Vancouver Riots Victim will Continue to Pay for her Burned Down BMW M5!

Posted: 19 Aug 2011 05:13 PM PDT

We suspect that you remember our story about the young woman trying to save her E60 BMW M5 from the manic hooligans during the Vancouver riots that erupted in June after the Canucks lost to the Boston Bruins for the Stanley Cup.

As seen on several videos, the young woman, who was later identified as Jazmin Perez, tried in vain to save her BMW M5 from being destroyed. Perez had parked her car outside a store in downtown Vancouver, and when she returned, she found the mob burning down her V10-powered bimmer "to silver metal" as she told CBC News.

It won't be long before we get our first glimpse of the production version of Volkswagen's all-new Up! city car that scheduled to have its official world premiere at next month's Frankfurt Motor Show.

But here's a little something we learned. While the three-door hatchback model's looks are very similar to the original Up! Concept car displayed at the 2007 Frankfurt auto show, under the sheetmetal it's a different story as Volkswagen has ditched the study's unique rear-engine, rear-wheel drive layout.

Posted: 19 Aug 2011 03:29 PM PDT

The Ardennes Forest in Belgium is famous not just for the failed German offensive against the Allied forces, which signaled the beginning of the end for World War II and the fall of the Third Reich, but also for its Spa-Francorchamps circuit that is a place closely linked with Formula 1.

Spa includes one of the championship's most demanding corners, the flat-out Eau Rouge. With the F1 teams heading to Ardennes for the Belgium GP on August 26, Mazda has released a video with its race driver Mike Ticehurst guiding us through a lap behind the wheel of a 275HP MX-5 GT.

You can watch it right after the jump.

NCE Converts New Jaguar XJ into a Four-Door Convertible Oddity

Posted: 19 Aug 2011 03:01 PM PDT

One of the latest models to fall into the hands of California-based company Newport Convertible Engineering (NCE) is the new Jaguar XJ.

NCE is known for chopping off the roofs of just about anything it can, be that a Toyota Prius hybrid or a luxury Range Rover SUV.

And while we respect the work that went into developing and applying the convertible treatment to Jaguar's flagship limousine, the end result is not what we would call elegant or stylish, especially with the soft top in normal position. Check out the rest of the pictures for yourself in our gallery after the break.

Driver Tries to Stop Runaway Pickup Truck Fred Flintstone-Style

Posted: 19 Aug 2011 02:04 PM PDT

A driver using his feet to stop a vehicle is something you expect to see in the Flintstones movie or a comic strip and not in real life, yet this actually happened when a 24-year-old Detroit-area man literally used his feet to try to bring his runaway truck with faulty brakes to a halt.

The comical scene was captured on police video by a patrol car that had been called in to help. According to the Detroit police, the man was aware of the problem as he had previously stopped to check his pickup but instead of calling for a tow truck, he continued on his way.

Nearly eight decades after Edsel Ford, the son of the founder of the company, commissioned the one-off 1934 Model 40 Speedster, the historical sports car made a comeback at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance show in Monterey, California.

The custom made model, which served Edsel Ford as a personal roadster had changed many hands after his death in 1943 until its last owner, a Texas car collector, bought the car in 2008. After the collector's sudden death in 2010, the Speedster returned to Edsel's home, now operated as an historic site called the Edsel & Eleanor Ford House.

Why Overtaking Returned in Formula 1 This Season

Posted: 19 Aug 2011 08:48 AM PDT

In recent years, Formula 1 had turned boring. Each F1 race became a tedious process with almost no overtaking and pit strategies were more important than the actual driving on the racetrack.

This year, however, things have changed dramatically. We are finally watching true racing: wheel-to-wheel battles, rapid changes in the classification, unexpected results and, most of all, overtaking – and plenty of it. And this despite the fact that Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull Racing are even more dominant than Schumi and the Scuderia at their best.

New Cadillac Ciel 4-door Convertible Concept Wows Pebble Beach Crowd [Photos + Video]

Posted: 19 Aug 2011 04:58 AM PDT

GM's Cadillac division is on a roll lately. After confirming the production of three new cars including the XTS large luxury saloon, the BMW 3-Series rivaling ATS compact sports sedan, and the ELR Coupe plug-in hybrid EV, Cadillac revealed an impressive new concept model called Ciel that looks into the future but winks at the past.

Named after the French word for sky, the Ciel is a large (5.174 mm or 203.7-in. in length) four-seat, four-door convertible with "suicide" rear doors and no B-pillar reminiscent of the 1961 Lincoln Continental convertible.

"Large, expressive luxury is innate to Cadillac and the Ciel recalls that heritage, while suggesting where the brand can go in the future," said Clay Dean, global design director for Cadillac. "Authentic luxury is driven by experiences, not just products, and Ciel is about the experience of the journey."
