Nissan Leaf vs Chevrolet Volt: Who will Win the Sales Battle?

Posted: 10 Jun 2011 05:35 PM PDT

Even though the new Nissan Leaf and the Chevrolet Volt are two very different cars when it comes to details, they do have a common denominator: they are the most technologically advanced eco-friendly vehicles that are mass-produced and readily available in the U.S. market. That said, it's interesting to see how they're doing in sales this year.

Believe it or not, it's a fierce neck-to-neck sales battle so far in 2011 with only 17 cars separating the Leaf from the Volt. Nissan has delivered 2,184 examples of the pure-electric Leaf from January to the end of May, while GM has sold 2,167 units of Chevrolet's extended range electric vehicle in the same period.

Some people are so much into supercars that they don't mind spending hours and hours on the road waiting for one to come by and record it in action. We, on the other hand, prefer to be the recipients of their work…

Coffee and Cars: Eric Leong’s Saab Nespresso Concept

Posted: 10 Jun 2011 12:57 PM PDT

Industrial design student Eric Leong, who we first heard about with the 2015 Toyota Prius study, has taken two famous brands, Sweden's Saab and Switzerland's Nestlé and melded them. The result is the Saab Nespresso Concept, a four-seat sport coupe with some clever design touches. Outwardly it looks like a cross between the 2008 Saab 9-X Air BioHybrid Concept and Toyota's FT-86 Concept of 2009, but it's on the detail side of things were Leong's idea really shines. Nissan Pays Top Execs Twice as Much as Toyota and Honda

Posted: 10 Jun 2011 11:35 AM PDT

Toyota's executives must be green with envy once they hear the salaries of their counterparts in Nissan. That is because, Nissan's top directors were paid more than twice as much for the fiscal year that ended last March than their equals at Toyota, according to a report from Bloomberg. And this despite the fact that Toyota is Japan's biggest car manufacturer and Nissan is number two.

In a statement that Nissan issued before its annual meeting on June 29, average salary, including bonuses, for 14 executives was 126 million yen, or $ 1.6 million. In comparison, Toyota paid its 38 directors and auditors an average of about 41 million yen per executive.

Report: GM Fed up with Opel, but a Sale isn’t on the Table

Posted: 10 Jun 2011 09:29 AM PDT

They say, where there's smoke, there's fire, and true enough in the case of GM's relationship with its European subsidiary Opel, there seems to be a lot of smoke piling up lately. Just yesterday, press reports from Auto Bild and Spiegel Online said that GM is looking for a buyer, but the news was quickly dismissed by spokespeople from both Opel and the government of Germany's state of Thuringia, home to one of the brand's factories.

Today, Reuters came out with a new report saying the Detroit automaker is "frustrated" with its money-losing Opel brand and is "considering options for a turnaround", noting, however, that a sale of the Opel brand is highly unlikely.

"Akerson is fed up with Opel, and the turnaround isn't gaining traction," a unnamed source who is close to the GM CEO told Reuters. "He is trying to think of all possibilities to improve performance. But a sale is wishful thinking," the source added.

Meet the First Modified 2012 Volkswagen Beetle Inspired by the Porsche 911 GT3 RS

Posted: 10 Jun 2011 08:20 AM PDT

We have no doubt that this year belongs to the new 2012 Volkswagen Beetle when it comes to tuning mainstream cars. Just wait and see once the first production models begin arriving in the market this fall. For those of you that can't linger until September, here's a first example of a tuned 2012 Beetle.

The 2012 Beetle RS Stage 1 is the creation of the Volkswagen-loving crew at VWvortex who were given a pre-production model by the German firm to work on. Since the vehicle came with no registration and license plates, the team decided to skip on the engine modes for now and concentrate on the styling aspect of the tune, which as you may have already guessed by now, was inspired by the Porsche 911 GT3RS.

From Poland with Love: Arrinera Supercar Revealed in the Flesh [with Video]

Posted: 10 Jun 2011 07:25 AM PDT

It has been three years since we first told you about a new supercar venture from Poland (see here). Many had expressed doubts as to whether the newly formed company, then named Veno Automotive, could pull it off and create the country's first supercar model. Fast forward to today, and the Polish company, which is now called Arrinera Automotive, presented the first real-life prototype of its yet to be named supercar model.

While to a lesser degree than what the original sketches from 2008 implied, the prototype Arrinera features an edgy styling and certain details like the shape of the headlamps and front air vents that are all very similar to Lamborghini's Murcielago / Reventon series.

Renault Unleashes Super Hot Mégane RS Trophy with 265-Horses

Posted: 10 Jun 2011 08:43 AM PDT

With the Italians still trying to find their way and the Japanese being limited for now to the Mazda3 MPS, it's up to the French to question the German leadership in the upper range of the hot hatchback segment. Now, Renault is raising the stakes with the presentation of a hotter version of its RenaultSport Mégane boasting more power under its hood.

The Mégane RS Trophy is a special edition version of the standard model with a limited production run of 500 cars. Renault is quick to note that the Trophy is not a successor to the hardcore R26R, which leaves the door open to a more extreme variant in the near future.
