Ferrari Designer Called Upon by Fiat to Create a Common Styling for Chrysler and Lancia

Posted: 22 Nov 2011 06:52 PM PST

Platform sharing is nothing new in the automotive world. Everyone does it as it enables companies to reduce development costs across the board. For example, if it weren't for the VW Touareg, Porsche probably wouldn't have the means to develop the model that effectively made it a cash cow: the Cayenne.

And truth to be said, most of the times, your average buyer doesn't know what's hiding under the sheetmetal nor if the vehicle in question is identical in many ways to a model bearing a different badge, because what he or she sees and feels are indeed different.

The trouble starts when carmakers engage in blatant badge engineering, simply placing a different grille and a new logo on the steering wheel and calling it something else.

And that's where the problem lies for Fiat and Chrysler. The automotive alliance recently revealed a trio of Lancia models in Europe: the Thema sedan, Flavia Cabrio and the Voyager MPV, which are nothing more than rebadged versions of the Chrysler 300, 200 Convertible and Town & Country respectively.

The new 2012 Focus ST hasn't even hit the road yet, but Ford's first global performance model has already secured a position as the star car of the upcoming British blockbuster film, The Sweeney, which is based on the original TV series that aired in the UK between 1975 and 1978.

Ford was strongly connected to the 1970s Sweeney TV series as the stars of the police drama used Ford Granadas, Consuls and Cortinas to tackle violent crime in London.

Consumer Reports Questions if VW's Press Cars are the Same as the Ones Found in Dealerships

Posted: 22 Nov 2011 05:00 PM PST

Credibility is like virginity: once you lose it, you never get it back. Therefore, motoring journalists try to be as objective as possible (well, most of them, anyway) and report all their findings, good or bad alike when they take a car for a test drive.

However, Consumer Reports [CR], asks a rather intriguing question concerning this issue: are the press cars driven by motoring journalists the same as the ones bought by the public?

It's true that, despite quality control, two cars of the exact same make, model and specification that roll out of the same plant may differ in certain aspects such as fit and finish or actual engine output by a few ponies, but those differences are most of the times imperceptible to the human eye.

Earlier this summer, Volkswagen gave Consumer Reports a 2012 Passat from its press fleet for a first drive. CR's Jon Linkov noticed at the time that, unlike the Jetta, the U.S.-built 2012 Passat sedan's trunk hinges were dressed up in plastic.

Posted: 22 Nov 2011 04:00 PM PST

While Ferrari is doing its best to alienate not only the brand's fans, but even its customers as well, another automaker, Lexus, did something that is extremely rare when it comes to limited-run specialty models like the LFA supercar.

And what may that be, we hear you ask? The Japanese company's British division organized a competition on its official Facebook page giving three people the opportunity to drive around the famous Silverstone track in the LFA.

The lucky winners were Jon Eliel, a freelance events director, Oliver Storry, a commercial pilot, and Tim Andrew, a professional photographer. The LFA driving event took place at Silverstone on November 2.

Watch the film from the track-packed day in the video after the break, while if you scroll further down, you'll find a comprehensive gallery that includes some pretty cool pictures.

Video: NASCAR’s Tony Stewart and F1’s Lewis Hamilton Swap Seats

Posted: 22 Nov 2011 03:25 PM PST

Formula 1 is considered the top form of motorsports thanks to its cutting-edge technology and worldwide appeal. Well, almost worldwide: despite Bernie Ecclestone's efforts, F1 hasn't really caught up in the U.S.

NASCAR, on the other hand, despite being much more low-tech, is the series to watch in the Land of the Free and the Home of the Michelle Obama booing Brave. But it remains solely an American thing.

Posted: 22 Nov 2011 12:35 PM PST

Being that's only a matter of weeks before the new CR-V arrives in Honda's showrooms across the United States, it doesn't come to much of a surprise that the media has already had some time behind the wheel of the Japanese maker's crossover model.

Today, we found two first test drive videos of the 2012 Honda CR-V from Motor Trend magazine and Consumer Reports, both of which, more or less state the same: that the crossover model has been refined in an evolutionary manner building on the qualities of its predecessor.

“See it Through” with “Mannish Boy” in an “Imported from Detroit” Chrysler 300

We'll admit that the title may seem like yours truly forgot to take his meds today – but for better or for worse, that's not the case. You see, all three quotes come from Chrysler's new 60-second ad that will air on Thanksgiving Day during the Lions-Packers football game.

"See it Through" is a 1917 poem by Michigan poet laureate, Edgar A. Guest. The carmaker says that it's appropriate since it exemplifies the comeback of Detroit and Chrysler.

What will they Come up with Next? Chinese Motorcycle Rain…Tent [Video]

Posted: 22 Nov 2011 10:33 AM PST

Unlike other motor vehicle operators, motorcyclists are exposed to the elements of nature, be that wind, rain, snow or temperature extremes.

Of course, when the weather gets rough and tough, the smart thing to do is just find another mode of transportation, but sometimes that's not an option for all people.

Fortunately, at least when it comes to light rain and snow, there's an abundance of waterproof apparel available in the market. And then there's this: one Chinese company has come up with a very bizarre solution that looks a lot more like a tent than motorcycle gear.

It’s Official: Mercedes-Benz Reveals Tech Info and Photos of Brand-New SL Roadster

Posted: 22 Nov 2011 09:29 AM PST

Since 1954, Mercedes-Benz has released five generations of its luxury "Sport Leicht" (that's German for Sport Lightweight) roadster, or as well all know it, the SL-Class. Now the time has come for the introduction of the sixth generation SL – and it's not a moment too soon as the current model has been in the market since 2001 having received two facelifts, one in 2006 and the other in 2008.

Over the past year, we scooped the 2013 SL several times and even published photos of its body-in-white that recently made their way onto the web. But now, the Stuttgart-based carmaker has come out in the open, officially revealing a batch of photos and info on its new roadster that will be unveiled before the end of the year.

Though Mercedes doesn't actually show us the finished product, the company gives us new photos shot during the development phase and more importantly, a detailed insight on some of the new SL's novel features.

For the first time, the new SL is constructed almost entirely (89%) from aluminum, with the exception of high-strength steel integrated in the A-pillars and the (even lighter than aluminum) magnesium in the rear panel.

Porsche Unveils New 911 Cabriolet with Lightweight Roof Structure [with Video]

Posted: 22 Nov 2011 07:30 PM PST

Well, that didn't take long, did it? Only a couple of months after unveiling the all-new 911 Coupe at the Frankfurt Motor Show, Porsche today revealed the Cabriolet version of its most famous model series.

As expected, Porsche opted for a soft top instead of the folding hard top utilized by some of the 911's rivals. However, the new hood does not use the multi-layered fabric structure of the previous 997 model but composite materials that are supported by a new magnesium frame, which is said to reduce its weight.

In addition, Porsche claims that the design allows the typical 911 roof line to be "retained in its entirety" on the Cabriolet model.

Under its aluminum-steel skin, the new 911 Cabriolet is identical to its fixed-roof sibling. It rides on a new platform with a longer wheelbase with power coming from the same flat-six engines in 350HP, 3.4-liter and 400HP, 3.8-liter flavors for the Carrera and Carrera S respectively, and a choice of manual or dual-clutch PDK transmissions, both with seven speeds.

Buy Five Ferraris, Join the Exclusive Prancing Horse Club

Posted: 22 Nov 2011 05:58 AM PST

It seems like some Ferrari owners are more equal than the others. At least that's what the company's chairman, Luca di Montezemolo, implied when he told Autonews Europe about Ferrari's plans to create a collectors' club with the purpose of giving loyal customers some extra privileges.

Di Montezemolo conceived this idea after the roadster version of the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano, the SA Aperta, which had a limited production run of only 80 cars, caused friction between Ferrari and some of its customers.
