Toyota CEO Says to Company Must Build Cars that "Make People Happy"

Posted: 08 Nov 2011 04:23 PM PST

Earlier this year, young people offered a job at Toyota were invited to the Japanese company's test track. As they waited to be introduced to the firm's race drivers, a lone Lexus LFA drove around the track, mesmerizing them with the howling screams of its V10 engine.

No one knew who the man behind the wheel was. Only after he stepped out and formally introduced himself did they learn that it was the company's CEO, Akio Toyoda. "I asked them if they like cars", said Toyoda. "If they didn't, they shouldn't bother joining."

When he assumed his duties in June 2009, the 55-year old grandson of Toyota's founder said that he wanted his company to build cars that "made people happy".

He did not know it at the time, but it was a rather unfortunate choice of words. Less than six months later, Toyota, which up to this point had built a reputation as a manufacturer of reliable cars, had to face the unintended acceleration safety issues in the U.S. that sprouted massive and costly recalls.

Tokyo Show Preview: Suzuki's Toy-Like Q-Concept Electric Mini Car

Posted: 08 Nov 2011 01:08 PM PST

For those of you that found the Suzuki Regina that we showed earlier today, a bit too down to earth for a Tokyo Motor Show concept, the Japanese automaker has another study up its sleeve. Of course, there's the argument that the Q-Concept looks more like a toy than a real car, but that's another story.

Suzuki's second concept for this year's edition of the Tokyo motorshow is a tiny city car that measures just 2,500mm long, 1,300mm wide and 1,650mm tall.

Posted: 08 Nov 2011 11:45 AM PST

Yesterday, we showed you a video of a racecar driver that lost control of a Porsche 911 during a rally and just narrowly missed crashing into the spectators on the side of the road.

Now, we've got two more close calls captured on film, one involving a speeding motorcyclist and a car that was entering the freeway (see how close they got to each other in the opening picture above), and the other a pedestrian crossing the road and a very careless driver. In each case, blink and you'll miss it...

Hop over the jump to watch both video clips.

After a short break in 2009, the Japanese carmaker is returning to the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show with the third iteration of the PIVO concept, which follows the PIVO 1 from 2005 and the PIVO 2 from 2007.

While the PIVO 3 keeps the three-seat layout with a central driving position as well as the all-wheel steering system of its predecessors, it's styling has evolved and moved closer to production.

Francois Bancon, Nissan deputy divisional GM for product strategy, says that while the company has not yet made any final decision to produce the PIVO, it is considering it:
