SCOOP: Land Rover Spotted Testing the 2013 Range Rover

Posted: 08 Jun 2011 05:53 PM PDT

Although roughly less than two years away from launch, Land Rover continues to use engineering mules to test the next generation of its Range Rover model. And by mules, we mean that the British firm is utilizing a modified body of the current luxury SUV with a different front end and beefier wheel arches hiding the wider tracks of the new platform architecture.

And while the 2013 Range Rover's looks remain a mystery for now, we do know that it will adopt a new lightweight aluminium chassis using know-how from the group's Jaguar brand. Furthermore, the new model will feature an alloy body shell while certain components will be made of composite materials.

Aussie Supercar Buyers Paying More than Anyone Else

Posted: 08 Jun 2011 04:14 PM PDT

In today's economy, AU$1.0 will get you US$1.06, but it seems Australia's overseas automakers have yet to acknowledge this. A Lamborghini Aventador, for example, costs a hefty AU$754,600 – or more than twice the price you would pay for one in the U.S. of A. And its 51% pricier than a V12 powered Lamborghini Diablo was ten years ago. This was tolerable when the Aussie dollar was worth 64 U.S. cents a few years ago, but those days are over.

While TV's, computers and mobile phones have all become more affordable, supercars have not. It's so bad that one prospective Lamborghini buyer, businessman Ra Hazouri, has flat out refused to pay.

Gutsy Toyota Supra Driver Drifts Around $2 Million Bugatti Veyron

Posted: 08 Jun 2011 03:00 PM PDT

No matter how talented you are, it takes a lot of guts and an extra dose of craziness to attempt what you are about to see in the video clip after the break, because it's one thing going around a Ford Pinto in circles and another when the car in question is a Bugatti Veyron priced close to $2 million.

The man behind this feat (if you can call it that) is 25-year-old pro drifter Derek "Buttsy" Butler from Ireland. Buttsy performed the…gutsy drift stunt around the exotic 1,001-horsepower supercar in a heavily modified Toyota Supra during this year's Gumball 3000.

It’s a Sedan, It’s a Hatchback, It’s a Portable Greenhouse: Antti Eskeli’s Maininki

Posted: 08 Jun 2011 12:56 PM PDT

Here's an innovative idea from Finnish designer Antti Eskeli: a four-seat luxury sedan concept with a "changeable chassis length", making it as compact as a small hatchback for city driving. So what if the foldable car is nothing new; I'd wager one's never looked as good as Eskeli's Maininki concept.

It's just one of many entries into the 2011 Michelin Challenge Design Showcase we've reported on previously. There is something surprisingly masculine about Eskeli's fluid, organic design; like cavorting dolphins or an Antarctic glacier.

Buick’s 37mpg 2012 LaCrosses with eAssist Priced at $30,820, New V6 with 303HP also Available

Posted: 08 Jun 2011 12:01 PM PDT

The big news for the 2012 model year Buick LaCrosse sedan is the introduction of a new standard 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with eAssist and a newer, more powerful and more efficient version of the direct-injected, E85-capable 3.6-liter V6 unit that sits atop of the range.

The entry-level LaCrosse with GM's micro-hybrid eAssist technology is expected to deliver 25 percent better highway fuel economy than the current base model with the 182HP 2.4-liter four-pot, but not without a penalty at the showroom as prices start at $29,960 before an $860 destination charge for a total of $30,820. That's an increase of $2,830 over the current 2011 LaCrosse CX.

Posted: 08 Jun 2011 11:24 AM PDT

In a very…tongue-in-cheek move, Chrysler's newly formed Street and Racing Technology (SRT) brand responded to fans asking them on various social media sites what future products are in development by posting this…revealing sketch on its dedicated Facebook page. Here is what Chrysler's SRT team wrote:

"Like many of you, Twitter user @DaveOrrSales asked for a taste of what's to come at SRT. We dodged death to sneak you this top-secret photo. That's all you get, crew."

Too Close for Comfort: Subaru Impreza WRX Flips Over Right in Front of Spectators in Canada

Posted: 08 Jun 2011 09:36 AM PDT

A fun track day at the Toronto Motorsports Park near the town of Cayuga in Ontario, Canada, almost turned tragic for both the driver and many of the spectators gathered behind the safety wall when an older generation Subaru Impreza WRX flipped over after exiting a corner.

From the video, it looks like the driver of the Impreza took the corner wider and faster than he was ready for and as a result crashed into, or rather ran over, the safety haystack near the wall, which acted as a launching ramp lifting the car into the air only inches away from the spectators. The car then landed on its rooftop several feet away.

According to eyewitnesses, the driver of the Subaru, who was wearing a helmet, was shaken but...not stirred. But enough talking already. Follow the break to watch both the incident as it happened and the aftermath.

New 2012 BMW 1-Series Hatch gets its own Short Films

Posted: 08 Jun 2011 07:25 AM PDT

After the unveiling of the 2012 1-Series 5-door hatchback, it is time for BMW's marketing team to take over and promote the Bavarian automaker's latest product. The German company created a series of short films around the 1-Series starring two brothers, named Freddy and Adam.

According to the script, Freddy is an actor and a model leaning towards metrosexuality, while Adam dislikes cameras and works with architects, and is the wilder one of the two brothers. The goal here is to show off the double nature of the 1-Series hatchback, and especially the introduction of the two new trim lines, Sport and Urban, both of which gain bespoke interior and exterior design as well as equipment features.

GM Wants to Start Building Cadillacs Abroad by the End of 2012

Posted: 08 Jun 2011 06:40 AM PDT

While speaking to the media, General Motors CEO Dan Akerson revealed plans to expand Cadillac production outside of North America by the end of 2012 as part of the Detroit firm's efforts to make its premium brand a "true global marque". According to Akerson, building Cadillacs in other areas of the world would safeguard the company from foreign-currency fluctuations and allow GM to better handle its supply chain.

Currently, the only Cadillac model assembled outside of North America is the China-market SLS, which is a stretched version of the STS sold in the States. Akerson did not reveal where GM plans to build the Cadillac models.
