BMW and Cundari Produce the World’s Longest Internet Ad

Posted: 02 Jun 2011 02:20 PM PDT

In what's either a clever bit of marketing or an epic jumping the shark moment, Canadian ad firm Cundari has produced what it claims to be the longest banner ad ever for the BMW X3.

The ad, which measures 300 by 18,000 pixels (!) when fully extended, contains some 5,500 words of text and just goes on and on and on. So much so that I just skimmed through, trying to figure out if there was a point to it. It certainly didn't make me want to buy an X3, but maybe that's not what Cundari was trying to achieve.

Did Audi Import Its New A6 Avant Commercial from Detroit? Chrysler Thinks So

Posted: 02 Jun 2011 11:05 AM PDT

It's not uncommon these days for certain companies to reproduce (or at least try to) the styling and/or the available technology features of Germany's finest carmakers but this time we have a story that turns the tables the other way around. In mid-May, Audi aired a new commercial for the just launched A6 Avant in its home market. The ad shows the executive station wagon model cruising through streets of a German city as a version of Eminem's "Lose Yourself" song plays in the background.

If you watch the commercial in the video after the jump and it reminds you of Chrysler's "Imported from Detroit" ad for the new 200 sedan from this year's Super Bowl event, rest assured you are not alone.

"It is absolutely shocking," said Joel Martin, manager of Eight Mile Style, the company that handles the song licensing for Eminem. "We believe Audi not only used 'Lose Yourself' to sell their product without permission, but their spot actually feels inspired by elements of Chrysler's commercial campaign," Martin added.

Ford’s Smallest Production Engine Ever: The New 1.0-liter EcoBoost Three-Cylinder Gasoline Unit

Posted: 02 Jun 2011 09:24 AM PDT

It took the Ford Motor Company a very long time to jump aboard the turbocharged engine bandwagon for mainstream, non-sport models, but now the Detroit automaker is going full speed ahead with the presentation of a full range of force-fed gasoline powerplants. Ford latest offering is a new 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine, the company's first three-cylinder unit and its smallest production engine ever.

Designed by the engineering team at Ford's Dunton Technical Centre in the U.K., the 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine promises to deliver performance of a larger four-cylinder unit with even higher fuel economy. It employs all EcoBoost technologies, such as turbocharging, direct injection and twin independent variable camshaft timing (Ti-VCT).

Hail Fail: BMW 5-Series Owner Tries to Save His Car by Dressing it Up…

Posted: 02 Jun 2011 08:36 AM PDT

Unless you are able drive into to an enclosed garage nearby, there's not really much you can do to protect your car -or anything else in danger for that matter- if you are caught out in a severe hail storm. However, this doesn't mean that some people won't try to prevent the inevitable like this owner of a previous generation BMW 5-Series sedan.

Said to be a Croatian tourist on a visit to Slovenia, the owner of the Bimmer attempted to save the body of his beloved car by covering it up with whatever he could find. In this case, the only available items were some clothes he had in a plastic bag. Somehow, it doesn't seem like such a great idea... Watch the clip right after the break.

Volkswagen Brings Golf GTI Cabriolet Study as well to Wörthersee Meet

Posted: 02 Jun 2011 08:04 AM PDT

And the news just keeps dropping in from the largest annual GTI Meet in the world at lake Wörthersee in the southern Austrian state of Carinthia. Aside from the 270-horsepower strong Golf R Cabriolet concept that we told you about earlier today, Volkswagen also brought along a GTI study of the recently launched drop-top model.

We're still short on information as Volkswagen has not yet published any details, but it's safe to say that the Golf GTI Convertible is powered by either the standard Golf GTI hatchback's 210HP 2.0-liter TFSI or the Golf GTI 35th Anniversary Edition's 235HP 2.0-liter turbocharged unit sourced from the Golf R Obviously power is transferred to the front wheels either through a six-speed manual gearbox or VW's DSG transmission. The car also appears to be riding on a lowered suspension.

Volkswagen Debuts Golf R Cabriolet Study with 270-Horses at Wörthersee

Posted: 02 Jun 2011 07:35 AM PDT

This year's Wörthersee meet in Austria is turning out to be quite an event for the Germans with the Volkswagen Group brands churning out one concept after the other. Following the debut of the Skoda Fabia RS 2000 Convertible, the German group pulled the veils off the Golf R Cabriolet study.

Using the recently introduced new Golf Cabriolet as a base, the designers and engineers of the Volkswagen R GmbH division built a convertible version of the gutsy Golf R hatchback.

Just like its closed top counterpart, the soft-top Golf R Cabriolet is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine putting out 270-horses and 350Nm (258.2 lb-ft) of peak torque from a low 2,500 rpm. The standard sprint to 100km/h (62mph) from standstill comes in less than 6.0 seconds while top speed is limited at 250km/h (155mph).

Skoda Shows Fabia RS 2000 Convertible Concept at Wörthersee Festival

Posted: 02 Jun 2011 05:18 AM PDT

Over the 30 years of its existence, the Wörthersee Tour in Austria has developed from a small exclusive event for owners of the Golf GTi to a large happening connecting all brands of the ever-growing Volkswagen Group. Joining the production Golf GTI Edition 35 and the wild Audi A1 clubsport quattro concept at this year's show is a prototype model from Skoda called the RS 2000 Concept.

Prepared especially for the anniversary meeting, the concept is a design study for an extreme convertible based on the five-door Fabia Super 2000 rally car. Skoda did not released any official information on the car's mechanical hardware, but it very likely that the study keeps the rally model's 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine linked to a six-speed sequential transmission and a four-wheel drive system with three passive differentials.
