Thai Floods Could Spell Delays in Toyota and Honda Production well into 2012

Posted: 07 Nov 2011 03:59 PM PST

In 2011, only the Saab saga has surpassed that of the Japanese car manufacturers' problems. Just when they were on their way to recuperate from the disruption caused by the March earthquake in Japan, the recent floods in Thailand have curtailed their plans - probably for much longer than originally anticipated.

IHS Automotive analyst Tracy Handler said: "Both Toyota and Honda won't be able to expand production as planned until the first quarter of 2012. They've been really unlucky this year."

Volvo Offers Factory-Backed Polestar Performance Kits in the USA

You know that the world is changing when a carmaker like Volvo, once the staple of doctors and soccer moms, which cherished the brand's safe and square (in both meanings of the word) station wagon models, starts engaging in "factory-authorized" tuning for some of its models.

Volvo North America announced that its Sweden-based, long-time tuning partner Polestar, maker of the one-off 405HP AWD C30 and 330HP S60 performance concepts, has developed software upgrades for the 2008MY and later C30, C70 and S40 models equipped with the five-cylinder turbocharged gasoline T5 engine.

Posted: 07 Nov 2011 02:25 PM PST

Why would anyone destroy his or her vehicle –no matter the condition it is in- for a few minutes of craziness? Well, for hooning advocates, the answer to that question is purely for fun, the rest will probably be left scratching their heads.

If you haven't done so already, you can watch a late 1970s – early 1980s Dodge Ramcharger doing an extreme burnout in the video after the break.

GM Won’t Hand Over Technology or 9-4X Crossover to Saab’s Chinese Owners

Posted: 07 Nov 2011 01:40 PM PST

Last Friday, GM spokesman Jim Cain said that the company would "not be able to support a change in the ownership of Saab which could negatively impact GM's existing relationships in China or otherwise adversely affect GM's interests worldwide."

Today, General Motors has finally stopped beating around the bush and decided to come out in the open about the Saab-Pang Da-Youngman deal. And what the Detroit-based automaker said is that it's not giving away its Epsilon platform technology nor its 9-4X SUV.

"Although General Motors is open to the continued supply of powertrains and other components to Saab under appropriate terms and conditions, GM will not agree to the continuation of the existing technology licenses or the continued supply of 9-4X vehicles to Saab following the proposed change in ownership, as it would not be in the best interest of GM shareholders," Cain said in a statement.

Getting up close and personal with a Lamborghini Gallardo is quite an experience. Especially if said car is the lightweight Superleggera and the venue is the famous Monza circuit in Italy.

Now, everyone would give his or her right arm to get in the driver's seat and push the pedal to the metal. YouTube member Marchettino, however, was perfectly happy to occupy the passenger seat when the Superleggera was being driven around the track.

Toyota Plans to Sell a €100,000 Fuel Cell Car in Europe by 2015

[2007 Toyota Hybrid X Concept pictured above]

There's no doubt that Toyota, with its Prius, is the carmaker that made hybrid cars an everyday word in our vocabulary. Granted, other companies like Honda with its first, odd-looking Insight, offered their own models, but it was the best-selling Prius that made hybrid cars popular to the masses.

As emission regulations become tougher though, even Toyota is looking for ways to offer even "greener" cars. All-electric vehicles like the Nissan Leaf are one option. But Toyota wants to go the extra mile and launch a new fuel cell model in Europe by 2015.

Posted: 07 Nov 2011 08:55 AM PST

After the first real picture and computer-generated images of the conceptual BRZ sports coupe that will receive its world premiere at the Los Angeles Auto Show next week, Subaru today gave us a sneak peak of the actual production model that will debut at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show on November 30.

We only get a look at the 2012 BRZ's front end, but it is enough to spot some minor differences from the near-production study such as the reshaped bumper that drops the lip spoiler and gains more conventional grille bars and a pair of round fog lights under the turning signals, which are located in less prominent air vents.

Rumors: Lamborghini to Launch RWD Gallardo Spyder LP 550-2 at the LA Show?

[Lamborghini Gallardo LP 570-4 Spyder Performante pictured above]

When Lamborghini unveiled the Super Trofeo Stradale at the 64th IAA in Frankfurt, we thought that this limited production version (only 150 pieces) would be the Italian company's farewell to its smallest supercar before its replacement arrives sometime next year.

But if a report from Teamspeed proves accurate, the Italian supercar manufacturer may have one more special edition of the Gallardo up its sleeve. This time, it's a rear-wheel drive version of the open-top Gallardo Spyder named the LP550-2

2013 Nissan GT-R Honed from Within, Gains 550HP and Upgraded Chassis [78 Photos]

Posted: 07 Nov 2011 07:00 AM PST

Like clockwork, ever since the presentation of the GT-R in late 2007, Nissan introduces a new model year version of its highly praised all-wheel drive sports car towards the end of fall or the beginning of winter.

This year's version carries the 2012MY designation in Japan and Europe, and the 2013MY moniker for the North American market.

If you're looking to find any styling differences from last year's model, don't waste your time as the only visible change concerns the addition of blue lighting inside the tachometer ring to match the shift position indicator light.

Underneath the skin, however, it's a different story as Nissan's engineers have honed the new GT-R in every possible way. Starting with the 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine, a raft of upgrades that include but are not limited to, revised heads, intercooler and exhaust system, push output from 530PS at 6,400rpm and 612Nm (451 lb-ft) from 3,200 to 6,400 rpm, to 550PS at 6,400rpm and 632Nm (466 lb-ft) from 3,200 to 5,800 rpm.

The 2011 Formula 1 season may have been a very exciting one as far as the racing was concerned, thanks to the new rules that resulted in lots of overtaking and wheel-to-wheel battles between drivers, but in one aspect, it has also been confusing.

Outside the tracks there was a bitter legal battle between two teams over the right to use the Lotus name since the end of last season.

Subaru to Debut New Advanced Tourer Hybrid Concept at Tokyo Show

Posted: 07 Nov 2011 05:14 AM PST

The 2011 edition of the biennial Tokyo Motor Show that opens its doors to the press on November 30 will play host to the world premiere of a new Subaru hybrid concept model named the Advanced Tourer.

The new study appears to be related to Subaru's gullwing-door Hybrid Tourer Concept that was displayed at the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show, only this time, the Japanese automaker opted for a more practical five-door station wagon.

The Advanced Tourer's exterior dimensions at 4,580mm (180.3-in.) long, 1,840mm (72.4-in.) wide and 1,430mm (56.3-in.) tall, put it between the Impreza (4,415mm long) and the Legacy (4,775mm), meaning that Subaru may be previewing a proposal for a standalone hybrid model.
