GM’s EN-V to Replace Cars in Tianjin, China’s Futuristic Eco-City

Posted: 17 Aug 2011 04:04 PM PDT

At the 2010 Shanghai World Expo, General Motors (GM) unveiled a trio of two-wheeled neighborhood electric vehicles (NEVs) collectively named EN-V to the world.

Unlike the brand's mainstream models, these concepts were lightweight and compact EVs for an as-of-yet unrealised city of the future. With a host of telematics and cameras to avoid other EN-Vs, pedestrians and other obstacles on the road coupled with a highly accurate GPS system, these concepts were theoretically accident-proof and self-driving.

Now a consortium from China and Singapore are drawing up plans for Tianjin Eco-City: a large-scale prototype for the sort of sustainable, high-density communities we're expected to see in the coming decades.

Posted: 17 Aug 2011 03:29 PM PDT

Electric vehicles are the new black. However, Ferrari's president, Luca di Montezemolo begs to differ. And we are talking about the man responsible for transforming Maranello's supercars from fragile and non-practical toys for the wealthy to the finest in their class, while also turning the Scuderia's F1 fortunes around bringing home five consecutive world championships.

Toyota Spent $1.2 Million Courting Washington Politicians in Q2 of 2011

Posted: 17 Aug 2011 12:06 PM PDT

Lobbying is a fact of political life in most democracies. And as with everything else, it isn't for free: you can never get something for nothing, and the companies know that very well. So they are prepared to spend quite a lot of cash on lobbying the US House and Senate for laws and regulations that meet their needs.

How much? It depends. Toyota Motor Corp., for example, spent $1.29 million in the second quarter of 2011 lobbying on tax incentives for patent laws, alternative energy vehicles, fuel cells and other issues, according to a report filed on July 20 with the House clerk's office, and which was obtained by the media.

2012 Porsche 911: First Official Photos of the 991 Hit the Web

Posted: 17 Aug 2011 04:35 PM PDT

It was bound to happen; the very first official press photos of the new 2012 Porsche 911 were leaked onto the internet today well ahead of the sports coupe's world premiere at the Frankfurt Motor Show in mid-September.

If you're having a hard time spotting the styling changes we won't blame you as the 991 was closely modeled after the outgoing 997.

And while there may be more differences than we care to mention, the most eye-catching alterations concern the concave front LED daytime running lamps, the door-mounted exterior mirrors and the much thinner and more futuristic looking LED tail lamps that adorn the more heavily sculpted rear end.

Rather than simply chopping off the rood and strengthening the front windshield frame, Audi's designers opted for a low, continuous window area while the Spyder also gains a pair of doors that open upwards diagonally.

US Government Pays $11 Million to Ford for Historic Rouge Complex Cleanup

Posted: 17 Aug 2011 08:48 AM PDT

The United States government agreed on Friday to pay Ford Motor Co. $10.84 million in order to settle a 7-year-old lawsuit over the cleanup of the automaker's Rouge Complex near Detroit during both World Wars.

The 2,000-acre estate was bought in 1915 by Henry Ford where, among other models, he manufactured the iconic Model T. The National Park Service has since named it "the world's most famous auto plant". During World War I, the US government used it to build naval ships, an activity that was joined by the manufacturing of aircraft engines in World War II. In peacetime, Ford used it for auto and steel production.

Kawasaki ZX-770R Concept: The Japanese Antidote to the KTM X-BOW

Posted: 17 Aug 2011 08:22 AM PDT

If KTM could pull it off with the X-BOW, then why couldn't any other motorcycle maker take the leap and venture into the automotive business with a special lightweight sports car? Though it is a simple question, (obviously) the answer is far more complex than it seems at a first glance.

But in the fantasy land of designers, there are no restrictions or limits, only a desire to create. And for Dutch designer Sabino Leerentveld, who we came to know through his Aston Martin V12 and BMW Nazca Homage prototypes, the answer to the previous question is the Kawasaki ZX-770R Concept.
