Porsche 911: A Timeline of the World's Most Famous Sports Car

Posted: 24 Aug 2011 06:12 PM PDT

If there were ever a more appropriate title for Porsche's almost five decades old evolution of the 911, it would be "Against all Odds". The reason being that the iconic model introduced in 1964 by Ferdinand Porsche, has proven to be a runaway success despite its shortcomings.

But let's take it from the beginning. First of all, it was Porsche's second model after the 356 and it was unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1963. Its original designation was the 901. However, Peugeot had registered all three-digit numbers with a "0" in the middle for its lineup, and Porsche was forced to change the name to 911.

More importantly, it was the layout that should have condemned the 911: physics dictate that the right place to put an engine in a car is either up front or in the middle. However, the 911 had its flat-six placed behind the rear axle.

Posted: 24 Aug 2011 03:35 PM PDT

Land Rover's timeless Defender is a rugged, durable and extremely capable off roader, and as such, it falls behind when it comes to luxury. But where there's a will (and plenty of cash to go around…) there's a way.

Vilner, which is a Bulgarian design studio, said it was approached by a "Russian oligarch" (a.k.a. a business magnate) who wanted to turn the wick up on a short- and long-wheelbase Land Rover Defender by customizing their interiors.

Report: McLaren Preparing New Models Including an MP4-12C Cabrio and a Lamborghini Aventador Rival

Posted: 24 Aug 2011 01:14 PM PDT

When the launch of your first and your second road models are separated by close to two decades (19 years to be exact), then you hardly qualify as a car manufacturer.

That is the case with McLaren: production of the extraordinary F1 begun in 1992 and stopped almost 100 cars later in 1998. Deliveries of its second production model, the MP4-12C, have just begun. Therefore, McLaren may be a big name in Formula 1, but it lacks Ferrari's cache and experience in production models.

Video: You Know You're a Cheapskate When…

Posted: 24 Aug 2011 09:39 AM PDT

It's not a matter if you can, or depending on the local laws, if you're allowed to tie up a mattress pad on the roof of your car, but there's something fundamentally wrong when you do it to a Porsche 911 Turbo - even if it's an older generation model (996 in this case).

You can watch the video for yourself after the break, just make sure to mute the sound if you're at work as the person filming the 911 Turbo makes some (unnecessary) foul comments.
