It's a Detroit Thing: Chrysler 300S 426 HEMI V8 Concept Growls at the LA Auto Show [Video]

Posted: 18 Nov 2011 07:33 PM PST

Once a staple motto of the American muscle car industry, the "there is no replacement for displacement" school of thought has become somewhat obsolete in today's high-tech world.

Of course this does not mean in any way that we don't appreciate some raw American V8 power, and there's a lot that going on with the conceptual Chrysler 300S 426 that is on display at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show.

The concept is a joint project between Chrysler and its Mopar brand, which basically dropped a 426 cubic-inch [equal to 70-liters] Hemi V8 crate engine under the hood of a Chrysler 300S.

The company didn't release any performance figures, but our guess is that it's either the all-aluminum 426 Generation III Hemi V8 that is rated at 540 horsepower and 530 lb-ft of torque, or the more recent 426 Gen III High Output HEMI V8 with a monstrous 590-horsepower on tap. Either way, that's a whole lot of ponies…

Mission Impossible: Paula Patton Tries to Add Some Beauty to BMW i3 and i8 Concepts at LA Auto Show

Posted: 18 Nov 2011 05:31 PM PST

Unlike the Fiat Group and to a lesser extent, South Korean and French automakers, the BMW Group doesn't find it necessary to use beautiful female or male models to attract the attention of the media and casual visitors alike upon its vehicles during motor shows.

So when American actress Paula Patton juggled her way onto BMW's Los Angeles Motor Show stage for the presentation of the fully-electric i3 hatchback and hybrid-electric i8 coupe concept cars, we were kind of surprised.

If you're not familiar with Ms. Patton, we won't blame you as the 35-year old actress hasn't really won any breakthrough roles. However, she will star alongside Tom Cruise in the next Mission Impossible film titled "Ghost Protocol" to be released December 21.

And as you probably already know, BMW's gasoline-electric hybrid i8 Concept will be featured in the movie.

In Post-Soviet Russia, Moskvitch Sedans Look Like This [Video]

Posted: 18 Nov 2011 04:29 PM PST

Our automotive trip around the world today brings us to Mother Russia and this very odd-looking creation. To be honest, we had no idea what it was until we saw the credits at the end of the video clip.

As it turns out, this bizarre low rider is a custom coupe based on the Soviet-era Moskvitch 2140, which was a small four-door sedan built from 1976 to 1988. You can see a picture of the original model as well as the video of the chop-top Moskvitch right after the jump.

Jay Leno and Other Volt Owners Drive 10,000 Miles without Using a Drop of Gas

Posted: 18 Nov 2011 04:00 PM PST

Sales of the Volt have been picking up lately with GM's extended-range EV outselling one of its main rivals, the Nissan Leaf, for the very first time in October. Famous car nut Jay Leno, though, is an early adopter and he got his own Volt in December of 2010.

The host of "The Tonight Show" says he has covered more than 10,000 miles without ever visiting a gas station. Yes, you read that correctly: Leno is still driving on the same tank of fuel his Volt had 11 months ago.

The Not so New Faces of Lincoln's Botoxed 2013 MKS and MKT on Film

Posted: 18 Nov 2011 03:39 PM PST

If there's one luxury brand (or better put, one that aspires to be premium) that has failed to deliver anything remotely close to exciting, that would be Lincoln. In recent years, even Lexus and Acura at some point offered products that have managed to capture the attention of luxury car buyers.

And this is something and that is clearly reflected in Lincoln's weak sales numbers. In the first 10 months of the year, Lincoln sold 70,935 cars in the States (+1.2% from the same period in 2010), whereas GM's Cadillac delivered 124,985 vehicles (+5.6%), Buick 151,779 cars (+19.9%) and Lexus 153,739 units (-16.2%).

Aside from the MKZ sedan (+31.7%) and the MKX crossover (+5.3%), Lincoln's other models saw their numbers plummet this year, including the MKS sedan with 9,824 deliveries from January through October (-18.9%) and the MKT crossover with 4,126 sales in the same period (-33.5% from last year).

Structural Photos and New Details of 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL hit the Web

Posted: 18 Nov 2011 03:16 PM PST

We have been following the development of the new 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL for quite some time now having recently spied a prototype with minimal camouflage that enabled us to see many aspects of the hardtop roadster's design.

Naturally, as we're nearing closer to its debut that will take place at next year's Detroit Auto Show in January, more information is coming out. Earlier this week, German magazine Auto Motor und Sport published a set of what appear to be official pictures of the next SL's body-in-white, along with some very interesting details.

The images suggest that the all-new luxury roadster will retain the familiar SL silhouette while adopting styling cues from other Mercedes models such as the boxy nose that is becoming the brand's new "face" and the SLK's "Magic Sky Control" retractable rigid roof.

Johnny Walker's Very, Very Long Promotional Audi Q7 Limousine

Posted: 18 Nov 2011 01:47 PM PST

For some reason unknown to us, the Audi Q7 SUV has become an increasingly popular choice amongst stretch-limousine builders and promoters alike – especially after the demise of General Motors' Hummer brand.

You can find insanely stretched Q7s anywhere from the glamorous and glitzy Las Vegas Strip to the peaceful and scenic Greek coastal town of Nafpaktos, where these pictures were shot by Carscoop reader Christos P.

C&D Nabs Official 2014 Volvo XC90 Design Proposals

Posted: 18 Nov 2011 12:54 PM PST

By Volvo's own admission, the XC90 was a "latecomer" in the luxury SUV market as it was launched in 2002 – some five years after the Mercedes-Benz M-Class and three years later than the BMW X5.

Nevertheless, Volvo claims that the XC90 has become "Sweden's most valuable export product", selling a record 85,000 units in 2005 and bringing in about US$6.2 billion to the company in its peak years. The U.S. has been the XC90's number one market with 38,800 units sold in 2004 and 36,200 in 2005.

Unhappily Ever After: Suzuki Says VW Deal is Terminated, Wolfsburg Doesn’t Think So…

Posted: 18 Nov 2011 11:43 AM PST

Suzuki announced today that the cooperation agreement with VW has been terminated and threatened to take the case to an international court for arbitration if the German company continues to hold on to its 19.9% stake.

"In the absence of VW's cooperation and given its failure to do what was agreed, there is no basis for the partnership to continue," Osamu Suzuki, CEO of the Hamamatsu-based carmaker said today. "We will now work to restore the relationship between Suzuki and VW to its original state as independent parties who do not restrict each other."

Are they for Real? Carry-On Folding Boat to Tackle Thai Floods…[Video]

Posted: 18 Nov 2011 10:43 AM PST

As the old adage goes, necessity is the mother of all inventions. For almost half a year now, Thailand's residents have been experiencing some of the worst floods ever recorded in the country in the last 50 years.

But while there has been widespread human suffering, loss of life and damage to products and properties, the natural disaster has also offered plenty of opportunity for business inventiveness – from motorcycle and automobile snorkels to makeshift ladders and fashionable water boots.

However, none of the above comes close to what you're about to watch in the commercial below. In fact, the idea is so absurd that we're thinking it may be some kind of video prank – albeit a very well executed one, if that's the case.

The advert says the Ready Boat is a foldable, lightweight carry-on vessel with a single row included and which can transfer up to two people with a combined weight of up to 150kg or 330 pounds.

Premiere for BMW and BMW M Performance at the 2011 Essen Motor Show

Posted: 18 Nov 2011 10:05 AM PST

November is shaping up to be by far the most intense motor show month of the year as we've already had two major events, the 2011 SEMA Show and this week's 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show, with two more heading our way, the 2011 Essen Motor Show and the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show.

The Essen Motor Show, which is the European equivalent of SEMA and takes place in Germany from November 26 to December 4, is up next. Today, BMW announced that its BMW Performance and BMW M Performance divisions will officially participate in the tuning show for the very first time (for those of you counting, we used the word "Show" 8 times, and the word "BMW" three times…in the same sentence).

Austin, Texas F1 Track Given One Week Deadline to Solve its Problems

Posted: 18 Nov 2011 09:11 AM PST

Despite all the publicity surrounding the return of Formula 1 in the U.S. next year, it looks increasingly unlikely that the event will take place in the brand-new Circuit of Americas track located in Austin, Texas.

Bernie Ecclestone, longstanding F1 chief executive, has issued an ultimatum to the race organizers, announcing that they must get their act together and solve their problems before the next meeting of the World Motor Sport Council on December 7, which will ratify the 2012 F1 calendar.

Fiat 500 Abarth Hottie is Not Italian, but Who Cares? And Oh, There’s a New J.Lo Spot Out

Posted: 18 Nov 2011 08:36 AM PST

Not that we mind one bit, but remember the scorching hot brunette starring in Fiat's 500 Abarth commercial? Whom are we kidding, of course you do.

Well as one of our commentators, Vlad Ewan, pointed out, even though Fiat's ad would like us to believe that she is Italian, the bodacious, long-legged model is in fact Romanian and her name for those of you familiar with "Google Image Search" is Catrinel Menghia.

But then again, isn't that the case with the Fiat 500 in the sense that it's not built in Italy but in Tychy, Poland and Toluca, Mexico?

And since we're on the topic of Fiat 500 ads, the Italian company just released nother commercial with Jeniffer Lopez, this time for the limited production 500 by Gucci Edition, which you can watch with or without your palm facing your head in the video after the jump.

Porsche Panamera Turbo gets a Hamann-Style Makeover

Posted: 18 Nov 2011 08:25 AM PST

If you ain't satisfied from Porsche's standard Panamera offerings nor its comprehensive customization program, the tuning specialists at Hamann have put their BMW tunes on the side to work on Stuttgart's sports saloon.

The result is named the Cyrano and it includes both styling and a selection of performance upgrades.

Starting with the exterior, Hamann developed a new wide-body aero package that transforms the looks (for the better or for the worse, we'll let you be the judge of that) of the Panamera

Dodge Boss Says Next Viper will Appeal to a "Broader Segment of the Market"

Posted: 18 Nov 2011 07:09 AM PST

The next generation of America's second most famous thoroughbred sports car after the Corvette, the Dodge Viper SRT10, is entering its final phase of development as we approach its market launch that's slated to occur sometime in 2012.

In the past year or so, Dodge officials have been letting out bits and pieces of the puzzle that give us some idea of the direction that the company plans to follow with the first new model to be development under the ownership of the Fiat Group.

On the sidelines of this week's 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show, Rick Kranz from Automotive News had the opportunity to talk to Dodge boss Reid Bigland about the new Viper SRT10.

Bigland told Kranz that the redesigned model "will appeal to a broader segment of the market" and that we should expect it next year but most likely not at the 2012 Detroit motor show.

CLP Automotive's BMW X6 Bruiser is All Show but No Go

Posted: 18 Nov 2011 06:39 AM PST

We would hardly call BMW's X6 crossover a looker, which could explain the abundance of styling packages available from independent tuners. However, something tells us that CLP Automotive's newest offering called "Bruiser", will not help change the notion that the X6 is well, a dud when it comes to looks.

The Bruiser package is all show and no go as it is limited to a wide aero kit and new wheels.

How do you replace a racing car that has scored 115 wins and 12 international and national titles in just three years? The answer is simple: you don't. You carefully update it so that it continues to be on top of its class.

This is the challenge undertaken by the engineers of Audi's quattro GmbH who had to develop an even more competitive version of the successful R8 LMS named Ultra.
