Yuhan Zhang’s Aqua is the Personal VW Hovercraft Concept of Tomorrow Posted: 03 Jun 2011 03:21 PM PDT Before budget airlines and the Channel Tunnel, the faster way to get from Britain to France was by hovercraft. The largest of these was the SNR4, a 300-ton behemoth capable of carrying 380 passengers and 40 cars at a speed of 70 mph (113 km/h). In the 1950s and '60s, magazines like Popular Science and Popular Mechanics were predicting a future where we'd all be cruising around in affordable, personal hovercrafts. Sadly, it was not to be. Now, some 11 years after the last SNR4 was retired, 21-year-old industrial design graduate Yuhan Zhang has resurrected the personal hovercraft in the form of her Volkswagen Aqua study. Read more » |
Posted: 03 Jun 2011 02:35 PM PDT We knew that the next generation of the BMW 1-Series was coming but we didn't expect to see the compact hatchback making its appearance so early. These official photos along with the first details showed up on a German website called Motor Traffic, as BMW has not yet made an announcement. Seen here in a five-door format, the new 1-Series evolves the current model's styling with sharper and more prominent creases all around along with a much more pronounced front end that sports unusually large headlamps pushed to the far corners of the bumper literally hugging the wheel arches. Was ist das? Strange Volkswagen-Skoda Hybrid Spied in Munich Posted: 03 Jun 2011 01:42 PM PDT Roman Jagatić is the latest addition to our ever-growing list of readers-turned-into spy photographers. Roman stumbled upon this strange looking Volkswagen-Skoda hybrid prototype parked at a gas station in Munich, Germany. The test car appears to combine a modified body of a Skoda Octavia with a Volkswagen front end. While we do not have a definite answer to what it may be, possible scenarios include a test car for a new Skoda Octavia and a prototype for a Volkswagen-badged model for select markets outside Europe. Renault Teases More Potent version of Megane RS Posted: 03 Jun 2011 01:08 PM PDT One of Europe's finest hot hatches is about to get better as Renault is readying a new edition of the Megane RS that will be unveiled to the world on June 17, 2011. The French carmaker released a teaser video of the car from the test runs at the Nurburgring racetrack in Germany. However, that's about all Renault is willing to reveal for now so we'll have to wait and see what kind of upgrades the car will feature and if a power boost and / or a weight reduction and chassis enhancements are part of the package. Decorative Overkill on a Porsche Cayenne SUV Posted: 03 Jun 2011 10:27 AM PDT While never mainstream, car decorations in the broadest sense of the word have always appealed to certain people. However, this is something you expect to see on an old, probably run down, conventional vehicle and not on a fairly new upscale model like the first generation Porsche Cayenne SUV…. The absurdly decorated German SUV with the Ontario license plates is covered in stickers, badges, chrome add-ons, reflectors and toys. We even managed to discover a few LED spotlights on the SUV's hood. Talk about overkill… More photos in the gallery after the jump. Read more » |
VW Golf GTI Cabriolet Concept Live from Wörthersee. Should it be Built? Posted: 03 Jun 2011 09:11 AM PDT Yesterday, we brought you the first images of Volkswagen's Golf GTI Cabriolet study but today we have live photos from the car's world premiere at the Wörthersee meeting in Austria along with official information on the concept. The hotted-up convertible is based on the standard Golf GTI with power coming from the same 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine delivering 210-horsepower and 280 Nm (207-lbs/ft) of peak torque at 1.800 rpm. Volkswagen says the open-air model's performance matches that of the closed-top GTI with a 0-100km/h (62mph) sprint time of 7 seconds and a top speed of around 240km/h (149 mph). Read more » |
2012 Chevrolet Impala: First Photos and Details, gets 3.6-liter V6 SIDI Posted: 03 Jun 2011 07:43 AM PDT While it may not be the redesign Chevrolet fans were hoping for, nevertheless, five years after the introduction of the current Impala onto the market in 2006, General Motors is updating its full size sedan with some barely noticeable cosmetic changes and a new standard engine for the 2012 model year. The most significant change is of course the adoption of General Motor's latest 3.6-liter V6 engine with direct-injection technology and E85 Flex-fuel capability, linked to a standard six-speed automatic transmission. The preliminary spec-sheet does not refer to performance numbers, but it has been reported that the V6 should be good for around 302-horsepower. Read more » |
Report: Mazda to Cut Ties with Ford and Stop U.S. Production by 2013 Posted: 03 Jun 2011 06:47 AM PDT Earlier in May, we told you about a report concerning Mazda's plans to discontinue production of its Mazda6 mid-size model at its joint-venture plant with Ford in Michigan. Today, new reports from both Japan and the U.S. are claiming that Mazda Motors will dissolve its 50-50 joint venture with Ford and stop building cars in the USA by 2013, with the Japanese company already in talks with the Detroit automaker to sell its stake in their car production venture Auto Alliance International [AAI]. Audi Drops the Top on Extreme R8 GT Spyder with 560HP V10 Posted: 03 Jun 2011 06:10 AM PDT Audi continues to expand its vehicle range filling every possible niche in the market. After the recent debut of the A6 Avant, today, the Ingolstadt-based automaker revealed the convertible version of its hardcore R8 GT coupe, which was launched as a limited edition model in 2010 with only 333 cars being produced. The new R8 GT Spyder follows the same recipe featuring a more powerful V10 engine and a lighter body. Power comes from an updated version of the standard car's 5.2-liter V10 engine with a modified ECU that helps lift output from 525HP and 530 Nm (390.91 lb-ft) to 560HP and 540 Nm (398.28 lb-ft) of torque at 6,500 rpm. An R tronic sequential manual transmission and Audi's quattro permanent all-wheel drive system with a strong rear-wheel bias completes the setup. Read more » |
