokee's platform, which in turn is based on the quite capable Mercedes M-Class. However, Marchionne had also hinted that, like other Maserati models, it may get a Ferrari V8 –a very mouth-watering, and logical, proposal since the two companies belong to the same group.

Ford and Dodge Flop, Lexus and Honda Top JD Power’s 2011 U.S. Initial Quality Study

Posted: 24 Jun 2011 09:19 AM PDT

The results are in for JD Power's latest 2011 U.S. Initial Quality study that looks at the first 90 days of ownership and the news is not good for Ford Motor Company. The Dearborn-based company tumbled from fifth place and highest-ranking non-luxury automaker last year to 23rd in 2011 with 116 problems per 100 vehicles. Analysts claim that Ford's freefall is due to complaints related to the company's onboard MyFord Touch infotainment systems.

Even worse, Dodge was placed last in the list with 137 problems per 100 cars. Scion, MINI, Volkswagen, Mitsubishi and Suzuki didn't fare well either occupying the last places in the study.

Whatever your opinion of royal families, you can't deny that they know a thing or two about spectacular weddings, as evidenced recently by the huge viewership of the Prince William-Kate Middleton tie-up.

And Lexus is the one providing the newlyweds' transportation by building a one-off version of its top of the range LS 600h limo. This version, which has been engineered by Belgian coachbuilder Carat Duchatelet and took over 2,000 hours to complete, is a Landaulet.
